Corbin Burnes was dominant last night, as he usually is against the St. Louis Cardinals. Combine that with an over-aggressive (and rare) mistake by Brendan Donovan and you get a 2-0 loss. The St. Louis Cardinals dropped two of three over the weekend in Boston, and the main takeaway is that this bullpen needs help. Giovanny Gallegos and Ryan Helsley were not used, so the rest of the 'pen got a chance to step up and they did not. Both Friday and Sunday saw 9th-inning comebacks squandered due to late runs given up by the bullpen in the 7th or 8th innings.This week's series against the Brewers is as important as a series can get in mid June. Both teams are 38-30, so the Cardinals will be looking to take advantage of four games against their division rival. Jack Flaherty's return to the St. Louis Cardinals was underwhelming. There's no denying that, but what we can do is be patient with Flaherty as he works his way back. Miles Mikolas turned in 8.2 innings of spectacular work yesterday for the St. Louis Cardinals. He gave up just one hit in the ninth, and his last two performances are begging the question: is he a Cy Young Candidate? While that might be a dark horse, Paul Goldschmidt is definitely a favorite for the MVP. While it was not in incredibly convincing fashion, the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds twice over the weekend. A series win is a series win, but the series against the Pirates needs to be much more convincing. There were a few positives for the St. Louis Cardinals this week (Dakota Hudson, Tyler O'Neill, Miles Mikolas) despite getting swept by the Tampa Bay Rays. That said, obviously it was a net negative going 0-3 at the Trop. St. Louis now must wipe its memory and try to take advantage of playing a bad Reds team at home for three games. While long term confidence in this team is there, the short term raises some questions. With the team still waiting on starters to return, the pitching depth is being pushed to its brink. Dakota Hudson turned in his second consecutive dominant start last night, showing once again the type of starter he can be. Hudson's seven strong innings should've been enough for the win, but the Cardinal offense was stymied by the Rays' pitching staff. St. Louis has been able to piece together innings so far this season, but we are starting to see the depth being pushed to the edge. The reliable bullpen arms are being forced to make starts because of injuries to the rotation. Can this team continue to win while they wait for Flaherty + Matz to return? Brendan Donovan showed off his defensive prowess as well as his clutch bat, Nolan Gorman showcased his power and the whole Cardinal pitching staff showed how deep they really are. Adam Wainwright and Genesis Cabrera dominated the Cubs on Sunday, Zach Thompson was impressive in his MLB debut Friday, and Ryan Helsley and Giovanny Gallegos both impressed on Saturday. The St. Louis Cardinals completed the sweep of the San Diego Padres yesterday behind a brilliant pitching performance from Dakota Hudson and a 3-hit, 3-rbi day from Nolan Arenado. Hudson has struggled this season, but his start yesterday showed that he still can have upside as a big league starter.
