What next for the Lebanese Revolution?
17/08/2020 Duration: 35minThe Lebanese masses are moving once again. In the wake of the August 4th Beirut blast which devastated much of the city, the masses have taken to the streets to hold those responsible to account. Rightfully, they have aimed their anger at the corrupt government of Lebanon which caused the blast through their neglect and corruption. In the wake of this powerful movement, the government has resigned for the second time in less than a year. This is a great achievement, but the revolution must go further and take power into its own hands. What next for the Lebanese masses? How can the workers of Lebanon take power, and spread the revolution across the middle east? Adam Zeineddine from Fightback, the Canadian section of the IMT, explores these questions.

In our latest episode, Alan discusses how, with the Parliamentarians in a favourable position at the outbreak of the Civil War, thousands of men enlisted to fight on their side. The Royalists, relying on the less economically developed regions, were dependent on superior cavalry and a stubborn unwillingness to surrender. The stage was set for a colossal engagement between the two sides, which put a stop to any hope of compromise. The early years of the Communist Party
31/07/2020 Duration: 55minIn this talk from Revolution Festival 2019, Ben Gliniecki - writer for Socialist Appeal - discusses the beginnings of the Communist Party of Great Britain, which was founded 100 years ago on 31 July 1920. The founding of the British Communist Party in 1920 took place during a period of heightened class struggle, marking an important milestone in the development of Marxism. Although only a few thousands strong, it attracted the most militant sections of the working class and led key struggles, such as those of the National Minority Movement. In its early days, the young party was affected by sectarianism, but this was later corrected with the intervention of the Communist International, led by Lenin and Trotsky. Unfortunately however, after Lenin’s death and the rise of Stalinism, the party was thrown off course, zig-zagging wildly between opportunism and ultra-left sectarianism. This doomed the party to forever remain as a fringe organisation. Ben Gliniecki discusses how, despite these mistakes, the succes

The English Revolution: the world turned upside down - part ten
24/07/2020 Duration: 32minIn our podcast series 'The World Turned Upside Down', Alan Woods (editor of In Defence of Marxism) discusses the English Revolution: a colossal event in world history that dealt an irreparable blow to feudal absolutism. In our latest episode, Alan discusses how, after King Charles' patience with his rebellious parliament ran out, he launched an attempted coup d'état, leading to one of the most famous scenes in English history, with Charles arriving at parliament with a list of names for arrest, only to find "the birds [had] flown" – and leaving empty handed to defiant calls of "privilege!" The city of London was soon in a state of revolutionary insurrection. A fight within the privileged classes had spilled out onto the streets. The masses were in control of the capital. The Civil War had begun. A careful study of the English Revolution is obligatory for every class-conscious worker, Leon Trotsky noted. The English Revolution: the world turned upside down - part nine
17/07/2020 Duration: 57minIn our podcast series 'The World Turned Upside Down', Alan Woods (editor of In Defence of Marxism) discusses the English Revolution: a colossal event in world history that dealt an irreparable blow to feudal absolutism. In our latest episode, Alan looks at the developments following the execution of Strafford. If King Charles thought Strafford's execution would calm the situation in England, he was dead wrong. Aside from continued opposition from Pym and parliament, the masses were becoming bolder, arming themselves, acquiring revolutionary force, and even starting to worry the more-moderate parliamentarians. A careful study of the English Revolution is obligatory for every class-conscious worker, Leon Trotsky noted. 10/07/2020 Duration: 41minIn our podcast series 'The World Turned Upside Down', Alan Woods (editor of In Defence of Marxism) discusses the English Revolution: a colossal event in world history that dealt an irreparable blow to feudal absolutism. In the latest episode, Alan outlines how King Charles's maneuvers forced him to recall parliament yet again. This however, gave an outlet for the pent up anger of the masses. A new period of turmoil opens up as the conflict pours out onto the streets. Petitions and political agitation spread amongst the masses throughout the country, along with unprecedented mobilisations, in particular in London. The intervention of the masses completely disrupted the comfortable relations built up between parliament and the King. An amicable deal was ruled out. Charles was pushed into a corner and forced to give up one of his key allies. A careful study of the English Revolution is obligatory for every class-conscious worker, Leon Trotsky noted. The Marxist view of history: Historical materialism
06/07/2020 Duration: 42minIn this talk from Socialist Appeal's "Marx in a Day" event in 2018(which celebrated Karl Marx's 200th birthday), Josh Holroyd discusses the contribution made by the great revolutionary thinker towards our understanding of history. With their ideas of "scientific socialism", Marx and Engels provided the first real materialist analysis of how history develops, explaining that the motor force behind society's evolution is the class struggle and the drive to increase the humankind's productive forces. In his talk, Josh contrasts the Marxist view of history with that traditionally taught in textbooks: on the one side, the idea that history is the product of 'Great Men'; and on the other side, the postmodern position, that history is just a series of unconnected and unrelated events. Above all, Josh explains, it is only by understanding the forces and factors that drive history - and, ultimately, our lives - that we can hope to change the world around us and realise a revolutionary socialist alternative.

The English Revolution: the world turned upside down - part seven
03/07/2020 Duration: 32minIn our podcast series 'The World Turned Upside Down', Alan Woods (editor of In Defence of Marxism) discusses the English Revolution: a colossal event in world history that dealt an irreparable blow to feudal absolutism. In this latest episode, Alan explained how the English Revolution began in Scotland. After 11 years of tyranny under King Charles and his court clique, their attempt at religious reform in Scotland proved a serious mistake. A riot at a Cathedral turned into a revolutionary movement, organised around the Covenant, with Bishops targeted and attacked by the poor masses and forced to flee en masse. After a disastrous first attempt to impose his reform by an invasion, Charles called a new, 'short' parliament to raise funds for war with Scotland, but it continued to resist him. After scoring victories against the English, the revolutionary Scots began to push south, with Charles forced to flee all the way to York and eventually sign a humiliating peace treaty. Charles then had no choice to call a

The English Revolution: the world turned upside down - part six
26/06/2020 Duration: 31minIn our podcast series 'The World Turned Upside Down', Alan Woods (editor of In Defence of Marxism) discusses the English Revolution: a colossal event in world history that dealt an irreparable blow to feudal absolutism. In the latest episode, Alan describes how, with parliament suspended, Charles I was determined to enforce his authority in matters of religion and state. His reforms to the church provoked horror and resentment from the people of England, and he exploited loopholes to raise cash through taxes, particularly the hated ship money. Terrible punishment was meted out against anyone who objected. But at the peak of his power, Charles was about to face a fall. In episode four, Alan Woods discusses the escalating conflicts between parliament and the Machiavellian King Charles, who wanted money to fund various military adventures. These splits at the top were concurrent with a seething discontent at the bottom of society, reflected in the murder of the King’s favourite, the Duke of Buckingham. Racism, police violence, and the socialist revolution
01/06/2020 Duration: 25minThe cold-blooded murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police is yet another horrific act of racist violence against an unarmed black man in broad daylight. This has yet again sparked protests across the country, showing that people are fed up with the systemic racism of the capitalist system. When the great revolutionary martyr Malcolm X said, “You can’t have capitalism without racism,” he summed up a profound truth about the world we live in. This racist brutality is hardwired into the capitalist system. Antonio Balmer - editor of Socialist Revolution, paper of the American section of the IMT - speaks on racism, police violence, and the need for revolution.

The English Revolution: the world turned upside down - part two
29/05/2020 Duration: 42minIn our podcast series 'The World Turned Upside Down', Alan Woods (editor of In Defence of Marxism) discusses the English Revolution: a colossal event in world history that dealt an irreparable blow to feudal absolutism. In this episode, Alan sets the scene of England on the brink of revolution. The country was facing a profound economic crisis, there was an army of downtrodden poor, and radical religious ideas were taking hold amongst the burgeoining middle classes. Under the surface, these ideas expressed class antagonisms, which were building to a fever pitch as feudalism entered its dying days. A careful study of the English Revolution is obligatory for every class-conscious worker, Leon Trotsky noted.
