  • Ep 236: Dialogue | Street Knowledge | Viquesi | Christianity is True and Truth is Relative

    15/05/2018 Duration: 08min

Recorded: 5 May 2018 Published: 5 May 2018 Released: 15 May 2018 Watch video of talk here: https://youtu.be/LqMxXkb333c In this talk I speak with Viquesi about his belief in Christianity. He says that he believes in Christianity because it helps him out in his daily life. I then use the Outsider Test for Faith, and the conversation got into the relative nature of truth. Viquesi says that truth is what we make it, at least when it comes to religion. I wished I would have got into how interested he is personally in knowing that what he believes is true. If, hypothetically, he were wrong, would he want to know? Or I could have used the analogy he introduced about believing that your shoes will keep you safe, or your raincoat will keep you dry. If someone believed their raincoat would keep them dry, but then went outside in the rain and noticed that their clothes were getting drenched, should they alter their belief accordingly? If he found out he was wrong, would he change his belief? Let me know what you th

  • Ep 235: Dialogue | Street Knowledge | Aliyah | There is No God

    15/05/2018 Duration: 12min

Recorded: 12 May 2018 Published: 12 May 2018 Released: 15 May 2018 Watch video of talk here: https://youtu.be/WFe0Kaq09RI My favorite part of this discussion was when the person I was interviewing, after being asked a thought-provoking question about her belief, and after pondering for a moment how to answer, said: “Now I have to think about that. What have you done?” I love seeing that, and any conversation that causes self-reflection and a critical self-examination of one’s beliefs, is successful in my book. Aliyah is an atheist. She believes there is no God due to insufficient evidence. So we talk briefly about the role of evidence in her belief, as well as what would count as sufficient evidence for her. What would it take to convince her that there was, in fact, a God? • Ep 231: Dialogue | Street Knowledge | Claudia | Everything Happens for a Reason

    27/04/2018 Duration: 12min

Recorded: 14 April 2018 Published: 27 April 2018 Released: 27 April 2018 Claudia believes that everything happens for a reason. So I ask her about how she knows this is true. How would we put such a claim to the test? If we know it is true because of the connection between seemingly random events, then what if, hypothetically, one of those events had not occurred? How do we distinguish between a connection between two events being because everything happens for a reason, and a connection being because of our interpretation after the fact? What role do our memories play in understanding such things? Is it possible for such connections to occur and yet everything not happen for a reason? What would disprove her belief? If she were wrong about this belief, would she want to know, and what difference would it make? Would life be any less meaningful for her if she found out that everything didn’t happen for a reason? Listen and find out how she thinks through all these things. Also, I apologize for some of the w

  • Ep 226: Dialogue | Street Knowledge | Rozetta | The Bible is True

    06/04/2018 Duration: 18min

Recorded: 5 April 2018 Published: 6 April 2018 Released: 6 April 2018 Here, I talk with Rozetta about her belief that the Bible is true. She believes this, she says, because she has yet to find any untrue things in the Bible. So we talk about what untrue things she would have to find in order to decrease her level of certainty. We also talk about how open she would be to changing her mind if that evidence were in place. If finding true things in the Bible makes the Bible true, would finding untrue things make the Bible untrue? Rozetta explains how she works through all this to arrive at her conclusion.
