  • Discover Music Project: Episode 51

    06/10/2012 Duration: 01h36min

And we're back! Discover Music Project returns after an extended vacation with one of the wildest episodes yet, as Jonny and co-host Amanda Albert peek into the weird, weird world of Frank Zappa. This virtuoso guitarist/composer has been a huge influence on many more famous musicians, yet his own work remains obscure and difficult to broach. In other words, he's a perfect candidate for the DMP treatment, and we have to thank listener Mike Torres for providing many of these song recommendations. This is one of the strangest, most challenging artists we've ever covered on the podcast. Stick with it, and your ears will be rewarded! Here's the setlist: 1. Peaches en Regalia 2. Father Oblivion 3. Son of Orange County 4. Let's Move to Cleveland 5. I'm the Slime 6. Zomby Woof 7. Cosmik Debris 8. Andy 9. Muffin Man 10. Watermelon in Easter Hay (Joe's Garage) Encore: Hampton Grease Band - "Maria" (Music to Eat) This is yet another example of a listener request episode; we'd love to get your own ideas for more music

  • Frozen North Dinnercast 13: The Bookcast

    10/09/2012 Duration: 02h19min

It finally happened. After months of successfully putting it off, we were all forced to talk about...books. We talk about books for over two hours. Zach, Gina, Nelson, Marcus, and Courtney all give their Top Five books in this epic bookcast. Take notes--you may want to read a few of these. More than anything else, we learn that books are Marcus' absolute favorite storytelling medium, at towards the end, he goes on a Terry Pratchett tear that lasts for what seems like half the episode. But then Zach talks about a dinosaur book for way too long, so it all evens out. Not much else to say: this episode is strangely focused. What are your Top Five books? Do any them have to do with a certain Frog and/or Toad? Or a Paddington Bear? Let us know in the comments! Or you can email us at crosstawk@gmail.com. You can subscribe to the show on iTunes, of course--where you should also rate us (nicely). If you like the Frozen North Dinnercast, you might also like the other Crosstawk shows, like Box Office Poison, Discover Mu

  • Crosstawk Presents: The Space Q&A

    08/09/2012 Duration: 45min

Everyone's curious about space, so we asked the NWR community for their questions, and then Jonny tried to answer them on this podcast. The show is hosted and edited by Scott Thompson, who does great work on NWR Connectivity, where this audio originally appeared as a bonus segment. Drop your own questions into the comments section for this episode on Crosstawk, or head over to the NWR forums and contribute to the original thread.

  • Box Office Poison: Episode 38

    06/09/2012 Duration: 01h34min

Back from the terrifying depths of the Black Lagoon, it's Box Office Poison! This episode, we're Stan-less yet again, but we do have plenty to discuss, from the awesome documentary Side by Side to an extended look back on Jurassic Park to The Dictator. Then, in our second segment, we discuss our Movie of the Month: Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes). Did the Spanish Sci-Fi thriller that ultimately gave us Vanilla Sky deliver, or did we avert our eyes in contempt? You'll have to listen to find out. And come back next month when we go to town on Mike's pick: My Cousin Vinny. Thanks for listening, folks. Remember, if you have any thoughts or concerns to share, let us know via email (crosstawk@gmail.com), Twitter (@crosstawk) or in the comments section on the site. • Frozen North Dinnercast 12: The Murray-Signal

    11/08/2012 Duration: 01h56min

Episode 12 of the Frozen North Dinnercast proves to be the most epic podcast of all time. In addition to the regular band of misfits, we've got two East Coast who didn't know any better: all the way from NWR Connectivity, which is Zach's other podcast, comes Neal Ronaghan and his lovely wife Lauren. Couldn't get a better bunch of people together. I'm not saying this show was difficult to edit, but it DID require editing, which is unusual. Beer was consumed, and topics of unspoken social taboos came up. I'm not sure a bunch of white people can discuss this hilarious YouTube video starring Troy Barnes, but it WAS, and I cut that shit out of the show. So there's THAT. But you know what? We talked about other things instead, like Wes Anderson's Batman movie (thanks to Crosstawk Comics for that brilliant spoof. Then there's something about Superman choking a bitch, false allegations that Zach doesn't know how to fucking read, an incredible feature film starring the incomparible Vanilla Ice, a hair-licking cat, and

  • Discover Music Project: Episode 50

    10/08/2012 Duration: 01h50min

We made it! On this exultant fiftieth episode of Discover Music Project, we bring everything full-circle as Jonny and Mike explore the "solo" career of Trey Anastasio, the eclectic guitarist best known as the front man for our inaugural selection, Phish. It turns out that Trey's music outside of the jam band is quite different, and this episode is an attempt to capture that diversity and musical curiosity. You'll hear slick studio-bred pop, complex afro-funk arrangements, delicate acoustic ballads, bombastic live improvisation with a big horn section, and --for the tour de force-- a symphonic suite composed and conducted by Trey himself. Hear for yourself why fans like Jonny fell in love with this music long before developing an appreciation for Phish. 1. Money, Love, and Change (Trey Anastasio) 2. Drifting (Trey Anastasio) 3. Goodbye Head (TAB at the Tab) 4. Push On Til' the Day (Live, 2-25-2011) 5. Sleep feat. Tom Marshall (Live, 5-11-1999) 6. At the Gazebo (Trey Anastasio) 7. Flock of Words (Bonnaroo 2004)

  • Box Office Poison: Episode 36

    03/08/2012 Duration: 50min

BOP is back and it's time to movies, folks! On today's show, Jon and Jonny unfortunately couldn't make it, so Karl, Stan and Mike provide a pretty short show. After briefly discussing such movies as Nosferatu and Extract they launch right into the Movie of the Month: City of God. Was it the Brazilian version of Goodfellas or did the crew lack faith? You'll have to listen in to find out. And remember, if you have anything you'd like to tell us, hit us up via email (crosstawk@gmail.com), Twitter (@crosstawk, @Stan_I_Am, @StrikerObi, @jonnymetts and @jonathanrind, respectively) and in the comments section on the site. And please head on over to iTunes and leave us a review - we desperately need it! Thanks for listening, guys! We'll see you next week for Episode 50 of Discover Music Project!

  • Discover Music Project: Episode 49

    27/07/2012 Duration: 01h29min

After a long hiatus, the original co-host of DMP is back! Mike Sklens returns to the show to present one of his favorite bands: The Hold Steady. These guys not only rock hard but also flood your ears with quick-fire lyrics that are mysterious and often funny. Lead singer/guitarist Craig Finn has a very strange vocal method, but it becomes more familiar and more mature as the band's material evolves through time -- so stick with it! After just a few songs, it's easy to hear why Mike loves the band, and you will probably start to grow on The Hold Steady as well. Here's the setlist: 1. Most People are DJs (Almost Killed Me) 2. You Gotta Dance (Almost Killed Me) 3. Ask Her for Adderall (A Positive Rage -- Bonus Track) 4. Your Little Hoodrat Friend (A Positive Rage) 5. How a Ressurection Really Feels (Separation Sunday) 6. Same Kooks (Boys and Girls in America) 7. Party Pit (Boys and Girls in America) 8. One for the Cutters (Stay Positive) 9. Slapped Actress (Stay Positive) 10. The Weekenders (Heaven is Whenever)

  • Crosstawk Comics: Episode 17

    24/07/2012 Duration: 01h03min

Gus and Karl are back to talk comics, folks! This month, with the release of The Dark Knight Rises just recently passing, we discuss which storylines we'd like to see adapted for the screen next. But first, we go into a spoiler-heavy review of the movie. If you heard the most recent Box Office Poison but wanted to hear about the twists and turns, this is the show to listen to. Have a suggestion of your own? Let us know via Twitter (@crosstawk and @gusslug), email (crosstawk@gmail.com) or via the comments section on the site. Enjoy, guys! We'll see you later in the week for a new DMP!

  • Frozen North Dinnercast: This One Goes to 11

    23/07/2012 Duration: 01h04min

After back-to-back game shows, it's good to get back into the swing of things with a normal "bullshitting" episode of the Frozen North Dinnercast. It's the 11th hour of the 11th episode, so we take it up to 11! This week finds yet ANOTHER new co-host: Justin Marolf, just in from California (and boy are his arms tired). As usual, the topics runs a certain gammut, including whether or not the film Cloverfield sucks (yes), SDCC, and man, how much do pandas suck? Pandas, by the way, really are bears. The taxonomic myth is that they're somehow related to the red panda because they both have "thumbs" which are actually modified carpals, but in fact red pandas are closer to raccoons and giant pandas are bears. At some point during this show, things take a turn towards Box Office Poison--another Crosstawk show you should be listening to. We'll be back again in two weeks, probably with another usual episode. If you have any special requests, drop us a line at crosstawk@gmail.com or leave a comment on the site. You can

    13/07/2012 Duration: 01h20min

On this episode of DMP, Jonny welcomes back podcast hijacker Taylor Hill for a supremely confident tour through the music of Bruce Springsteen. We couldn't possible encapsulate the 40-year career of The Boss in one show, but Taylor's selections show several facets of this prolific songwriter and legendary showman. Here's the setlist: 1. Everybody loves kung-fu-fighting! And also Jeopardy. Due to extremely high* demand, Frozen North Dinnercast is back with another thrilling episode of Jeopardy, co-hosted (and co-written) by Zach and Marcus. The usual cast is around, of course, including Courtney and Nelson (our Returning Champsion), but also Luke Miller, who you may remember from the last episode, and fresh eat Brittney, who gets the most important question of the game right. Who wins? Who loses? You'll just have to slog through the whole show to find out--but I guarantee it's not me or Marcus. *unbelievably low Like what you hear? Rate us on iTunes, or email the show at crosstawk@gmail.com. You can also leave a comment in the show notes at www.crosstawk.com! Follow me on Twitter @zmiller1902, or Marcus @Marchaos1. We also cover such flicks as Jeff Who Lives at Home, Project X, The Machinist and God Bless America.
