286: Getting Real with Mark Patchett — Growth Shope
17/11/2021 Duration: 36minLet’s talk about growth; more specifically, growth with a focus on strategy and how it relates to technology. Today’s guest has seen some of the same mistakes over and over and shares his entrepreneurial story of how he grew. Mark Patchett is the Founder of Growth Shop and helps businesses scale with efficiency. He has spent over 10 years in the space and has helped over 250 companies with their growth; everything from startups to big brands like The BBC, The Economist, and more. Before going his own way, Mark had a lot of experience working with global brands when he got started in his career. However, he noticed something interesting; there was a gap in the marketplace for a service that could help small-scale entrepreneurs grow really quickly, and who often didn’t have access to big VC capital. From Mark’s experience, you didn’t need access to an expensive team, you just needed to know the fundamentals of what growth looked like. Mark saw so many complicated growth strategy plans that smaller businesses ha

285: Michael Hsu — Cash Forecasting Best Practices
10/11/2021 Duration: 43minA lot of entrepreneurs do not understand their finances very well. You can be good at math, but bad at money! Today’s guest breaks down how you can be intentional with this piece so you can scale up more effectively. Michael Hsu has spent the last 10 years working with entrepreneurs and educating them on financial literacy. He has turned his years of knowledge into a methodology called MEASURE x HACK, which aims to not only give someone financial freedom but help them intentionally create a successful business (and lifestyle). The world of cash management and cash forecasting is incredibly murky. How do you realistically predict what you’re going to make before you make it? As CEOs of a company, you simply cannot be emotionally affected by the day-to-day operations of the business. Money, and lack of it, severely impacts your ability to think big-picture and long-term. Michael isn’t sure if we willfully choose not to see the cash flow warning signs or if we simply are unable to see them. So many times an entr

Tuesday’s Tips — Solving a Bad Habit
09/11/2021 Duration: 04minDo you have a bad habit? Something you just wished you could stop doing? However, no matter how conscious you are of it, it just keeps coming up? Bill had a client that couldn’t help but interrupt people. She knows it’s a weakness, but she simply couldn’t bite her tongue for long enough! How do you get over something like this? We often think faster than we talk. If you’re verbal, if you like to say what’s on your mind, chances are you’re going to blurt out what’s on your mind! This idea that you can stop doing this is a fallacy. You’re never going to fully eliminate this trait, but you can reduce it. The solution to working on any bad habit? Self-awareness and responsibility. Know your weaknesses, write them down if you have to, and own them. We try to cover up our weaknesses, but that just makes us appear even more inauthentic. If you own it, even call it out, apologize for it, people will come to know what to expect with you. Resources: Scaling Up Summits (Select Bill Gallagher as your coach during regis

284: James Williams — The Business of You

If you feel overwhelmed, drained, or like you’re just not in an optimal place, this episode is for you! James Williams is a Certified High Performance Coach through the High Performance Institute and helps his clients break through their own inner ceilings. His mission and passion in life are to master the physical, mental, and emotional performance in his own life goals, as well as to help his clients achieve the same. James started in TV and production before switching careers, largely due to his wife, who was already working within the coaching industry. However, he was seeing her burn out. He thought there had to be a better way and he wanted to help. There are so many people who passionately want to achieve something, but they almost always get stuck in their own way. James helps people achieve what they want, not what they think they can have. There’s a lot of unconscious incompetence in people who spend a

Tuesday’s Tips — Misreading People
02/11/2021 Duration: 03minAre you currently working with some hard-to-read characters? No matter what you do, you just can’t seem to pinpoint where they’re at emotionally? When you work with a wide range of personalities, this is bound to happen! Bill was hosting a workshop and couldn’t help but notice a woman who looked visibly upset at Bill. Her body language was throwing him slightly off and he was concerned about it. He approached her and it turned out she was deeply invested in the workshop! She was inspired by the talk! She was just tired. It was a powerful insight for Bill. We get invested in our ability to “read” people, but sometimes we just get that part plain wrong. The biggest takeaway Bill learned was to not assume! Instead, check in and validate. Ask questions and come in with an open mind about it. You never know what you might find. 27/10/2021 Duration: 43minRolly Keenan — Going from Chief Marketing Officer to Chief Revenue Officer Is it time for you to switch your chief executives around? Today’s guest breaks down why it might be more beneficial for your organization to have an all-driving C-suite executive (that’s not the CEO) to help manage revenue and growth. Rolly Keenan is a serial entrepreneur and the Chief Revenue Officer at Tegrita. A trained hostage negotiator, Rolly brings 20 years of experience and has worked and led teams at LinkedIn, Oracle, Gallup, and more. Rolly is also the author of the book, CMO to CRO. Sales and marketing technology is starting to merge. As Rolly and his team thought more about this, he realized that things are much more complex and don’t always fall within the sales and/or marketing branch. In fact, sales and marketing should not be separate, they should report to a revenue leader to help keep track of respective growth. Why is the CMO the best person for the CRO position and not the sales leader? Whenever people a

19/10/2021 Duration: 05minDo you feel like there’s a disconnect between how people are relating to you and how you see your brand? Or do you believe your team is slightly ‘out of touch’? Bill can relate! He was recently working with a company where one of the leaders saw themselves a certain way, but the rest of the executive team saw themselves leading in a completely different way. How do you get on the same page? Bill loves to conduct leadership assessment interviews. This really gains insight into who you are as a leader and how other people within your organization see you. You can start off easy, like what your strengths are, before diving full force into the real meaty stuff. You will hear things that might sting. During this time, it’s important to be graceful, and to try to take as much as you can in stride. Remember, you’re trying to be a better leader! What’s really powerful about this exercise is that you can hear where you’re missing some expectations, and work quickly to resolve it. Resources: Scaling Up for

12/10/2021 Duration: 02minAre you trying to figure out what your brand promise is? Do you feel like your statement is too generic? It just doesn’t click with the team? Bill’s got a tip for you! If you feel like your brand promise looks and feels like everyone else’s, your biggest step is to go out there and talk with your customers. What’s different about you? Really tap into their head to get the full landscape of what makes you stand out. 280: Shawn Khorrami — The Business Is the Product
06/10/2021 Duration: 36minWe’re diving in on being overly product or service-focused in this week’s episode, and some of the challenges that brings. What should you focus on? The overall machine of the business so that it’s adaptable, and not dependent on -one- thing. Shawn Khorrami is a Serial Entrepreneur and has run more than a dozen businesses over the years, some of which have reached up to $100 million in revenue. When Shawn was still in highschool, he helped local business owners automate parts of their operations through software, and that was what kick started his entrepreneurial path. Unfortunately, too many young business owners think that their product will make their business. Their product, or service, is the missing piece to success. That is rarely the case. Just because you have a great product doesn’t mean you have a great business. The important lesson here and the pitfall you want to avoid is: You can not neglect the business side of things, on top of your product. If you think you are superman or superwoman in your

Tuesday’s Tips — How to Create Early Stage Company Values
05/10/2021 Duration: 03minAre you an early-stage company? Are you in the process of creating a new division or product? Now is an excellent time to create some company values for your business. It’s actually quite simple! You know the importance of creating company values, but you’ve got an early-stage company, so how do you create values when everything is almost duct-taped together, and you’re still trying to find your wings? Since you’re so new, you don’t have anybody to really bounce your values off of and see what resonates with the team. What do you do? Take a step back and think about the company you’re building. Think about the types of people you worked for, and with, in the past. What values did you like from them? What did you enjoy the most? Make a list of your dream team and then build it out from there. Your next step is to then make a list of people you would never want to have in your company. Think bad bosses, bad people, really map out all the “bad apples” you’ve worked alongside. They could even be friends, who you

279: David Wood — Addressing the Mouse and the Elephant in the Room
29/09/2021 Duration: 48minMost of us are aware that when we have an elephant in the room, as leaders, we have to address it as quickly as possible, but we rarely address the small mice in the room; which can lead to bigger problems down the line. Are you running your business as efficiently as possible? How many hidden mice do you have? This week’s guest has some insights. David has noticed that there are so many subtle things happening in a room that never get addressed at all, things that just get swept under the rug, and those are the little mice that we have to pay attention to. We’re so quick to brush things off, perhaps it’s a society thing, or perhap

Tuesday’s Tips — Your Business Purpose
28/09/2021 Duration: 03minDo you struggle to find out the why of your business? What is your purpose? What about your company’s purpose? Do they match or is it all a bit murky? Let’s dive into it. Bill was working with a company in the HR staffing industry. The CEO/Owner didn’t really see a point to having a purpose for his company. Do you really actually need one? The owner bought the company to make money and pay the mortgage. It’s a business after all. Bill asked him to indulge him. There’s a bigger meaning to the company. Bill asked him a series of questions like, what difference does his company make in the lives of others, and he kept probing why it matters to him. It might sound redundant but after peeling off enough layers and asking this same question in different ways, you get a profound ah-ha moment on why you care so much about the industry and the people you serve. You can use this to build your purpose. Resources: Scaling Up for Business Growth Workshop: Take the first step to mastering the Rockefeller Habits by attend

Tuesday’s Tips — Helpful Tools to Better Deal with a Crisis
21/09/2021 Duration: 04minBack in 2008, we found ourselves dealing with some pretty serious financial events. Sometimes these experiences are collective; the whole economy felt the impacts of the 2008 crash. The same was true in 2020. Because of the 2008 crash, Bill had tools and strategies already prepared that when 2020 hit, he was able to pull out his toolbox and adjust accordingly. The first step is to triage the situation. Where can you buy some breathing room to really assess the situation? You want to begin to preserve cash, and hold on to the core of your business as best as you can. The next step is to use the SWT tool (say "SWEAT"). It’s a little bit of a more strategic version of the SWOT analysis tool. SWT focuses more on upcoming trends and gaps in the company. And then finally, we want to connect the dots. Now that you have this information, what’s the most logical move forward? Tuesday’s Tips — How to Work with People who Trigger You
14/09/2021 Duration: 05minThere are certain types of people in life that you just can not click with. You just don’t like them and you actively avoid them. However, is this the best way to deal with it? Bill has some thoughts. One of Bill’s clients found himself really triggered by an employee. He had no real idea where this was coming from. Everything about this person just rubbed him the wrong way, and it felt weird and wrong to just let the guy go when there was no clear reason as to “why.” Bill wanted his client to go deeper. Who else has triggered him like this in his past? Bill also asked his client to examine himself, too, when he felt a trigger happening. What was going on? What was he doing in particular? Let’s get to the bottom of this. At first, he was overwhelmed. As he developed more self-awareness of himself and his surroundings, he noticed these traits in people he loved the most. Instead of tackling it straight on and letting people know that he didn’t like something, he would instead write it off like it wasn’t a big
