  • Josie talks Coronavirus

    04/05/2020 Duration: 43min

Josie is the daughter of one of my closest friends. She was terrified of me the first few years of her life, and it destroyed my heart. Then one day she decided I was okay. So now she's nine, and one of my favorite kids, along with her little sister Jessie. Using three-way calling, Josie and I called a few people we know to ask them about their Covid-19 experiences. This was recorded in April 2020, at hopefully the height of the pandemic and physical distancing. Enjoy the conversations, and a very special thank you to Josie, her mom Amy, Simon and his mom Hilary, Claire and her mom Jill, Zoe and her mom Amy, and Kyle and his wife Laura and dog Taylor. My life is richer with all of you in it! Uppity Women is hosted by Stephanie Harris, founder of Women Lead Arkansas, a non-partisan nonprofit whose mission is to empower women and girls to engage in politics, policy, and leadership. This podcast is meant to showcase women (and men!) doing cool things; be a place for hard conversations we need to have before we c

  • The Storybook Project, with Denise Chai and Gem Jones

    23/03/2020 Duration: 56min

Denise Chai is the outreach coordinator for The Storybook Project of Arkansas. From the website: “Our motto was - and is - ‘keeping families connected through reading,’ ” said project founder Pat Oplinger of Cherokee Village. She started Storybook in 1997 with a few other volunteers from a local church. The original purpose, she said, “was to raise the literacy level of both inmates and their children, thus raising education and self confidence levels and family unity.” Gem (Undrea) Jones spent about two decades in prison, and she talks to us a little about what got her there, but mostly about what the Storybook Project meant to her during those years and beyond. Also, check out her Facebook page: What About Us? She gives voice to the voiceless. • Susan Curtis--Girl Attorney

    20/01/2020 Duration: 01h05min

Susan Curtis is an attorney in Oklahoma who is the founder of Girl Attorney, LLC. Each state has its own Girl Attorney Facebook page, where we can discuss legal questions, procedure, local court practices, good and bad experiences in the legal field, and anything else we want. It's been a great resource for me, and I have been impressed that we keep the posts almost entirely law-related. Girls just wanna be professional! Susan also puts on GALCON, a national leadership conference for women attorneys. Check it out in the links below. • Tharwat Lovett, MAP, Emotional and Psychological Wellness Coach

    18/11/2019 Duration: 01h07min

What a conversation! I just love learning new things, especially about humans. SCIENCE! Tharwat is a wellness coach who digs into what's going on in our brains and bodies to figure out the roots of our problems, hangups, insecurities, anger, whatever we've got going on. I have always been interested in the why of everything. Why do I feel stuck professionally and in personal relationships? What can I do about it? We barely scratched the surface in this conversation, so I look forward to many more. Check out the links below for some of the things we mention. • Grant Tennille-Economic Development

    04/11/2019 Duration: 01h35min

I needed hours to discuss with Grant Tennille all the things on my mind related to economic development. As the former director of the Arkansas Economic Development Commission, he has some things to say, too. We focused a lot on Little Rock. How fantastic it is and what needs improvement. There's a lot of both!   Uppity Women is hosted by Stephanie Harris, founder of Women Lead Arkansas, a non-partisan nonprofit whose mission is to empower women and girls to engage in politics, policy, and leadership. • Brian Parker, Synthesis Guide, Medium, Healer, Teacher

    28/10/2019 Duration: 01h29min

I truly don't remember what inspired me to find Brian, but it was a combination of things, including a conversation with a friend about mediums. So I went to the Murderino Paranormal Society Facebook page and asked about mediums. The responses were plentiful, but I settled on Brian Parker. I enjoyed our conversation, and I felt very comfortable talking to him. Have I moved from curious skeptic to believer? Not really, but I'm always open to the idea of there being things we don't yet understand. I am also open to the idea that our brains are wondrous things that help us believe the unbelievable. Because THAT'S WHAT WE DO. Alese and I met at Blue Sail Coffee at the Tech Park in Little Rock. There's a lot of background noise. Sorry. But you'll get used to it. This episode may be a little much for anyone not interested or somewhat well-versed in Startup World. But midway or so, we start to talk about women in this milieu and the challenges we face--from funding, to getting appropriate attention for our ideas, to creating a more equitable ecosystem.  I hope you enjoy. #UppityWomenUnite Uppity Women is hosted by Stephanie Harris, founder of Women Lead Arkansas, a non-partisan nonprofit whose mission is to empower women and girls to engage in politics, policy, and leadership.
