    A recent study from the University of Virginia revealed that about one-third of Virginia's students aren't ready for kindergarten in at least one learning category. About 20 percent of students lack the needed social skills, 11 percent lack literacy skills, and 8.5 percent aren't ready for math, according to the report. Today we're joined by the researchers responsible for the report, and local literacy experts, for a look at how parents can better prepare young children for lifetime of successful learning.

We're joined today by Dr. Aaron Spence, who assumed the leadership of Virginia Beach City Public Schools in June of last year. He oversees the operation of 86 schools (serving almost 69,000 students) and is himself a graduate of Green Run High School in Virginia Beach.

    The College of William & Mary has recently named Sara Khan as the 2015 Kraemer Middle East Distinguished Scholar-in-Residence. Khan is the director of Inspire, a women's human rights and counter-terrorism organization which seeks to address inequalities facing British Muslim women. The yearly offered position provides the opportunity for a scholar specializing in Islamic law and governance to spend a short period of time at William & Mary sharing his or her expertise with the university community. She joins us today to share that expertise with our listeners, in advance of her Tuesday lecture at the College.

  • Doing Something about Diabetes

    Western Tidewater has one of the highest rates of Diabetes, and deaths as a result of the disease, anywhere in Virginia. A new partnership between the Obici Healthcare Foundation and Eastern Virginia Medical School is bringing new treatment and care options to residents of Suffolk and surrounding cities with the opening of the EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center of Western Tidewater. The weekly clinic will offer screenings, lifestyle intervention and a focus on areas commonly struck by serious complications of diabetes such as the kidneys, eyes and feet. We're joined today by the center's founders for a conversation about the disease and the vital services the new center will provide.
