One day in 1990, Ria was carried out of her middle school in a stretcher. She was taken by ambulance to the hospital. Her classmates gawked as she was taken out, but they didn't laugh. Usually, they did. Ria was born male, but enjoyed a very liberal, gender-neutral childhood. The pivotal moment of emergency, coming when she was 11, served as her realization that things would never again be the same. She had to begin hiding from the outside world. Safiya & I conclude our series on the Abrahamic faiths & their relationship to homosexuality with this- an exploration of homosexuality within the Islamic tradition. Drawing from Judaic & Christian foundations, but also from disparate other sources, Islam has developed a distinct relationship with transgenderism & sexual orientations. Safiya explains why the population of Pakistan is upwards of 10% what we would called 'transgender' in the west & also reveals the nuanced understanding of gender re-assignment in Iran; why the western perspective is inadequate.

Saffiyya comes to enlighten us once again on a new topic. Veering from our study of homosexuality & the Abrahamic religions briefly, she speaks about gender in the ancient world, the myth of the 'traditional family,' and why these ideas of gender and marriage narrowed for Jews & Christians. Our idea of men & women in the ancient world are not as clear cut as one would think, Saffiyya says. She talks specifically about Torah injunctions against cross-dressing, and also discussing the phenomenon of the 'eunuch' a gender which, for the most part, we do not have today Join us!

Continuing the story of Homosexuality and the Abrahamic faiths, she delves into early Christian canonical, and non-canonical texts. She explains why Martin Luther left out the book of Maccabees, while it was retained the Catholic Bible. How did the Maccabees, pre-modern Jewish fundamentalist zealots, become symbols of anti-homosexuality while never writing a single word on it? And goes bad. Again & again, Ambrosia takes her abusive cousin back into her life. While she sees the prospects of real change as dim, she recounts her past experiences with this cousin. This girl has inflicted multiple damages upon Ambrosia in their 5-year best friendship, including emotional manipulation, reducing her to tears....& even ordering a chainsaw-wielding clown to go after her! Think you could still befriend this person after these events? Hopefully not, but somehow Ambrosia still soldiers on, attempting to keep her cousin in her life although she admits that "she wouldn't be friends with her" if she wasn't family. PressTV's Caleb Maupin joins me on The Word to discuss the renewed push for violent conflict between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran. The jump-off point for our discussion is a segment on the FOX Business show "After The Bell," where several ideological statements were made regarding the Islamic Republic. One of the guests on the segment was from the influential Neo-Conservative thinktank The Institute For The Study Of War. Of course, as Mr. Maupin points out, the ISW is just "one of many," and there is a whole cottage industry devoted to this type of activity, serving to create the justification for war. Why does the American elite want war with Iran? And why now? Does it have anything to do with recent diplomatic maneuvers between the 2 countries? Mr. Maupin shares his insight on these topics, as well as others in this illuminating discussion.

Saffiya joins me to discuss a unique topic in the history of Abrahamic exegesis today -- The concept of 'hell'. Contrary to what contemporary Fundamentalist Evangelical Protestants and other Christians may believe today, what we think of as 'hell' is not a Christian concept at all. In truth, it appears to derive from the East, not the holy lands of Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. We trace the importation of the 'hell' concept from Zoroastrianism, but also discuss the fact that 'hell' is a real, visible place on earth....and it looks nothing like what you have been told.

Some parents just don't know how to behave. Whether it is one of the various forms of abuse, or just being plain hard to get along with, scores of parents behave in inappropriate ways. This conduct can irrevocably harm kids & adult children. On The Word, we listen to Eliora & Dahlia share their stories of out of control parents. Eliora's dad is a drunk, Dahlia's was pretty much never there. Then, Saffiya stops by to say all that she has to about her parents and how they affected her. Saffiya comes to Memory Lane to share the first two parts of her memoirs. In these riveting two stories, Saffiya details some of the only memories she has of childhood. "I tried to be linear," she says. But life issues in memoir often become so entangled as to be indistinguishable from one another -- The abuse, her psychopathic brother, being kicked out, almost being 'married off' by her parents at 4, communicating with spirits, eventually being kicked out all make an appearance here. and the extra-sensory abilities of Asexual individuals all make an appearance. These are the opening volleys in Saffiya's struggle to find her truth. In the next segments, to be titled "Child Rearing," she will explore how she was essentially left by her cultist, mentally-ill parents to raise her psychopathic brother whom, at one point, she had almost killed in a murder-suicide Saffiya's is a truly extraordinary life, and she speaks from a place of security and strength. Dahlia recalls this moment, and also reveals to me the nature of her doomed relationship. The Tramp of Tumblr lets it all hang out -- emotional vulnerabilities and all. In addition to talking about her experience in polyamory, she opens up about her parents, a subject that she is used to talking about. Dahlia's father abandoned her, and her possibly-mentally ill mother engaged in the opposite behaviour. Dahlia sums up what she has learned, and explains why she would 'do it the same way' again if she had the chance, despite the tumult of her relationship.

I have interviewed the infamous 'cement woman' & now-Reality star Rajée in the past, but now she is on Memory Lane to share one of her intimate memories. She recalls a touching scene of bullying, kindness, & then thankfulness that ensued when she was harassed by teenage boys and then rescued by an older, sympathizer. She talks about the impact of this man's words & deeds on her life. Using that memory as a jump-off, we forward the conversation into the related topics of intolerance, discrimination against difference, gender roles, and how abuse can be an expression of distorted attraction.
