  • EP09 - The Secret to Powerful Communication: Sentence Stress

    31/05/2019 Duration: 18min

Without a doubt, sentence stress is a crucial skill in the English language. However, it is not something that is emphasized in English learning classes. Native English speakers use it as a fundamental tool to guide communication and although non-native English speakers hear it, without the explicit intention of practicing and honing this skill, they don't use it.   About the Show: AccentOutLoud is your weekly source for English  communication, insights, experimentation, and inspiration. Every  Thursday (and sometimes more) I'll share my personal take on English  communication, tips of English communication and what I think is  important in clear communication. 17/05/2019 Duration: 15min

Having stumbled upon this gem by G. Nolst Trenite, "The Chaos" reveals the inconsistent, ambiguous and challenging skill that is speaking English. Tune in as I blunder my way through the poem and follow along with the poem in front of you to see the spelling as well.  p.s. yes, I now know I pronounce corps. incorrectly. • EP06 - Two approaches to accent modification: Traditional and Functional

    12/04/2019 Duration: 08min

Sharing my thoughts on how to approach accent modification and what are two ways to approach the issue. by better having an understanding of how to approach accent modification as a whole, you can better understand the impact of approaching accent modification in one way or another. The traditional method builds a foundational understanding of sound production, manner of articulation, and placement to ensure you have an understanding of the sounds involved. The other method is to choose functional words you use on a daily basis and targeting those specific sounds and words to ultimately alleviate frustrations in communication that currently impact your communicative success. • EP05 - The Big Picture: Understanding How to Think About Accents

    03/04/2019 Duration: 12min

Without an understanding of the big picture and how to view accent learning, learning an accent or even evaluating your own accent can be difficulty, at best. There are fundamental building blocks and prerequisites to understand how speech production and sound work before you can learn a new way of speaking. Many times, clients approach learning an accent with the individual sounds but don't have a greater appreciation for HOW they can change their mouth shape to alter their speech sounds. Without a strong understanding of the basic skills, consistent and reliable changes can be hard to master and further frustrate clients along their journey of self-improvement. If you missed the discussions on mouth anatomy and the international phonetic alphabet, check out my last two episodes. They are pretty content heavy but worth the listen! • EP03 - Mouth Anatomy

    22/03/2019 Duration: 30min

In this episode, I talk about the basic anatomy involved in making sound. Although the content is not specific to accent learning or English learning, it is an important fundamental aspect to learning any sound production in order to better understand WHAT is moving when you change sounds. If you don't have control of WHAT is moving, then issues regarding HOW and WHEN they need to move becomes harder. Check out my instagram for an accompanying image of the mouth anatomy. • EP02: Accentedness, Intelligibility and Ease of Understanding

    15/03/2019 Duration: 10min

Many times, clients will have a vague idea of what they want and what they expect from accent consultation services. They want to get better but better is such a vague concept and very subjective. There are 3 concepts that need to be discussed to better qualify and compartmentalize peoples' wants and desires: 1) Accentedness 2) Speech Intelligibility  3) Ease of Comprehension By better grasping how these are interrelated and prioritizing them, you can better understand and focus your efforts on what matters to you. It'll also re-frame what you want into a more understandable, realistic and measureable goal.
