One day in 1990, Ria was carried out of her middle school in a stretcher. She was taken by ambulance to the hospital. Her classmates gawked as she was taken out, but they didn't laugh. Usually, they did. Ria was born male, but enjoyed a very liberal, gender-neutral childhood. The pivotal moment of emergency, coming when she was 11, served as her realization that things would never again be the same. She had to begin hiding from the outside world.
