EP24 - Speech Pacing - Keeping Things Interesting
27/09/2019 Duration: 20minYour speaking pace is an important key component of engaged, entertaining communication. Mastering your speaking pace and knowing when to slow down versus speed up is important in ultimately communicating your message clearly. I've said it before but it's not what you say, but how you say it that is important. Practicing this skill is helpful to communicate certain ideas and knowing which ideas are best delivered slowly or fast is helpful to your listener. Your job as a speaker is in packaging the content in the correct context. 100 word stories Speech rate guidelines: Slow: Less than 110 wpm Conversational: Between 120 wpm and 150 wpm Fast: More than 160 wpm Radio hosts and podcasters: 150-160 wpm Auctioneeers: 250-400 wpm Calculating your Speech Rate = # words / duration of time About the Show: AccentOutLoud is your weekly source for English communication, insights, experimentation, and inspiration. EP23 - Engaging Speech: The Trifecta of Loudness, Pitch and Length
20/09/2019 Duration: 15minLoudness, Pitch and Length are the trifecta of engaging speech. Mastering each of these suprasegmental aspects of English communication presents a speaker with the capability to communicate nuance and command attention. Without it, you may be understood in content but the delivery may be lackluster, monotonous and ultimately fall on deaf ears. These aspects of English communication are not consistently discussed in language learning schools to the degree that I think is necessary as compared with grammar and it can communicate (even unconsciously) lack of confidence. EP22 - Native English Speaker Learns Hard-to-Pronounce Words
13/09/2019 Duration: 07minStumbled upon 31 Commonly Mispronounced Words and figured it would be helpful to hear a native English speaker struggle, think and learn pronunciations of words. A key insight is that native English speakers aren't crippled by the incongruencies between a word's pronunciation and its spelling. Non-native English speakers focus very heavily on this mismatch and at times, are paralyzed by it rather than being able to move on. Native English speakers will naturally encounter new words that they have never heard before. As the language adopts new words, there will naturally be new words or old words that become popular. Native English speakers will extract the value by hearing the pronunciation and associate it with the visual representation of the word, but are NOT crippled by any mismatch that occurs because there is ALREADY an acceptance of exceptions to the spelling. Being comfortable with that mismatch is the key to being comfortable with English. About the Show: AccentOutLoud is your weekly source for

EP20 - Pakistani English: A Bungled Pronunciation?
16/08/2019 Duration: 16minIn this episode, I ruminate over a recent journal article read about Pakistani-English and the frustrations associated with English language learning centers in Pakistan. Many of the raised concerns are factors that are not even directly related to the techniques or processes in teaching English, but based on the socio-cultural standing of the learners and country. Although I have concerns with the methodology of the investigation, the qualitative sentiment that the author communicates is palpable and establishes some potentially detrimental concerns with predictable repercussions. EP17 - Canadian R Sound
26/07/2019 Duration: 14minWhile prepping for a client session focused on the Canadian R sound, I figured I might as well document my prep and explain several ways to achieve the R sound. Canadian English has a rhotic R which is present in all locations. What that means is that any time you see the letter R, we pronounce it. Furthermore, in Canadian English, the sound is made using a stiff or tense tongue. It is not relaxed and flapping against the roof of your mouth like the trilled R sound that is present in other languages. EP12 - Get Out: Satirical Horror Comedy with a SLP twist
21/06/2019 Duration: 12minI finally got around to watching Get Out (2017) 2 years later!! Loved it and of course, found some interesting communication and accent nuances that developed the character feel. It was critical to distinguish the two characters within the single actor and the language aspect helped make that distinction much clearer. EP11 - Learning English from a Non-native English Speaker
14/06/2019 Duration: 06minNon-native English speakers teach English across the globe to other non-native English speakers. And there's nothing wrong with that. The question I have is whether there are additional criteria or training to target native English speech production. Without a model to appropriately imitate or follow, learning a native English accent can be a challenge because the speech patterns and nuanced prosody are lost or not fully communicated. Hopefully, I can shed more light on the topic once I get a space set up for video production! I am hyped to get it all set up! EP10 - New Gear!? Youtube Channel on the Horizon
07/06/2019 Duration: 10minHi Everyone! Not a full episode but I was just too excited to share that I bought some lighting equipment towards the equipment for youtube content. Hopefully that's another way I can share and explain mouth movements in speech to better show the theoretical knowledge I have. It's a far away goal to make some sort of educational youtube channel to better explain what I mean with accent modification and mouth shape. Hearing is only half the battle and the visual cues are helpful in learning proper mouth positions. I have yet to see something on the internet that is up to par with what I think I can do, so I've taken the investment to try and do it myself. Yes, I could very well start my youtube channel with a cell phone but the barrier of entry for decent production is low enough that I'm interested in investing =). I'm super excited and hope to share my journey exploring accents and English communication with you guys! About the Show: AccentOutLoud is your weekly source for English communica
