  • Becoming Cousteau Director Liz Garbus

    22/10/2021 Duration: 15min

Send us a textWe have been big fans of Liz Garbus for a long time, and we were lucky enough to have her on our show at Sundance 2020 for her narrative film, Lost Girls. This time, she's back with a portrayal of arguably one of the most influential environmental leaders in our history, Jacques Cousteau. Her film, Becoming Cousteau, documents how he first fell in love with the sea (spoiler alert: it was all because of an accident), how he turned from explorer to activist, his complicated family life, and the mistakes he made along the way to greatness. She gets into the many years it took to gain access (and go through) his archival footage, the importance of sharing his story for future generations, and her insight on being a woman in a male dominated field (and a very successful one, at that). You can find Becoming Cousteau at a theater near you! Thanks for listening and for your support! • Basic Bitching - Leaky Leftovers, Horrible Homilies, and My Name is Pauli Murray

    06/10/2021 Duration: 41min

Send us a textWe're basic bitching about some important life lessons after Ange attempts to go to church, and Producer Char brings Prime Rib leftovers on a plane. And then we cap off the episode with an interview from Sundance 2021 with two of our favorite guests, director duo extraordinaire Betsy West and Julie Cohen. Their documentary, My Name is Pauli Murray, is available to stream on Amazon, and to watch in select theaters near you. This is one of our favorite documentaries of the year about a woman who was born in 1910, and has been a trailblazer for everything we're still fighting for today, including women's rights, the LGBTQ community, and Black Lives Matter. 01/10/2021 Duration: 28min

Send us a textLast month Erin sat down with a few of her favorite contestants from Top Chef season 18 at the brand new Moxy Oakland Downtown! Chef Maria Mazon, Chef Dawn Burrell, and Chef Nelson German couldn't have been any nicer and honest about the latest season that was shot during the height of the pandemic in Portland, Oregon. We talk about the restrictions and testing they all had to go through while filming the show, how tight the chefs were through it all, how the show has impacted their individual lives, and what they see in their culinary futures. Let us tell you, it was a joy to speak with a panel of chefs of color that are changing the culinary industry. Please support them and the many that are out there on a day-to-day basis feeding us and sharing their culture.  A big thank you to Nelson, Maria, and Dawn for their time. • Blue Bayou Director Justin Chon

    24/09/2021 Duration: 15min

Send us a textWe are grateful to welcome back to the show, director Justin Chon to talk about his latest film Blue Bayou. The last time we talked with Justin, was back at the Sundance Film Festival in 2019 when he screened the sister/brother drama Ms. Purple. Blue Bayou takes on the conversations around immigration, adoption, police brutality, racism, facing death and interracial marriage - all set in the beautiful landscape of one of our favorite places, New Orleans. Justin and Erin talk about the heavy topics of this film as well as why he landed on using New Orleans as the backdrop to the story, adoption as a capitalistic transaction, why he prefers the Linda Ronstadt version of Blue Bayou , and more. Blue Bayou  is out now in a theater near you. We hope that you will go out and support Korean American independent film and watch Justin's previous work - Gook  and Ms. Purple. Send us a textLisa Yadao is a badass producer/director/screenwriter that we first met at a Center for Asian American Media event in 2018. The series "profiles WOC chefs who use food as a conduit for cultural awareness and as a means of perpetuating their cultural traditions". And the first episode highlights Yana Gilbuena, a traveling Filipino chef bringing Kamayan food to the people, one state at a time. We get into Lisa's company, Paper Tongue Productions, how they chose which chefs to highlight, the importance of the series being 100% female made and majority BIPOC, the awesome perks on their GoFundMe campaign, and the perks of being Filipino.
