While it was not in incredibly convincing fashion, the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds twice over the weekend. A series win is a series win, but the series against the Pirates needs to be much more convincing. St. Louis can take advantage of a Milwaukee off day Monday and the fact that the Brewers play the Mets this week by beating the Pirates.WANT MORE DAILY ST. There were a few positives for the St. Louis Cardinals this week (Dakota Hudson, Tyler O'Neill, Miles Mikolas) despite getting swept by the Tampa Bay Rays. That said, obviously it was a net negative going 0-3 at the Trop. St. Louis now must wipe its memory and try to take advantage of playing a bad Reds team at home for three games. Andre Pallante, Adam Wainwright and Hudson will start for the Cardinals this weekend, which is a positive for this team that is 0.5 games back of the first place Milwaukee Brewers.WANT MORE DAILY ST. While long term confidence in this team is there, the short term raises some questions. With the team still waiting on starters to return, the pitching depth is being pushed to its brink. Jack Flaherty needs to be an ace when he returns to the rotation. Also, it's nice to see Tyler O'Neill producing because the Cardinals need him to be an anchor in this lineup.WANT MORE DAILY ST. Dakota Hudson turned in his second consecutive dominant start last night, showing once again the type of starter he can be. Hudson's seven strong innings should've been enough for the win, but the Cardinal offense was stymied by the Rays' pitching staff. St. Louis has been able to piece together innings so far this season, but we are starting to see the depth being pushed to the edge. The reliable bullpen arms are being forced to make starts because of injuries to the rotation. Can this team continue to win while they wait for Flaherty + Matz to return? The St. Louis Cardinals took three out of five against the Chicago Cubs this weekend and many different areas shined. Brendan Donovan showed off his defensive prowess as well as his clutch bat, Nolan Gorman showcased his power and the whole Cardinal pitching staff showed how deep they really are. Adam Wainwright and Genesis Cabrera dominated the Cubs on Sunday, Zach Thompson was impressive in his MLB debut Friday, and Ryan Helsley and Giovanny Gallegos both impressed on Saturday. The St. Louis Cardinals completed the sweep of the San Diego Padres yesterday behind a brilliant pitching performance from Dakota Hudson and a 3-hit, 3-rbi day from Nolan Arenado. Hudson has struggled this season, but his start yesterday showed that he still can have upside as a big league starter. Packy Naughton, Andre Pallante and Adam Wainwright have all led the charge in the first two games between the St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Padres. Similar to last year's team, when you pitch, you win! Outside of a Giovanny Gallegos bad outing and Ryan Helsley giving up his first earned run, the bullpen has also been solid in the first two games. The St. Louis Cardinals lost 4-3 to the Milwaukee Brewers tonight, and it was in large part due to the team not executing the little things. They gave the Brewers a few extra outs early that led to some runs, plus the offense stranded 11 runners on base and hit 1-6 with RISP. While the offense did prove Josh Hader is human, they were unable to score any runs off of him in the 9th. Jordan Hicks was unable to impress in his first start without a short pitchbout, and it was his second consecutive unimpressive. Paul Goldschmidt's grand slam in the 10th inning gave the Cardinals their most dramatic win of the season. Despite striking out three times, Goldy found a way to come through. It's a sign of the whole offense starting to click on a more consistent level over the last week. With the Cardinals playing the Pirates, it was hard to tell the actual success vs just playing the Pirates. The St. Louis Cardinals dominated in just about every fashion in their road sweep of the Pirates this weekend. Adam Wainwright was great on Friday, the bullpen (namely Giovanny Gallegos, Drew VerHagen and Ryan Helsley), was phenomenal Saturday, Angel Rondón was a lifesaver Sunday and the offense came alive Sunday afternoon. This was a huge gain of momentum ahead of a very difficult schedule for the St. Louis Cardinals as they face three playoff-caliber teams with deep October runs in mind. The St. Louis Cardinals were able to find a way to earn a split in today's doubleheader with the New York Mets despite some sluggish offensive performances. In game one, the Cardinals struck out 13 times and in game two St. Louis went 3-13 with runners in scoring position. Some positives include the bullpen and Miles Mikolas + Steven Matz both turning in above average starts.
