Elly Henes On Taking Big Risks To Belong And Race Among The Best Runners In America – Just Ran 30:48 For 10,000m (No. 6 All-Time U.S.)
03/04/2023 Duration: 58min"I think a lot of my running career has been running within my comfort zone...Among the lessons learned last year was that there are going to be a lot of times when we're not in control and when I'm around people who can just drop me. I just want to be able to go into those high-level meets and know that I belong there. (Millrose) gave me confidence for sure. I wouldn't say it was a bad day or a bad race by any means. I think executed the plan, I put myself in there and I just want to do that more often because I want it to stick." Elly Henes is a professional runner for Adidas who trains in Flagstaff, Arizona under coach Mike Smith. She was a star at NC State, where she won the NCAA 5000m title in 2021. It was a beautiful moment since the victory came 30 years after her mother and coach Laurie Henes won the same title for the same school. Last year was a breakout year for Elly as a pro, which was capped by a 14:52 personal best for 5000m. She’s carried that momentum into 2023 and just r

Hannah Borenstein On Sharing The Untold Stories Of Ethiopian Runners
06/03/2023 Duration: 01h33min"At the end of those two months, I interviewed (two Ethiopian female runners) each of them for an hour and a half and hired a translator. What came out of those interviews was that this was a richly complicated and complex world that I knew very little about and I had barely scratched the surface. They were talking about the relationships with their family members because I had assumed – as a lot of people do – Ethiopia has this rich history of running, therefore, it must be such a prideful thing. It actually turned out that they all said that all their family members disapproved of what they were doing. There were all these things that came up that surprised me. As I later came to learn in anthropology in grad school, you should always follow and ask questions about the things that surprise you because those are the most interesting things." Hannah Borenstein is a good friend of mine who I've had the pleasure of getting to know as a member of The Magic Boost program that I help direct. She is an anthropologi

Ken Rideout On Battling Tough Circumstances, Overcoming Addiction To Become A Top Masters Marathoner
28/02/2023 Duration: 01h09minMy guest for this episode is Ken Rideout, one of the world's fastest marathoners over the age of 50. Ken's impressive physique and relentless mindset make him stand out in the marathon world. His story is one of battling tough circumstances and overcoming addiction to become a top master athlete. He was just featured in the Wall Street Journal last week and was a hit guest on the Rich Roll Podcast last year. Growing up in a troubled home in a tough suburb of Boston, Ken watched his stepfather and brother go to prison. As a teen, he worked as a prison guard and vowed he wouldn't end up behind bars. However, he struggled with imposter syndrome in his finance career and turned to opioids for a time. Eventually, he turned to running as a way to cope and has become hooked on the sport. Ken's training routine is unorthodox – you can easily see for yourself on his Strava page. His dedication to his craft has paid off, as he has won the 50-and-over division at two of the six Abbott World Marathon Majors and hop

Michael Norman On Overcoming Olympic Disappointment To Become 400m World Champion
21/02/2023 Duration: 51minMichael Norman is the world champion at 400 meters and he just made headlines last week as he told NBC that in 2023, he will be focusing on the 100 meters. As the defending gold medalist, he’s got his spot secured for the World Championships in Budapest so I am here for his experiment. He’s run 9.86 for 100 meters, 19.70 for 200 meters and his 43.45 personal best for 400m makes him the fourth-fastest man in history. He is just 25 years old so there is tons of potential to be excited about. In this episode, I appreciated his honesty in talking about the disappointment of finishing 5th at the Tokyo Olympics, how he overcame that to win gold last year and what it’s going to take to get even faster and stay on top. Mike is a big Formula1 fan so we also had some fun talking about that, why I need him to start a podcast with Rai Benjamin and much more. From all these obstacles that I've had, I've never really seen it as an opportunity to quit this thing. A lot of people tell me, 'You've been through so much. Why don't you just hang it up? High School Senior Rocky Hansen On The Brink Of Breaking Four Minutes For The Mile
08/02/2023 Duration: 35min"Racing has always been a fun part of running for me. Focusing on that in these recent years of my running career has definitely helped." I’ve handed off the keys to the CITIUS MAG Podcast for this episode to our newest contributor Gary Martin. If you remember, last year he broke four minutes for the mile as a senior in high school. Now, he’s a freshman at the University of Virginia and doing fantastic work. We wanted to keep following along in his career so he’ll be contributing across podcasts, videos, articles and social media. In this episode, he hosts a chat with Christ School senior Rocky Hansen of North Carolina. He has a personal best of 4:00.76 for the mile and just won the boys' mile race at The New Balance Indoor Grand Prix. He’s entered in the B-section of the mile for the Millrose Games, where he’ll have another shot at sub-4. He’s committed to Wake Forest for next year. I thought this was a cool conversation from one former high school star to the next about how to handle the pressure that
