In this episode Dr. Dave Evans from The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center joined us to talk about the prehospital use of backboards. This August, the Central Ohio Trauma System released guidelines addressing proper spine precautions.  The recommendation from this document is that backboards should be "used judiciously and are recommended only for extrication purposes." Dr. Evans explains that there is no evidence based literature that would support the use of backboards.  In fact, the use of backboards can be detrimental to your patient.  Please keep in mind that we are only talking about backboards.  Cervical collars are still important and are required to properly care for patients that have sustained a potential cervical spine injury.   Central Ohio Trauma System Spine Precaution Guidelines for Pre-Hospital Providers  Thank you for listening and have a Merry Christmas!!!!

Rod Crane joined us to announce some bittersweet news.  We discussed some of the changes that he has seen take place in the healthcare and areomedical fields.  He also talked about where he believes these fields will go in the future and some of the challenges that might be faced.  Rod also had a message for those who work in healthcare, aeromedicine, and public safety. MedFlight's Exposure Control Liason, Karen Swecker, joined us on the show to talk about the latest information available on the Ebola virus. We discussed the current recomendations from the CDC on BSI precautions, how to disinfect, and what symptoms you should watch out for.  We also talked about the Enterovirus (EV-D86) and what to watch out for. Liz Reeves and Anthony Fleming with Vanderbilt LifeFlight stopped by our booth at AMTC 2014.  They talked about the 30 year anniversary of their program as well as available employment opportunities with Vanderbilt.

Jordan Owen with Haiti Air Ambulance stopped by our booth at AMTC 2014.  Jordan is the Operations Manager as well as a flight paramedic for the program.  We discussed the how Haiti Air was started and what the future holds for the program.   Also we discussed the volunteer opportunities available for flight crew members that are a part of a CAMTS accredited program.  This opportunity allows current clinicians to fly with Haiti Air providing patient care for 7 days.  If you are interested please contact Jordan at jordan@haitiairambulance.org.

In Episode 4 we discussed how TXA is used in the military and how is was introduced to EMS.  We also discussed the MATTERs Trial and the Crash 2 Study.   For this episode Dr. Evans joined us at MedFlight for a company inservice.  He spoke about the pharmacology of TXA as well as evidence based practice.   If you have never heard of TXA, it may be helpful to go back and listen to MedFlight Radio Episode 4 and then listen to this episode.
