Donna Godlove
16/10/2024 Duration: 27minDonna spent most of her life as a self-taught artist focused on graphite and acrylic. While she “dabbled” and remained drawn to art, she all but put away the easel to raise a family, attend college, and foster a career. Once retired from banking, she started her artistic work anew. Her first move, she found a good instructor and mentor. Secondly, she picked up pastels, an entirely new medium for her. The more she explored what these fabulous little sticks of pigment could do, the more she pushed herself into unknown territory. When asked “Why pastels?” she stated, “I don’t do anything by half. Finding a mentor that is both a great guide and fierce friend was paramount. She sparked a passion in me. I discovered what I seldom found in the acrylics. It’s the softness, the life, and the way the light just bounces off of the pieces. He studied at the “University of Vienna” and the “Vienna Academy of Fine Arts” where he graduated in 1966 winning the two highest art awards. He partially restored the Neo-Gothic Votive Church in Vienna before his interest in Byzantine art took him to Greece and Turkey where he spent 30 years painting and sculpting as well as capturing the ancient ruins, myths, and religious icons. He arrived in Istanbul in 1966 having received an Austrian-Turkish Cultural Exchange Grant. His earliest One Man Shows were at the Istanbul City Gallery, the State Museum for Painting and Sculpture, the American Robert College and American Cultural Institute. She appreciates the focus and presence required to paint on site and have worked to bring the liveliness of plein air to her studio work. Penny is a fine arts photographer, playwright (directed and produced Off-Broadway), and theatre director (founded Maryland Theatre Arts Company).
