    A Special Yule tide episode, full of stories and recipes for the holiday.The story of how Yule got its name, is called The First Song, and is a traditional story from Northern Europe. I've been telling this story to my children for many years, and have changed and added to it over time, as we do with all folk tales. The poem Welcome Yule is by Susan Cooper. A Visit to Mother Hulda was a story I originally found many years ago in Circle Round by Starhawk, Diane Baker and Anne Hill as "A Visit to Mother Winter." Over the years, I have changed and adapted the story to fit with our family practices and beliefs. The version told here is my own. Twas the Night before Yuletide is a poem that circulated the interwebs long ago in the time of BBSes. I have adapted the poem and retold it to my own family over the years.   • Episode 20: The Singing Bone

    This faery tale has been told again and again and has many variations the world over. I found versions from England, Turkey, Russian. Pakistan, Germany, and India, just to name a few. The version I am telling here is from the traditional English tale associated with Binnorie. You will probably recognize the elements of the story, as this version has been retold by Lorenna McKennit in her song The Bonny Swans, and by Omnia in their song Harp of Death.     Our even numbered episodes are all about folk and fairy tales. This is The Tale of Thorstein from Iceland. I do not know when it is from. It has been difficult to find information on this one. This tale may take inspiration from the Vatnsdaela saga, in which a young Thorstein is shamed by his father to into doing an epic deed. And so he hides in a giants house and then kills the giant. But that is just my guess! It may have no relation except for those surface commonalities, that can be found in other stories of Iceland, and it just happened to be a Thorstein in there.
