Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S5) Umm Kulthoom bint Abu Bakr bore Talha (رضي الله عنهم): Zakariya, Yusuf [Who passed away during infancy] and Aisha (r.h). Talha رضي الله عنه says to his wife Umm Kulthoom (r.h): “You are successful lady, daughter of a successful man [Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه]”. Talha’s رضي الله عنه daughter, Aisha (r.h) was of the most learned Tabi’een. Talha رضي الله عنه had something perhaps unique: He رضي الله عنه had 4 wives who were sisters of The Messenger’s ﷺ wives (رضي الله عنهم); Hamna, sister of Zainab bint Jahsh. Umm Kulthoom, sister of Aisha. Fa’ria, sister of Umm Habeeba and Ruqayya, sister of Umm Salama (رضي الله عنهم). Such was how close Talha’s رضي الله عنه ties were to The Messenger ﷺ!

Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S4) Hamna رضي الله عنها bore Talha رضي الله عنه Muhammad and Imran Ibn Talha رضي الله عنهم. Muhammad Ibn Talha رضي الله عنهم was named by The Messenger ﷺ himself! Muhammad Ibn Talha رضي الله عنهم was known as “as-Sajaad” due to his immense worship/prostrations. He lowered his aunt, the mother of the believers Zainab bint Jahsh رضي الله عنها into her grave. He was martyred in the Battle of the Camel. The Ahlul Bayt (رضي الله عنهم) loved the family of Talha رضي الله عنه: Talha’s رضي الله عنه daughter married Hasan Ibn Ali رضي الله عنهم. When Hasan رضي الله عنه passed away, Hussain Ibn Ali رضي الله عنهم married her! Such a tremendous honour for Talha رضي الله عنه - he was the father in law of both Hasan and Hussain رضي الله عنهم. Another wife of Talha رضي الله عنه: Umm Kulthoom bint Abu Bakr رضي الله عنهم.

Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S3) His noble wives: First is Hamna bint Jahsh رضي الله عنها. She was the first cousin of The Messenger ﷺ, and the sister of our mother, Zainab bint Jahsh رضي الله عنها. Hamna رضي الله عنها was first married to Musab Ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه. After Uhud, The Messenger ﷺ told Hamna رضي الله عنها about the martyrdom of her brother, Abdullah Ibn Jahsh, her uncle Hamza and her husband Musab رضي الله عنهم. Hamna رضي الله عنها supplied water to the warriors at Uhud. A dangerous battle, an even braver woman. Talha رضي الله عنه nobly offered to marry Hamna رضي الله عنها after finding out Musab رضي الله عنه was martyred. She already had a daughter, Zainab bint Musab.

Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S2) His family: Not much is known regarding his father. His mother is as-Sa’aba bint al-Khadrami رضي الله عنها. She was from Yemen and embraced Islam after her son, but still during the Makkan period. She had a famous brother: al-Alaa Ibn al-Khadrami رضي الله عنه. Alaa Ibn al-Khadrami رضي الله عنه thus was the maternal uncle of Talha رضي الله عنه. He رضي الله عنه was a scribe. Many miracles occurred which involved Alaa رضي الله عنه… Alaa had 10 brothers, one being Shurayh Ibn al-Khadrami رضي الله عنه, thus he was also the maternal uncle of Talha رضي الله عنه.

Talha Ibn Ubaydullah رضي الله عنه (S1) - The Living Martyr One of the ten promised Paradise The 4 signs of love; 1) To emulate, 2) To learn about [them], 3) To mention frequently and 4) to love what they love. His name and lineage: Abu Muhammad Talha [رضي الله عنه] Ibn Ubaydullah Ibn Uthmaan Ibn Amr Ibn Ka’ab Ibn Sa’ad Ibn Taym Ibn Murrah. Abu Bakr and Talha رضي الله عنهم were from the same tribe: Banu Taym. They were second cousins, as their grandfathers were brothers. Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه was 23 years older. Talha رضي الله عنه shares the common ancestor “Murrah” with The Messenger ﷺ. He رضي الله عنه was born 15 years before The Messenger ﷺ proclaimed, making Talha 25 years younger than The Messenger ﷺ. He رضي الله عنه was handsome, of a brownish, wheatish complexion. He had a narrow nose, had lots of hair which was neither straight nor curly. He didn’t dye it. He was of medium height, and he was thin, with a large chest and broad shoulders and feet - thus had an athletic, ripped build.

Muazh Ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه (S61) - Final Session Some of the Companions who were martyred by the plague; Abu Ubaydah, Muazh, Shurahbeel Ibn Hasana, Yazeed Ibn Abu Sufyan, Fadl Ibn Abaas, Suhayl Ibn Amr, Haarith Ibn Hishaam (رضي الله عنهم). Abu Ubaydah, Muazh and his son, Abdul Rahman (رضي الله عنهم) are buried next to eachother in Jordan - an honour for the residents! The Messenger ﷺ: “My Companions [رضي الله عنهم] will be a guide and a light for the land they pass away in, on The Day of Judgement”. The people of Jordan will have Muazh Ibn Jabal! رضي الله عنه. May Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى allow us to reunite with him, and be resurrected with him [رضي الله عنه] on that Awesome Day. Ameen.

Muazh Ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه (S60) Muazh رضي الله عنه showed utmost patience when his son رضي الله عنه was martyred by the plague. Muazh رضي الله عنه himself was wounded in battle. On his deathbed, Muazh رضي الله عنه appeared to be uttering something. He elucidated: “My son came to me and told me The Messenger ﷺ, Angels (a.s), Saints and Martyrs will attend my Janazah then take me to Paradise”. The Messenger ﷺ [in part of a report]: “When a believers soul leaves his body, he is like a man out of prison. He roams on the Earth freely”. (This is for the souls of righteous believers). The more pious a person, the more he can roam. The lowest rank [thus every believer for definite] gets to see/know who is visiting them when they are in their graves. You only recognise the person if you knew them in real life however. Saintly souls can roam where they wish. So, what of Prophets! (a.s). The Messenger ﷺ for definite could attend the Janazah of Muazh رضي الله عنه.

Muazh Ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه (S59) Muazh’s رضي الله عنه parting to Firdaus: Muazh رضي الله عنه was on his death bed, his tongue moist with Zhikr - a deed which The Messenger ﷺ told Muazh رضي الله عنه [in their final conversation] is the most beloved to Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى. Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى: “I offer all goodness to the believer who praises Me when I am taking his soul out of his body”. Thus passed away; The one who The Messenger ﷺ said is one of his best Companions [رضي الله عنهم], an excellent man, the one who fell of the mule thrice with The Messenger ﷺ, the Badri, the most learned in matters of Halal and Haram, 1 of 4 collectors of the Qur’an during The Messenger’s ﷺ lifetime, the one who also gave fatwah therein, teacher of Palestine, governor of Yemen, the subduer of shaytaan, the Muhajiroon from the Ansar, the one whose Janazah The Messenger ﷺ, Angels (a.s) and noble souls [رضي الله عنهم] attended (Even though The Messenger ﷺ had passed away before him رضي الله عنه), the one who

Muazh Ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه (S58) Muazh’s رضي الله عنه sister began to wail. when Muazh رضي الله عنه regained consciousness, he said: “Whenever you wailed, an Angel (a.s) asked me: ‘Are you really as she says?’”. (Similar occurred to another Companion, Abdullah Ibn Rawaha رضي الله عنه). Thus, if the likes of these 2 blessed souls (رضي الله عنهم) were asked by Angels (a.s), then what of us? Wailing is prohibited. One may cry and grieve, but do not be excessive. Muazh رضي الله عنه was overcome by anxiety on his deathbed. When asked why, he رضي الله عنه said: “By Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى, it’s not due to fear of death or due to a debt. It’s due to The Messenger ﷺ saying: ‘2 Handfuls of souls were taken, one for Paradise and one for Hell’. I don’t know which handful I was in…”. One must ponder, which handful was you in…? Surah [18:49]: “and your Lord [سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى] treats no one with injustice”.

Muazh Ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه (S57) Close to his passing, Muazh رضي الله عنه would faint. When he regained consciousness, he’d say: “O Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى, You know full well I love You. O death, your coming is blessed. A blessed guest! But I am poor [deeds]. You know my Lord سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى I always feared You. Now I have hope. I love life: not to dig and plant [i.e orchards etc] but to be thirsty on a hot day [fasting]. To sacrifice for You سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى and to sit with the scholars in gatherings”. The Pangs of death were most severe on Muazh رضي الله عنه. Our Mother, Aisha رضي الله عنها: “I do not envy anyone who has an easy death”. A believer is rewarded for the good he does in this life and in the next. The disbeliever gets the reward for the good they did in this life - for in the next life they’ll have nothing. Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى is The Most Just.

Muazh Ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه (S56) Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه recalls the incident of the two blessed sandals of The Messenger ﷺ… Muazh رضي الله عنه kept a Hadith hidden from the people and only revealed it on his death bed… Prophets (a.s) have the hardest tests. Then those closest to them. Then the scholars, then the righteous. What of Muazh? رضي الله عنه. He is of the closest to The Messenger ﷺ, a stones throw ahead of the scholars and is of the righteous! Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى gives the toughest tests to His most beloved servants.

Muazh Ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه (S54) Muazh’s رضي الله عنه two wives passed away from the plague. Muazh رضي الله عنه drew lots to decide which to lower into the grave first - showcasing his utmost Taqwa. The blessed wives were buried in the same grave. The passing of Abu Ubaydah رضي الله عنه: He and his family initially weren’t affected. He made dua that his family be given a share. Abu Ubaydah رضي الله عنه, now dying, gave his final advice. Muazh, Amr Ibn al-Aas and Dahaak Ibn Qays رضي الله عنهم lowered Abu Ubaydah رضي الله عنه into his grave. Muazh رضي الله عنه began to praised him…

Muazh Ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه (S53) When the Plague of Amwaas struck, Muazh رضي الله عنه made dua that his family be given a fair share: they all were martyred by it. His 2 blessed daughters were martyred first. His son, Abdul Rahman Ibn Muazh رضي الله عنهم also caught it. He رضي الله عنه was most beloved to Muazh. When Muazh رضي الله عنه caught it, a man started weeping. Muazh رضي الله عنه asked why. The man said: “I used to get my knowledge from you, now what will I do when you leave?!”. Muazh رضي الله عنه comforted him, saying: “Do not weep. Ibraaheem (a.s) recieved knowledge from Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى even when knowledge wasn’t available. After me, seek knowledge from 4; Abdullah Ibn Masood, Abdullah Ibn Salaam, Salman al-Farsi and Abu Darda رضي الله عنهم”. It can be said that the plague of Amwaas was a recalling of the Companions رضي الله عنهم back to their Lord, سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى. Their duty of establishing the Religion was complete. Muazh Ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه (S52) The Plague of Amwaas, 18 A.H: around 30,000 Muslims were martyred by this plague, including many Companions رضي الله عنهم. It occurred around half way through Umar’s رضي الله عنه Khilafat. The Messenger ﷺ tells Muazh رضي الله عنه about the plague and that he will migrate to Shaam… When Muazh رضي الله عنه was affected by the plague, he said it was more beloved to him than being given red camels. He made dua his entire family be given a share of the plague - they all were martyred by it. Plagues used to be a punishment, but for this Ummah it is a mercy. It grants one martyrdom, however you must be patient, not flee, expect reward and know it is the degree of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى. Muazh رضي الله عنه: “The plague is martyrdom. It is a mercy. It is a dua of The Messenger ﷺ”.

Muazh Ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه (S51) Umar رضي الله عنه asked some men around him: “What are your wishes?”. One man replied: “That this room be full of silver and I spend it in the path of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى”. Umar رضي الله عنه wasn’t impressed. Another said: “that it be filled with gold” and another: “that it be filled with rubies and I spend it in the Path of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى”. Umar رضي الله عنه still wasn’t impressed. The men wondered what the right answer was. Umar رضي الله عنه said: “I wish this room was full of men like Abu Ubaydah, Muazh Ibn Jabal and Hudayfah Ibn al-Yaman [رضي الله عنهم], so I could employ them to serve the Deen”. Wealth is the standard for the people of the world, the standard for the God-fearing is Taqwa. Umar رضي الله عنه heard of the plague outbreak in Shaam. He رضي الله عنه said: “If I am martyred by the plague, my successor is Abu Ubaydah رضي الله عنه. If Abu Ubaydah رضي الله عنه passes before me, then my successor is Muazh Ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه”. Muazh Ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه (S50) Muazh رضي الله عنه, now in Shaam (Palestine/Jordan) was teaching the masses. He رضي الله عنه would sometimes perform 5 Takbeers in the Janazah Salah, the usual being 4. This was to honour the deceased, depending on who it was. Imam Ali رضي الله عنه performed 6 Takbeers for his paired brother, Sahl Ibn Hunayf رضي الله عنه and said it was due to him being a Badri. Ali رضي الله عنه would do 5 Takbeers for the Companions (رضي الله عنهم) and 4 for the Muslims. The Messenger ﷺ himself did 9 Takbeers for his beloved uncle, Hamza رضي الله عنه - The Lion of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وتَعَالَى). Umar رضي الله عنه loved the advice and words of Abu Ubaydah and Muazh رضي الله عنهم. Umar رضي الله عنه told them (رضي الله عنهم) to never stop writing to him. The one who consults never regrets. Only a buffoon would not consult with the people…

Muazh Ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه (S49) During these clashes, Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه passed away and Umar رضي الله عنه succeeded him. Umar رضي الله عنه called back Muazh رضي الله عنه. Muazh رضي الله عنه: “Salvation lies in 3 things; Purity in deeds. Salah, for it represents the entire Religion. Obedience, in which lies protection”. The Messenger ﷺ said to Muazh رضي الله عنه: “Obey the leader. Offer Salah behind any Imam. Never curse any of my Companions [رضي الله عنهم]”. The people were coming to Islam in flocks in Shaam - Yazeed Ibn Abu Sufyan رضي الله عنهم writes to Umar رضي الله عنه to send some teachers. Muazh Ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه (S48) Muazh رضي الله عنه was involved in the campaigns during Abu Bakr’s رضي الله عنه Khilafat. The cousin of Muazh رضي الله عنه, Asma bint Yazeed Ibn Sakan رضي الله عنها killed 9 Romans with a tent pole in the Battle of Yarmook. Muazh Ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه (S47) During the reign of the 2 Shaykhs رضي الله عنهم: Whenever Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه needed men of knowledge for a meeting, he’d gather Umar, Uthmaan, Ali, Abdul Rahman Ibn Awf, Muazh Ibn Jabal, Ubayy Ibn Ka’ab & Zayd Ibn Thaabit رضي الله عنهم. (Muazh رضي الله عنه even gave fatwa during the lifetime of The Messenger ﷺ). Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه dismisses Khalid Ibn Sa’eed رضي الله عنه and puts in his place Shurahbeel Ibn Hasana رضي الله عنه. Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه informs Shurahbeel رضي الله عنه to consult with 3 excellent men who will yield excellent results; Abu Ubaydah, Muazh Ibn Jabal and Khalid Ibn Sa’eed رضي الله عنهم. Muazh رضي الله عنه seeks permission to participate in Jihad in Shaam. Umar رضي الله عنه doesn’t want Muazh رضي الله عنه to go for Jihad, as he was such an ocean of knowledge that the people needed him…
