28/10/2020 Duration: 34minIn this talk from the International Marxist University, Ylva Vinberg - a leading activist of Revolution, Swedish section of the IMT - provides a marxism explanation for oppression and explains the limits of identity politics. Visit podcast.marxist.com for the full recordings. In the current period, identity politics are in vogue. Along with the related trend of intersectionality, these ideas stress the importance of self-identification, personal experience, and the various layers of oppression people experience on racial, sexual, gender and other lines. What is the basis for identity politics? Why are they so popular with the youth in particular? And how do they square with the Marxist method of solidarity and class struggle? Is history bunk? - historical materialism on trial
21/10/2020 Duration: 37minIn this talk from the International Marxist University, Josh Holroyd - a leading activist with Socialist Appeal - demonstrates and defends the method of Marxist historical materialism. Visit podcast.marxist.com for the full recordings. Bourgeois, liberal and postmodern historians alike tend to reject the Marxist view that history is driven by material laws and processes. Some also reject the idea of progress, saying this is merely a point of view. They say that history is basically random, punctuated by exceptional individuals on whom the fate of human society turns. But why is it that similar conditions result in similar events, outcomes and characters reoccurring across history? And has there really been no progress between stone tools and spacecraft? Only a Marxist perspective can provide a real explanation for the development of society and the events of human history - and offer a perspective for a socialist future. From Peterloo to Chartism - The rise of the British working class
16/10/2020 Duration: 48minIn this talk from last year's Revolution Festival, Josh Holroyd discusses the rise of the working class in Britain, and the lessons from the revolutionary movement of the Chartists. Find out more on this fascinating topic by getting a copy of Rob Sewell's new book on 'Chartist Revolution', out now through Wellred Books. wellredbooks.net/chartist-revolution.html ----------------------------------------------------------------- The Peterloo massacre took place over 200 years ago in Manchester. This brutal event marked a turning point in the development of the working class and the labour movement in Britain. In the following decades, workers established a mass movement capable of striking fear into the hearts of the ruling class: Chartism. The Chartists were the first mass working-class political movement in the world. In the 1830s and 40s they mobilised hundreds of thousands of workers around their Charter, the main demand of which was for universal male suffrage to end the political monopoly of the capit

Spontaneity, organisation, and the role of the state - Marxism vs. anarchism
14/10/2020 Duration: 41minIn this talk from the International Marxist University, John Peterson of Socialist Revolution USA explores the differences between Marxism and anarchism. Marxists and anarchists share many of the same objectives in common: fighting oppression; smashing the bourgeois state; creating a society without class exploitation and so on. However, there are also important differences in our ideas and methods - particularly relating to the nature of power in general, and of state power in particular. These questions have been pushed to the fore, once again, by inspiring movements such as Black Lives Matter. It is therefore vital that revolutionaries have a clear perspective on how to organise and overthrow capitalism.

In defence Of Marxist economics
09/10/2020 Duration: 40minIn this talk from the recent International Marxist University, Rob Sewell - editor of Socialist Appeal - outlines the fundamentals of Marxist economics, and explains why only these revolutionary ideas can offer a way out of the impasse of capitalist crisis. As Rob explains, many attempts have been made over the years to ‘update’ Marx’s economic theories. Inevitably, these ideas jettison the revolutionary core of Marxist economics. Instead of applying a dialectical and materialist method to the economy, the revisionists slip into a mechanical and idealist mode of analysis. They do not see the economy as a living, breathing system, composed of human beings and conflicting classes, but as a set of abstract equations. In this talk, Rob Sewell sets the record straight, showing how revisionist ideas fall short, and giving an overview of genuine Marxist economic theory. Marxism and black liberation
08/10/2020 Duration: 37minIn this online talk organised by the Marxist Student Federation as part of Black History Month, Fiona Lali (national organiser of the MSF) explains why the fight against racism must be a fight against capitalism. In the coming weeks, the MSF will be publishing a series of articles and videos on the origins of slavery; the roots of racism; the black power struggle; from Windrush to the refugee crisis; and how we must fight against capitalism, racism, and all forms of oppression. In the wake of the murder of George Floyd, the US has been set ablaze, with police precincts being burnt down in de facto acts of insurrection. The long and sordid history of repression and brutality has been brought into the limelight. And Malcolm X’s famous saying - "you cannot have capitalism without racism" - has been emblazoned on placards at protests all over the world. In order to gain real material change for the BAME community, we must first understand where this oppression and exploitation comes from, and how it must be

Alan Woods: Trump's COVID crisis
06/10/2020 Duration: 42minAlan Woods – editor of In Defence of Marxism – comments on the situation in the USA, where it was announced last week that President Donald Trump has contracted COVID-19, amidst a farcical presidential election and the greatest crisis in the history of US capitalism. Trump’s reckless response to the pandemic has led to the USA having 7.5m COVID-19 cases and 200,000 deaths: the highest in the world. This catastrophe has caused Trump’s polling figures to plummet, leading him to furiously point the finger from China, to Black Lives Matter, to the WHO – anywhere but his own chaotic administration. Now, despite constantly downplaying the dangers of the virus and demanding a return to economic normality, the President himself has become a statistic. Meanwhile, US workers and youth are preparing to choose between two evils at the impending November elections, in the form of four more years of Trump, or the Democratic establishment candidate, Joe Biden. Adding fuel to the fire, Trump has even hinted that he migh

The poverty of philosophy - Marxism vs. Postmodernism
02/10/2020 Duration: 46minIn this talk from the recent International Marxist University, Daniel Morley, a leading activist and writer with Socialist Appeal, provides a Marxist critique of postmodernism - an idealist philosophy that is in vogue amongst certain left-wing activists and academic. Postmodernism is very popular on university campuses, and has also gained an echo in the workers’ movement. This school of thought denies the very idea of historical progress. It echoes Henry Ford, saying “history is just one damn thing after another”. Scientific truth is also sidelined in favour of a ‘subjective’ emphasis on language, experience and identity. But where do these ideas come from? And what does Marxism have to say about them? Class struggle and small circle mentality: Marxism vs. sectarianism
23/09/2020 Duration: 45minIn this talk from the International Marxist University, Claudio Bellotti - a leading activist of Sinistra Classe Rivoluzione, Italian section of the IMT - discusses the question of sectarianism. Visit podcast.marxist.com for the full recordings. In the socialist movement, there are those who compromise on political principles opportunistically in order to find a short-cut to the masses; and there those who place themselves outside the main workers’ struggle, spending their time attacking other organisations in a sectarian fashion. Opportunism and sectarianism are two sides of the same coin. Both must be combated if the programme of revolutionary Marxism is to become a mass force by connecting with the aspirations and movement of the working class. System change, not climate change: Marxism and the environment
16/09/2020 Duration: 32minIn this talk from the recent International Marxist University, Jack Halinski-Fitzpatrick - the director of Wellred Books, the official bookshop of the IMT - discusses the Marxist solution to climate change. Visit podcast.marxist.com for the full recordings. Capitalism’s rampant exploitation of the earth’s resources is wreaking havoc on the natural world: with a spike in freak weather events, floods, wildfires and so on. In recent years, the struggle against climate change has erupted with explosive force all over the world, led by school students. But does the solution lie in ‘green’ production methods and policies? Are lifestyle changes like veganism the answer? Or is the problem more fundamental, requiring a radical transformation of the capitalist system? In the penultimate episode of this series, Alan Woods discusses how the great English Revolution, which embodied the hopes and democratic aspirations of so many ordinary people, ended with the dictatorship of one man: Oliver Cromwell. But the regime over which he ruled was very different to the one that came before. A careful study of the English Revolution is obligatory for every class-conscious worker, Leon Trotsky noted. Class collaboration, compromise and the crisis of reformism
09/09/2020 Duration: 44minIn this talk from the recent International Marxist University, Niklas Albin Svensson - a leading activist of the International Marxist Tendency - explains why reformism is a dead end and only revolutionary struggle can improve the lives of working people. Visit podcast.marxist.com for the full recordings. Marxists are frequently attacked as unrealistic utopians. Rather than talking about revolution, the reformists say we should focus on winning achievable goals for workers. But all over the world, the main reformist parties and organisations have discredited themselves by carrying out attacks on the working class and holding them back in order to save the system. Now, they are in total disarray, losing elections and support across the board. The English Revolution: the world turned upside down - part sixteen
04/09/2020 Duration: 38minIn our podcast series 'The World Turned Upside Down', Alan Woods (editor of In Defence of Marxism) discusses the English Revolution: a colossal event in world history that dealt an irreparable blow to feudal absolutism. In this latest episode, Alan explains how, with the death of King Charles and the defeat of the Presbyterian counter revolution, Oliver Cromwell moved to crush the most radical wing of the New Model Army. With the Last Stand of the Levellers in 1649 and the suppression of the Diggers, the English Revolution as a popular struggle for freedom and democracy died. However, these courageous class fighters planted the seeds of the modern socialist movement, which battles on to this day. Marxism and modern science: Dialectics of Nature
02/09/2020 Duration: 45minIn this talk from the recent International Marxist University, Ben Curry - a leading activist of Socialist Appeal - discusses Marxism and modern science. Visit podcast.marxist.com for the full recordings. On the anniversary of Engels’ birth, we highlight one of Engels’ greatest works, Dialectics of Nature. With his masterful grasp of dialectics, Engels pre-empted scientific discoveries like the equivalence of matter and energy and the role of labour in the development of modern humans. Ben Curry explains that modern science serves as a continuing validation of the Marxist method of dialectical materialism, revealing a world in a constant state of motion, flux and revolution. The English Revolution: the world turned upside down - part fifteen
28/08/2020 Duration: 51minIn our podcast series 'The World Turned Upside Down', Alan Woods (editor of In Defence of Marxism) discusses the English Revolution: a colossal event in world history that dealt an irreparable blow to feudal absolutism. In this episode, Alan explains how the split between the New Model Army and parliament was widening, as the former became increasingly radical, particularly the Levellers faction. At the famous Putney Debates, revolutionary ideas (including universal suffrage) were openly discussed. Cromwell swung from revolution to counter-revolution in his attempts to mediate between the propertied parliamentarians and the army. Meanwhile, the stage was being set for the trial, and eventual execution, of King Charles. A careful study of the English Revolution is obligatory for every class-conscious worker, Leon Trotsky noted. Why has capitalism failed?
26/08/2020 Duration: 34minIn this talk from the recent International Marxist University, Adam Booth - a leading activist of Socialist Appeal - discusses the contradictions of capitalism and explains why it is in crisis. Visit podcast.marxist.com for the full recordings. Apologists for capitalism argue that it is the best, most-efficient system that could ever possibly exist. But the current period of crisis and chaos prove otherwise. Today, the COVID-19 pandemic has triggered an economic collapse that threatens to throw society back to the 1930s, sending the world into a full-blown depression. Clearly, something is rotten at the heart of the system. The advocates of Keynesian ideas – or modern varieties like Modern Monetary Theory – cannot provide a real solution to this crisis. Only the Marxist method can explain why capitalism has failed, and what the way forward is for humanity. The English Revolution: the world turned upside down - part fourteen
21/08/2020 Duration: 28minIn our podcast series 'The World Turned Upside Down', Alan Woods (editor of In Defence of Marxism) discusses the English Revolution: a colossal event in world history that dealt an irreparable blow to feudal absolutism. In this episode, Alan's discusses how, with the victory of Cromwell's army at the Battle of Naseby, the first English Civil War came to an end. The defeated King handed himself over to the Scots, hoping to play the New Model Army (likened to a combination of the Soviets, the Red Army and the Bolshevik Party) off against the propertied classes in parliament, who were increasingly worried about this armed, disciplined body of lower-class radicals. Just like after the Russian February Revolution and the fall of the Tsar, England entered into a state of dual power.
