Emily Byrd on Communicating the Trends of the Plant-Based Food Revolution
30/03/2017 Duration: 01h15minThis week we talk with Emily Byrd, the Senior Communications Specialist at the Good Food Institute, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to changing the world through food. If you listened to episode 31 of the podcast with Liz Specht, Emily's colleague, then you probably know a thing or two about GFI. But basically, they help to support companies in the blossoming plant-based food tech scene with science, legal, and business expertise with a team of the best of the best - what I call the Avengers of the plant-based world. And Emily's job is communicating the trends, science, and news of this industry while dismantling the misconceptions of plant-based living. Emily's background is in journalism from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and she grew up witnessing firsthand the environmental destruction and animal suffering that comes from hog farming in that part of the world. This led her down a path of fascination with healthy living and reporting on the issues of food and health. She then

Kip Andersen & Keegan Kuhn on What The Health is Wrong With Our Food System?
16/03/2017 Duration: 01h09minAfter their smashing success with the widely popular documentary, Cowspiracy, Kip and Keegan are back with a new film called What The Health. What The Health is essentially focused on uncovering the corruption and backwards policies that make up our current healthcare paradigm, including how its designed to treat disease symptoms rather than focus on prevention, work in the favor of industry, and how organizations like the American Heart Association are in the back pocket of animal agriculture industries. This dynamic duo - Keegan the filmmaker and Kip the star - have created these two films in an effort to open the public's eyes regarding how and where our food comes from, and the startling implications that entails. We sat down in Berkeley, California for a fantastic conversation, covering: Kip and Keegan's background and how they developed a love for filmmaking and plant-based living Update on Cowspiracy and their experience of going on Joe Rogan's podcast All things What The Health - favorite momen

17/02/2017 Duration: 01h14minHere in the United States, we generally live in a world of convenience, instant gratification, and comfort. But is that always the best? We talk about how society pulls us to stay within the safety of the comfort zone, why we feel it's beneficial to step outside of it, and some of our own personal stories that have led us to these conclusions. We urge you to consider ways to get uncomfortable, as we are both strong believers that true growth and learning occurs when you dance on that line between comfort and discomfort. Enjoy the episode, and don't forget to Go eat some plants, and do epic shit. -Jackson and Aaron Want to support the show and what TFF is doing? The Perfect Day Exercise
02/02/2017 Duration: 01h04minImagine what your most ideal, perfect day would look like. There are zero limitations, money is not an issue, and you have all the time in the world. Now write that down in excruciating detail from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to bed. Hang it up somewhere where you can see it every day. Then ask yourself how you can make decisions or shift your habits to reflect moving towards that perfect day. This exercise is extremely helpful in figuring out exactly what you want, and even just thinking about it regularly helps to make it a reality. Now, you don't have to know exactly what your perfect day looks like. It's a process, an evolution. Do it a couple times a year and see how it changes and how much you've evolved alongside it. Today on the podcast, we walk you through our perfect day exercises. Then we talk about them and the steps we're taking to get closer to those dreams. But the point of the episode is to ignite YOU to go through this exercise and bring more purpose into your life. So once t

Lachlan and Gus Morton on Transcending Cycling Through the Adventure of Thereabouts
26/01/2017 Duration: 01h06minLachlan and Gus Morton are just absolute legends in the world of cycling. Not simply because of their racing palmares, or the fact that Lachlan is one of the most gifted climbers in the world right now. No, what's so intriguing and inspiring about these two brothers is their philosophy towards cycling. On one hand, they are both professional bike riders, racing at the highest level of the sport. And on the other side, they ride around in flannel shirts and bucket hats through the Outback, or from Boulder to Moab. Their mindset is one of adventure, of passion, and of not taking yourself too seriously. That's why they created their documentary film series, Thereabouts. Thereabouts is about getting out of your comfort zone via the bicycle as the vehicle. Riding insane terrain and distances, while seeking adventure and camaraderie, and meeting with the locals. First, a little background. Lachlan and Gus are two brothers from Australia, who grew up and rose quickly through the sport of cycling after moving to

What’s the Deal With Carbs?
12/01/2017 Duration: 01h34minThe king of macronutrients. The most controversial word in all of nutrition. Builder of cities, destroyer of empires. Carbohydrates. In the fourth installment of our What's the Deal series, we go hard and deep on all things carbs. With so much information and misinformation out there, we did what we do best and jumped on the science, the cold hard evidence, first defining this nutrient and its function and then address some of the major claims about carbohydrates such as: carbohydrates make you fat carbs cause inflammation carbs from fruit are the same as table sugar high-carb diets cause diabetes and cancer and more! We also discuss the role of carbohydrates for athletes, and then a more philosophical look at applying these concepts through a macro lens and why we should stop talking about carbs and protein and diet so extensively. Grab a notebook, take a glucose break, kick back and relax, and enjoy the show! Go eat some plants! -Jackson and Aaron Thank you thank you thank you to everyone w

Harrison Tucker on Plant Powered Long Distance Skateboarding
15/12/2016 Duration: 01h24minUltra-Endurance Long Distance Skateboarding. Yep. I hadn’t heard of it either. This small but blossoming sport - called ‘Long Distance Pushing’ - is one of the craziest things I’ve ever heard of, in such a cool way. This week’s guest specializes in the 24-hour race, completing upwards of 200 miles. Harrison is a professional athlete through and through, following a fully structured and periodized training program, dialing in his nutrition to maximize performance, and is fully sponsored. And to top it off, he just turned 17. Crazy right? Harrison is also completely plant-based, fueling his training and racing on a mostly raw vegan diet. We met up in Boulder while he was out here looking at colleges, and I immediately knew I wanted to do a podcast with him, so he called in from his home city of NYC. In the conversation we talk about: what the sport of Long Distance Pushing is all about how he got into this crazy event what’s involved in his training how he shifted towards a plant-based diet and how tha

How to Stay Happy and Healthy During the Holidays
08/12/2016 Duration: 01h04minIt's the most wonderful time of the year: in-laws, cookies, and the inevitable struggle to maintain your healthy routine. It doesn't have to be this way though. The holidays for some are an opportunity to spend time with family, relieve a bit of stress, and let go of being strict with your ideal lifestyle. For others, they are a chance to focus and double down on getting their ass into gear, eating healthy, holding themselves to a higher standard so that they don't spiral down the path of poor choices. For vegans, the holidays can be intimidating, especially those new to the plant-based lifestyle. From awkward family dinners where the weird uncle always asks about your protein and calcium to holiday parties where the only thing for you to eat is some lettuce and a few cashews. Nobody like that. So, we have a conversation offering up some tips about how to stay on track during the holiday season and not lose your sanity. We talk: How to approach the holidays depending on where you are in your health goals

Professional Triathlete Antoine Desroches on Fueling with Plants and Enjoying the Training Process
01/12/2016 Duration: 57minYou can't be a professional athlete and eat a vegan diet, right? You'd be totally deficient in the important nutrients like protein and iron. Well, actually, you can not only thrive as an athlete, but also live in alignment of your morals and ethics, such as compassion towards animals and a focus on environmental sustainability. Today's guest to Thought For Food is doing exactly this. Antoine Jolicoeur Desroches is a professional triathlete hailing from Quebec, Canada. He specializes in 70.3 or Half-Ironman distance races, and turned professional last year. Antoine has been a big supporter of TFF from the beginning, and he is completely aligned with the TFF ethos of looking at lifestyle from a holistic and integrative approach. Enjoying the training process. Living in alignment with your morals. Fueling with an evidence-based, compassionate diet. And most important of all: having fun. We nerd out on all things plant-based athlete including: Antoine's athletic background and what led him to triathlon Dif

Dylan Steeples on Mindful Ultrarunning, Plant Power Podcasting, and Natural Hygiene
24/11/2016 Duration: 01h12minHappy Thanksgiving! Super excited to share with you a really fun, lighthearted, and different conversation with you guys this week. My friend Dylan Steeples, a plant-powered ultrarunner, new podcast host, and believer in not taking showers, is getting serious about making an impact in the plant-based/vegan space. We connected through the power of social media, which is just super cool, because he lives in New Zealand! I'm definitely planning on going out and visiting him soon. I just felt very compelled to help Dylan out with getting some more listeners to his podcast, the Plant Power Podcast, which you should definitely check out. It's similar to TFF in that he talks about plant-based nutrition, health, exercise, and he also gets into spirituality a bit more than we do. But in our conversation today, we talk about: how he got started on a plant-based diet his shift into ultrarunning how he approaches training for running mindfully what his experience has been with his podcast and where he wants to g

The Struggles of the Outgoing Introvert
17/11/2016 Duration: 01h51sThis week on the show, we're doing something a little different. On one of the recent YouTube VLOGs, Jackson discussed how he is an outgoing introvert, a type of middle ground between extrovert and introvert. He had just discovered it after Aaron explained it to him, and the two of us decided it would be an interesting episode to discuss what it's like to be an outgoing introvert. We found an interesting blog post describing the top 8 ways you'll know if you're an outgoing introvert and went through each, discussing our own experiences for each. We think a lot of our listeners can relate to what this topic, and it turned into a full on therapy session for the two of us. We talk about things like: being selectively social rather than anti-social hating traditional systems how our energy levels depend on the environment how we can be the life of the party, once we warm up and more! It's a hilarious and fun conversation that we hope you enjoy. If you can relate at all to what we talk about in the ep
