GRAMLINS?! The second episode of our Joe Dante miniseries covers an absolute masterpiece in the canon of both of our favorite genres: kids’ horror comedy and live action cartoon genre. We’re starting with Dante’s first-ish feature from 1978, PIRANHA. Despite (or, perhaps, THANKS TO??) the constraints of the Roger Corman school of filmmaking, PIRANHA features many signature Joe Dante elements: swarm of nasty little guys, Looney Tunes-esque climactic setpieces, and Dick Miller. Also coming up in this run will be Gremlins, The ‘Burbs, and Small Soldiers.

Thus concludes our analysis of a confused and confusing recapitulation of a legitimately very good movie. This series will not be…mist. Lots of low points, but at least it escalates in some weird ways. And, if nothing else, it’s very cool to see the Fisher King from The Fisher King still getting work.
