Della Volpe now coaches girls' basketball in Ansonia, and his family is full of youth coaches, including his father, former Ansonia Mayor James Della Volpe. Della Volpe played basketball at Ansonia High School. He played for three years on the football team as well for three of his four years in high school. He also played a ton of golf growing up in Ansonia because his dad and the late Jack Hunt ran a driving range at one point (where the BJ's Wholesale now stands on Division Street in Derby).
