In 1936 a story written by H.P. Lovecraft, titled “A Shadow Out of Time”, was published in an issue of the science fiction magazine Astounding Stories. The story described a race of extraterrestrial beings who tasked themselves with exploring all of history by projecting their conscious minds into both the past and the future. Tuberculosis, also known as the Great White Plague, had killed one in seven people that had ever lived by the early 19th century.
