  • Discover Music Project: Episode 47

    29/06/2012 Duration: 01h25min

Karl is back to help Jonny with a request episode, as we explore The Clash per the wishes of a listener named Reagan. This British band  from the laste 70s and early 80s is best known for anthemic punk songs like "London Calling" and "Should I Stay or Should I Go" but, as you'll hear, they explored many kinds of music and featured a sophisticated level of production and musicianship rarely heard among punk bands. The songs below are impressively (or contentiously) diverse and extremely interesting throughout. 1. White Riot (The Clash) 2. White Man in Hammersmith Palais (The Clash) 3. Career Opportunities (The Clash) 4. Complete Control (The Clash) 5. Safe European Home (Give 'Em Enough Rope) 6. Rudie Can't Fail (London Calling) 7. Lost in the Supermarket (London Calling) 8. Death or Glory (London Calling) 9. The Card Cheat (London Calling) 10. The Magnificent Seven (Sandinista!) 11. Rebel Waltz (Sandinista!) 12. Kingston Advice (Sandinista!) Encore: Johnny Cash & Joe Strummer - "Redemption Song" (Uneart

  • Frozen North Dinnercast 09: Oh, the Humanity!

    17/06/2012 Duration: 56min

Have you heard of the game Cards Against Humanity? If I may be so bold, it is The Greatest Thing Ever. To prove that, we've put together a full complement of horrible people to test it, and we're broadcasting the result to you good listeners. This is Apples to Apples, but really fucked up. Some of Zach's Connectivity co-hosts tested this baby out at E3, and by the end of it, we'd gotten quite an ab workout from laughing so hard. Hope you enjoy it, and write in to tell us if you did. We may post a second round if ya'll enjoyed yourselves. Remember to rate and review us on iTunes under the Crosstawk ("with a W") banner. Send us a message at crosstawk@gmail.com or just use the comments on the website (crosstawk.com). And check out Cards Against Humanity. With a group of like-minded people, you can't have more fun. It's been scientifically proven.

  • Discover Music Project: Episode 46

    15/06/2012 Duration: 01h12min

Karl returns to DMP and greatly expands Jonny's knowledge of Gorillaz, the "virtual band" created by singer Damon Albarn and comic artist Jamie Hewlett, along with a rotating cast of superstar producers and guest contributors. The group is loosely built around hip-hop and club music, but those are hardly strict boundaries, as you'll hear in Karl's selections: 1. Clint Eastwood [Gorillaz] 2. Sound Check (Gravity) [Gorillaz] 3. Latin Simone (Que Pasa Contigo) [Gorillaz] 4. 19-2000 (Soulchild Remix) [Gorillaz] 5. Feel Good Inc. [Demon Days] 6. November Has Come [Demon Days] 7. Dirty Harry [Demon Days] 8. Don't Get Lost in Heaven [Demon Days] 9. Welcome to the World of the Plastic Beach (Plastic Beach) 10. Plastic Beach [Plastic Beach] 11. On Melancholy Hill [Plastic Beach] Encore: Deltron 3030 - "Time Keeps on Slipping" [Deltron 3030] We hope you enjoyed this episode! Please send your feedback to crosstawk@gmail.com and follow us on Twitter via @jonnymetts and @crosstawk. Reviews and ratings on iTunes are also

  • Box Office Poison: Episode 32

    13/06/2012 Duration: 01h06min

Hey, folks! Just as promised, we've got a new episode of Box Office Poison here for you. Now, unfortunately, there were some technical issues, and as a result, Jon Rind's track's going to sound unusual. We could've held the episode back because of this, but I feel like there's enough great content to justify releasing Episode 32 into the wild. Our apologies for the inconvenience. There's still plenty of great content, though. We discuss God Bless America, The Avengers, Chronicle and then, in our second segment, we discuss our Movie of the Month: Brazil. Did we all enjoy the 1984-inspired romp? You'll have to listen in to find out! And let us know what you thought via email (crosstawk@gmail.com), Twitter (@crosstawk, @JonathanRind, @jonnymetts, @Stan_I_Am and @StrikerObi) or in the comments section on the site. And be sure to leave us a rating/review on iTunes! We really need those! Thanks, guys! We'll see you next time for a new Discover Music Project.

  • Box Office Poison: Episode 31

    11/06/2012 Duration: 01h21min

And we're back for more BOP! We're finishing up the crazy backlog of episodes, folks, and little by little, we're working back to the present. On this episode, I'm back! Stan, Jon Rind, Mike and I talk about Shame, Billy Jack, Our Idiot Brother and Cabin in the Woods. Then, in the second segment, we go through some Trailer Trash, discussing Looper, Brave, Mansome and To Rome with Love. Let us know what you think by hitting us up via email (crosstawk@gmail.com), Twitter (@crosstawk, @Stan_I_Am, @JonathanRind, @StrikerObi and @jonnymetts) and in the comments section on the site. • Rough Draught: The Dirty Deerfield Diaries

    03/06/2012 Duration: 01h56min

After far too long of an absence, I'm very happy to present a brand new episode of Rough Draught: The Beer Appreciation Show! Ultimately, we knew that we'd never be able to produce RD with any regularity since Jon, Mike and I all live so spread out, so basically the promise is this: when at least two of us are in the same city, we'll record a one-off episode. So enjoy the first: The Dirty Deerfield Diaries. On this episode, Jon and I are joined by our good buddy Casper and Jon's girlfriend Katie. And as you'll hear pretty much right away, we made some, er, INTERESTING choices when it comes to the beers, including: Dogfish Head Bitches Brew (9% ABV), Ghost Face Killah (4.5% ABV), Clown Shoes Eagle Claw Fist (8% ABV), The Bruery Saison de Lente (6.5% ABV) and Dogfish Head My Antonia (7.5% ABV). And, as per usual, there are plenty of embarrassing drunk tales to be found within. So enjoy 'em, and once you have, you can let us know what you thought via email (crosstawk@gmail.com), Twitter (@crosstawk) or via the c

  • Discover Music Project: Episode 45

    01/06/2012 Duration: 01h42min

Jonny welcomes Michael "TYP" Cole of Radio Trivia: Podcast Edition to showcase video game music in quite a different way. For this episode of DMP, we focus on the quirky output of electronic composer Hirokazu "Hip" Tanaka, the man behind many familiar Nintendo songs from the 80s and early 90s. Anyone could recognize at least a few of these songs, but we tried to set the context of Tanaka's work for gamers and non-gamers alike. You couldn't ask for a much better expert than Mike, and Jonny knows a little about this stuff as well. Listing every single song would be overkill, but here are the classic games we cover on the show, plus a couple of odd non-game singles at the end. 1. Wild Gunman (NES) 2. Urban Champion (NES) 3. Gyromite (NES) 4. Stack-Up (NES) 5. Balloon Fight (Arcade/NES) 6. Gumshoe (NES) 7. Kid Icarus (NES) 8. Metroid (NES) 9. Mother (NES) 10. Earthbound a.k.a. Mother 2 (SNES) 11. Super Mario Land (GB) 12. Tetris (GB) 13. Game Boy Camera (GB) 14. The Hirokazu Tanaka Song 15. HVC-1384 (Play for Jap

  • Box Office Poison: Episode 30

    31/05/2012 Duration: 01h16min

The shame from how late this episode is blinds the eyes. I'm not even sorry. What can be said that adequately explains just how fucking late this is? Our intrepid guest editor, Stan Ferguson, probably blames himself, but that's not fair. He was only filling in for me. So, to be frank, it's my fault. Direct your assorted vegetables towards Stage 3. This episode, the gang discusses the Movie of the Month: Get Carter. Michael Caine's in it. Not many people know that. Also, you were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off! After all, she was only sixteen. If you don't get these references, you should watch The Trip, available now on Netflix Instant. Send your emails to crosstawk@gmail.com. Send your hate-tweets to @crosstawk, @jonathanrind, @jonnymetts, @StrikerObi and @Stan_I_Am respectively. Then review us on iTunes and give us five stars. Out of spite. Everyone will totally know you're doing it sarcastically. I promise. It's ironic. Hipsters like irony, right? Well, they only like it ironically. Which is me

  • Frozen North Dinnercast: Episode 8. Literally.

    26/05/2012 Duration: 55min

It's been longer than I wanted, but here's your biweekly dose of Frozen North goodness! We talk, this week, over excellent Chinese cuisine. Courney and Nelson learn the ancient art of high-fiving, and the entire group discusses the pros and cons of how you pronounce "literally." Are you pronouncing it in a way that irritates us? Then you should stop. As usual, you can rate us on iTunes (nicely), subscribe to the Crosstawk feed to get this show automatically when it posts, and leave comments on the associated Crosstawk.com blog post or send us an email at crosstawk@gmail.com! Enjoy the show--we literally had a great time recording it.

  • Discover Music Project: Episode 44

    18/05/2012 Duration: 01h16min

It's time for another redux episode, and this time Jonny goes back to the well for more awesome music by Robert Randolph. This superlative pedal steel guitarist has even more depth and variety than we could present back on DMP 12, so here's another hour of uplifting songs that span rock, funk, R&B, gospel, and even a bit of country stomping. 1. I Need More Love (Unclassified) 2. Nobody (Unclassified) 3. Ain't Nothing Wrong With That (Colorblind) 4. Angels (Colorblind) 5. I Still Belong to Jesus (We Walk This Road) 6. Walk Don't Walk (We Walk This Road) 7. Tears of Joy (Live at the Wetlands) 8. Electric Church (Live in Concert) 9. Squeeze > Don't Worry Be Happy > Squeeze (Bonnaroo 2004) Let us know what you thought of this show or want to hear on future episodes -- you can find us on Twitter (@crosstawk and @jonnymetts) or via email: crosstawk@gmail.com. And please rate and review the show on iTunes!

  • The Frozen North Dinnercast; Episode 7

    09/05/2012 Duration: 01h13min

It's episode Lucky Number Sleven of the Frozen North Dinnercast, minus the awesome casting (and stunningly obvious twist). Special Guest Luke Nielson joins us on this episode--you may remember Luke as the latecomer from Episode 2. Many things are discussed, among them M.I.A., prostate cancer, and "baby meltdowns." All this is done in an overarching discussion of Man Rules, which are actually rules for women about men. Although there's one rule in there for women...it's probably a typo. At any rate, sit back and enjoy this episode, then leave a nice comment on the post at www.crosstawk.com or rate us highly on the podcast feed on iTunes.

  • Box Office Poison: Episode 29

    06/05/2012 Duration: 01h40min

We're still playing catch-up with BOP, but you should find this episode enjoyable despite being about a month old. In the first segment, we get into a huge assortment of movie reviews including multiple Edgar Wright films, The Hunger Games, 21 Jump Street, The Sitter, Goon, Super Troopers, Hot Tub Time Machine, and Being Elmo. The back stretch features Trailer Trash, where we look ahead to several movies that thankfully still haven't launched, so going long paid off! The trailers for this edition include Safety Not Guaranteed, Snow White and the Huntsman, God Bless America, and Tim Burton's Dark Shadows: A Tim Burton Film by Tim Burton. Check back very soon for the next BOP, in which we visit our old friend Michael Caine in the Movie of the Month: Get Carter! And if you're one of those special listeners who likes to prepare for this feature, the next pick (Jon's) is Brazil, the cult classic by Terry Gilliam.

  • Discover Music Project: Episode 43

    04/05/2012 Duration: 01h40min

This episode has been about a year and a half in the making. Jonny and Kennda break through DMP's all-male agenda with a young lady truly worthy of being the first female artist we've showcased on the podcast. Regina Spektor's acrobatic voice and ingenious lyrics propel short, infectious pop songs that are often intentionally irritating and yet undeniably beautiful. While Kennda immediately draws comparisons to Tori Amos, your smitten host is content to bask in the weird glory of Regina's creativity and humor. This is one musician who will draw a strong reaction --good or bad-- from every listener. Here are the songs: 1. Hotel Song (Begin To Hope) 2. Field Below (Begin To Hope) 3. Statue of Baby Jesus (Bonnaroo 2007) 4. That Time (Bonnaroo 2007) 5. Folding Chair (Far) 6. Wallet (Far) 7. Carbon Monoxide (Soviet Kitsch) 8. Us (Soviet Kitsch) 9. Apres Moi (Begin To Hope) 10. Another Town (Begin to Hope - Bonus Track) 11. Silly Eye-Color Generalizations (Live in London) 12. Real Love (Instant Karma) Encore: St.

  • Box Office Poison: Episode 28

    25/04/2012 Duration: 01h12min

What's this? A new episode of Box Office Poison? No, it can't be... IT IS! So I'm sure the first question on your mind is, "What the fuck happened?" Well, I (and when I say "I," I mean me, Karl Castaneda) went through the final stages of development and the launch of my very first video game. And as a result, basically everything in my life that wasn't that was pushed to the side, including Crosstawk. So I'm the bad guy. Direct your assorted vegetables in my direction, if you would, please. But the rest of the dudes on this show are fucking rockstars. So don't blame them. In any case, this is the last episode I recorded before my "hiatus," but there are two other episodes in the can, and they'll be seeing a release over the next week. Our recording schedule went on, and even though I won't be on Episodes 29 or 30, the boys held up and delivered the same amazing content you're used to. So let's get to this actual episode. We go over some recent releases (including John Carter) in the first segment, and then we

  • Discover Music Project: Episode 42

    20/04/2012 Duration: 01h38min

This trilogy of DMP shows concludes with Jonny choosing a selection for Kevin, and it's a doozy: the wonderful master of jazz saxophone, John Coltrane. Get ready for a musical revelation as we dive deep into fast bebop and soothing modal improvisation with the man so brilliant, there is literally a cult who worshipped him as their god. Here's the playlist of songs you will want to track down as soon as the episode is over: 1. Giant Steps (Giant Steps) 2. Central Park West (Coltrane's Sound) 3. Trane's Blues (Trane's Blues) 4. Alabama (Live at Birdland) 5. Blue in Green (Kind of Blue) 6. Acknowledgement (A Love Supreme) 7. My Favorite Things (My Favorite Things) Encore:  Charlie Parker - A Night in Tunisia (Live at the Royal Roost) As always, we'd love to hear from you: crosstawk@gmail.com or follow Jonny on Twitter as @jonnymetts.

  • The Frozen North Dinnercast: Episode 6

    11/04/2012 Duration: 01h11min

After an unexpected hiatus, Frozen North Dinnercast is once again all up in yo' grill. This time around, the gang of four discuss such things as food, what we're hungry for, stuff we haven't eaten in a long time, and restaurants where you can get really good things to eat. I guess everybody was hungry this week. We also try to formalize our outro this week, to hilarious results.

  • Discover Music Project: Episode 41

    06/04/2012 Duration: 01h57min

For the first time since DMP's episodes numbered in single-digits, we present a genre show because sometimes music is too weird and wonderful to be confined to just one artist. Kevin is back to guide Jonny and you, our dear listener, through the mesmerizing world of Minimalism. This modern off-shoot of classical music is beautiful, controversial, hypnotic, annoying... depends who you ask. We think it's pretty cool and definitely worth exploring on a show called Discover Music Project! You'll even hear a funny little composition by your host. Here's the setlist: 1. John Adams - Loops and Verses (Shaker Loops) 2. John Adams - News Has a Kind of Mystery (Nixon in China) 3. John Adams - The Chairman Dances (I Am Love - Soundtrack) 4. Steve Reich - Come Out (Early Works) 5. Jonathan Metts - Aria of Sorrow Voice Jam 6. Philip Glass - Definitions (Naqoyqatsi - Soundtrack) 7. Philip Glass - Company: Second Movement (Company) 8. Philip Glass - Dr. Van Helsing and Dracula (Dracula - Soundtrack) 9. Philip Glass - Spaces

  • Discover Music Project: Episode 40

    23/03/2012 Duration: 01h28min

It's time to celebrate the 40th episode of DMP with a new guest co-host, Kevin Sylves, and a featured musician sure to be a revelation to many of our listeners. This episode is all about Edgar Meyer, recognized as one of the most talented double bassists in the world. Meyer's musical interests are quite diverse, and these selections give equal measure to both classical and bluegrass, with touches of country and jazz to spice things up. Edgar Meyer is also big on collaborations (a good quality in any bass player, as Kevin points out), so you'll also hear from luminaries such as Bela Fleck, Yo-Yo Ma, Jerry Douglass, and Chris Thile. Here's the setlist: 1. Why Don't You Go Back to the Woods (Skip, Hop and Wobble) 2. Pickles (Appalachia Waltz) 3. Zigeunerweisen (Uncommon Ritual) 4. Duet for Cello and Bass (Appalachian Journey) 5. Cello Suite 1, Gigue (Bach: Unaccompanied Cello Suites Performed on Double Bass) 6. Concerto in D, Mvt 3 (Meyer and Bottesini Concertos) 7. Solar (Music for Two) 8. Prelude No 2, BWV 847

  • Discover Music Project: Episode 39

    09/03/2012 Duration: 01h24min

DMP keeps on a-rollin' with Jonny and Bruce covering a band called Guster. Although they aren't terribly famous, Guster's music is infectious pop with great production, sharp vocals, and a dizzying variety of instruments. For a modern companion to the previous Beach Boys episode, you couldn't do much better! Here's the setlist: 1. Barrel of a Gun (Lost and Gone Forever) 2. Amsterdam (Keep It Together) 3. Keep It Together (Keep It Together) 4. This Could All Be Yours (Easy Wonderful) 5. Do You Love Me? (Easy Wonderful) 6. Manifest Destiny (Ganging Up on the Sun) 7. Fa Fa (Lost and Gone Forever) 8.
