What's Cookin' - Traditional Comfort Foods and Ironclad Chefs!
22/02/2012These foods stand the test of time and tug on our heartstrings. Why do you like grandma's apple pie so much? On Wednesday's HearSay, our favorite foodie Patrick Evans-Hylton joins us to talk about traditional comfort foods and more. We'll learn about the psychological and physiological roles these foods play in our lives and talk with a "food psychiatrist." Also on the broadcast, we'll talk about recipes from the past that we enjoy today. We'll go back in time for a conversation with this year's "Ironclad Chefs." From hardtack to battersea beef and grog, once again these chefs will battle it out in a cooking competition as part of the Mariners' Museum's 150th Anniversary observance of the Battle of Hampton Roads.

14/02/2012Segment A: A Nation of Renters? Housing trends show many Americans either delaying buying a house until the market stabilizes, or opting out as they recover from previous housing misadventures. The result is a red-hot rental market. On today's broadcast, Cathy talks with experts about this trend in the Hampton Roads area and what new federal programs could mean for would-be home owners. Segment B: Challenges in Condominium Communities The decline of the housing market hit many Condo owners especially hard. Unable to sell their properties, they leased them, which in turn caused condo sales to plummet even further. In some cases, condo regulations now prohibit owners from even attempting to sell their homes. We'll examine these issues and learn what help is available for Condo owners.

07/02/2012Segment A: Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother On the first half of our program, Cathy's joined by Yale law professor and author Amy Chua, whose parenting memoir, "Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother," was described by the Washington Post as "the single cultural moment of 2011." We'll talk with Chua about her parenting philosophy and how to survive a media maelstrom. Segment B: Taking Back Childhood The average American child spends 66% more time watching television than attending school - and the images that they are digesting are often age-inappropriate. On the second half of our program, we'll talk with the author of "Taking Back Childhood" about how parents can best navigate the social currents of our media-saturated environment.

Live from Afghanistan: Ambassador Ryan Crocker
06/02/2012American forces will cede the lead role in combat operations in Afghanistan next year, but will keep fighting alongside Afghan troops, according to U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. U.S. troops would largely shift to a train-and-assist role as Afghan forces take responsibility for security before an end-2014 deadline for full Afghan control. U.S. Ambassador for Afghanistan, Ryan Crocker, will join HearSay host Cathy Lewis, live from the U.S. Embassy in Kabul to talk about the latest as well as his upcoming visit to Hampton Roads this week.
