Picturing a President/Music, Light and Glass
15/04/2015This week marks the 150th anniversary of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Today we'll look back at the remarkable life and times of our 16th President with the curator of The Chrysler Museum's two Lincoln exhibits.Segment B: Music, Light and Glass Local patrons of the arts will be no stranger to the dazzling artwork of master glassblower, Dale Chihuly. The artist's incredible glass sculptures will take new life this weekend as set pieces for the Virginia Symphony Orchestra's performance of Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle. We're joined today by the Chihuly Studio's Head of Exhibition's for a closer look at how seven of the artist's most stunning sculptures brought new life to the classic opera.

13/04/2015Libraries across Hampton Roads are teaming up to build a sense of community between citizens of neighboring cities by encouraging them to read and discuss the same book: Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. We'll discuss the region-spanning initiative, and consider the six decade impact of Bradbury's seminal work. Segment B: A Taxing Time of Year Does the mention of "April 15th" fill you with hope for a big tax refund, or strike fear into your financially miss-managed heart!? As the deadline for filing your taxes approaches, we'll consider some of the big taxpayer missteps to avoid and how best to proceed if you're a few years behind in filing a return.

A Stroke of Insight
02/04/2015On the morning of December 10, 1996, Jill Bolte Taylor, a thirty-seven-year-old Harvard-trained brain scientist, experienced a massive stroke when a blood vessel exploded in the left side of her brain. A neuroanatomist by profession, she observed her own mind completely deteriorate to the point that she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life, all within the space of four brief hours. In her book, My Stroke of Insight, Taylor shares her unique perspective on the brain and its capacity for recovery, and the sense of omniscient understanding she gained from this unusual and inspiring voyage out of the abyss of a wounded brain. She joins us to discuss her incredible eight year journey to heal completely.

The Power of a Veto
31/03/2015Last week, Governor Terry McAuliffe announced that he has signed 733 bills passed by the Virginia General Assembly, vetoed 17 and amended 50 others, including tightening ethics reforms. On today's HearSay we'll take a closer look at the bills that didn't make the cut and consider the Governor's reasoning behind those 17 vetoes.

A Flood of New Costs
30/03/2015This April Fool's Day, a congressional act that revised federal insurance premiums goes into effect. Coastal homeowners, including many here in Hampton Roads, don't find anything funny about the new costs. The government is slowly phasing out subsidized flood insurance for more than a million Americans with houses in flood zones who, in some cases, pay half the true commercial rate. We'll take a closer look at the local impacts of the new rates and hear how residents across our region are bracing for the flood of new costs.
