Synopsis

FR NYC is working to archive the many sounds of New York City, large and small. It is far too easy to be caught up by the speed of New York and forget about all there is to appreciate surrounding us at any given moment. This project's goal is to remind us to step aside on occasion and center ourselves. Even the busiest of cities can seem incredibly calm from a distance.Contact: fieldrecordingsnyc@gmail.com

  • #16 Riddle Creek Trail, Yellowstone National Park | October 12th, 2018

    05/01/2019 Duration: 01h10min

Yellowstone completely blew my mind. I now, finally understand why folks talk about it so much. I’ve been to national parks before. Badlands being the most recent that I visited in the beginning of this same road trip, but Yellowstone is like 20 national parks in one. I had no idea the vast amount of space and diversity that I was to witness every day we spent there. You can literally spend the entire day driving through the park, finding new sights and landscapes that are completely different to what you witnessed the day or even hours before. Regrettably, this is the only soundscape I captured from my trip to Yellowstone, being such a multifarious subject, but it also happens to be one of my favorites I’ve captured thus far. Never before have I captured the sound of ‘space’ like this. You can really hear the distance that surrounds you there. The trail we hiked is riddled with Lodgepole Pine trees that tower over you. I love these trees because you can hear them creak as they gently sway in the wind. Sh

  • #15 Badlands (Interior), South Dakota, Cedar Pass Lodge | October 9th, 2018

    28/12/2018 Duration: 35min

I ventured on a trip with a couple buddies through the mid-west this past October. Specifically from two iconic national parks — Badlands in South Dakota to Yellowstone National Park. The Badlands were immediately an interesting sight to see as we drove in at dead of night. The layered rock formations suddenly surround you as you drive into the park, towering over you as if you’ve suddenly been cast as an extra in the 1960’s Star Trek series and you were beamed onto their extensive set for the season finale. It was rainy and cold while we were there, limiting my ability to record and leaving little wildlife to be seen outside of the fur covered Bison + Bighorn Sheep in the distance. Still you can hear the occasional bird chirping in the cold and it’s interesting to hear how humans’ creations — mainly cars driving in and out of the canyons to the various cabins and shops or folks packing up for their day hikes or next adventure echo off of its towering spires of rock, sand and dirt. The rainy weather only h

  • #14 Night in Rincón, Puerto Rico | May 29th, 2018

    15/06/2018 Duration: 04h07min

What could be better than the sounds of the ocean and nightfall at the same time? Not much, and that’s why you’ll hear some folks walking by the beach path for a night stroll or the cracking of wood being gathered for a nearby campfire. For the most part this recording is the sounds of the ocean, crickets and local birds chirping into the night as the sun sets, but around the one hour mark some folks show up for a campfire. I thought about editing them out to contain only the continuous ambient sounds of the night on the shore, but then I remembered the purpose of this project is to capture the sounds of the moment, as they were. Unedited. Not that it’s all that jarring or loud, our campfire friends show up briefly in the background and then seem to drift into the night. If you wanted, I think you could easily use this one to fall asleep to. As if you’re about to join them in conversation before drifting off with the sand beneath you. 7:25 - 11:32pm 78° and falling (Low of 75° / High of 84°) Clear Skies Win

  • #13 Cascada El Roble (Gozalandia) Waterfalls, San Sebastian, Puerto Rico | May 29th, 2018

    09/06/2018 Duration: 01h18min

Many of you probably thought this project was dead. Apologies about that. It's been a busy year or so that's kept me away from editing, but not away from the actual recording. I'll be digging through the files now to share some sounds from the past year of my travels. This is the first of probably three or four recordings I'll be sharing from my recent trip to Puerto Rico. if you're looking for an hour or so of heavy water sounds, this is likely for you, with the water rushing so aggressively down the water falls to the running stream it almost sounds like white noise after a few minutes. If it wasn't for the birds chirping and the distant sounds of locals and tourists taking advantage of the nearby rope swing

  • #12 183 Chauncey Street Backyard Rainstorm | March 13th, 2017

    23/05/2017 Duration: 06h44min

This is by far my longest recording yet. If you're looking for some background noise for your full night's sleep, this will come awfully close clocking in just under seven hours, so long as you don't mind the occasional siren in the distance. We had rain all day today. Something I've been wanting to capture in the city for a while. Hope it brings you some peace. 11:15am - 6:00pm 52° (Low of 46° / High of 54°) Light Rain Chance of Precipitation: 100% Wind: 11mph NE Humidity: 89% UV Index: 0

  • #9 Overlooking Tamarama Beach, Bondi, Sydney, AU | October 11th, 2016

    04/03/2017 Duration: 01h41min

I was lucky enough to spend almost three weeks last October back in Australia. Something I thought might not ever happen again since my semester abroad in 2007. This recording comes from outside the building we stayed in overlooking the beautiful Tamarama Beach, which neighbors the well-known Bondi Beach outside of Sydney. It was a particularly windy, but beautiful day that I was able to capture without too much disturbance from the wind gusts. This building it literally on the edge of a cliff looking down over Tamarama beach, which is likely a mile to mile and a half away. Given the distance, you can hear the beach at times in the distance, but more prominent will be the local birds and wildlife amongst the tropical trees and shrubbery as well as the local traffic and planes flying overhead in and out of Sydney. 9:12am - 11:00am 57° and rising (Low of 52° / High of 65°) Clear Skies Chance of Precipitation: 0% Wind: 19mph NW Humidity: 52% UV Index: 2

  • #8 Bull Hill (Mt. Taurus) Cold Springs, NY | February 18th 2017

    22/02/2017 Duration: 03h17min

Got a doozy for y’all this week. Went for a nice 3 hour hike in Cold Spring NY (Mt. Taurus). Previously, I’ve done most of my recording on my Roland R-26, which generally cuts our after I leave it much beyond the hour mark. This recording (captured on my Zoom H4n) was still recording when I returned over 3 hours later. My goal with this project was to never capture much less than hour-long sessions. If I do, it doesn’t get released, and that’s because I don’t think shorter sessions properly capture a space / time. This however, could revolutionize things a bit. Perhaps I can work my way up to 8 hour sessions to help those of you keen to find some sounds to sleep to. At any rate *end rant*. February 18th was our first glimpse at spring-to-come in 2017, with temperatures in the low 60s and so the trails were fairly packed. Recorder was set up not far off the beaten path, in fairly close proximity to the closest road and train tracks. You’ll hear a nice mix of the local wildlife, leaves rustling, a near-const

  • #7 Nuclear Lake (Hudson Valley Appalachian Trail) | August 27th, 2016

    24/09/2016 Duration: 01h14min

Despite its name, Nuclear Lake has the reputation of being one of the most beautiful lakes on the Appalachian Trail. Nestled in the heart of Hudson Valley. Nuclear Lake gets it’s name from a chemical explosion that blew out two windows in the experimental nuclear research lab that used to sit on the shore of the lake in 1972. Blasting an unspecified amount of bomb-grade plutonium across the lake and surrounding woods. This didn’t stop us from going for a swim in midst of our 12-mile hike that day. My recorder was left at the bank of the lake on a fairly breezy day — leaving us with the sounds of the wind, local insects buzzing by, birds, along with the occasional creature hopping in the water. Also a steady amount of planes flying overhead and the occasional voices of hikers strolling by or swimming in the distance. Given it was a fairly breezy day, I had to nix my XY mic recordings and rely solely on the omni mic’s recordings which captured the breeze nicely without too much wind distortion. Oh, and I made
