005 Marathon Pioneer Kathrine Switzer on Moving Ahead Fearlessly
04/04/2017 Duration: 29minToday’s episode is about Kathrine Switzer, Bev’s friend and my long-time idol. Way back in 1967 Kathrine changed attitudes about women’s running and women’s athletic potential by running 26.2 miles at the Boston Marathon. She was the first American woman to officially run and finish this prestigious race. Her participation was timely, but not without controversy, as the “Women’s Movement” for equality and awareness was gaining momentum. Women were making great strides in the workforce, in sports, in politics, and even their very personal choices of their right to choose birth control and child bearing options. Kathrine’s story goes way beyond running a marathon. We are honored to have her with us today to celebrate in the 50th anniversary of her 1967 race in Boston and to let her share her story of women’s empowerment that began way back then and continues to this day. Kathrine’s story is an inspiration and a call to action for all women. Her international organization 261fearless.org offers an opportunity fo
