Trained as physician, Dr. Puchalski worked with Dr. Lynn and Dr. Teno on the SUPPORT Study. She then focused on spirituality to develop a working definiton for the field. She has worked with Dr. Ferrell to educate providers on the importance of spirituality in health care and individuals with serious illness.

Trained as a nurse and focused on research, Dr. Ferrell has led cancer nursing, pain management, and nursing education in end of life care. She helped create the nursing agenda for ensuring nursing has the skills to care for individuals with serious illness in the creation of the ELNEC project. She has mentored and educated nurses internationally as well as written books, and numerous, chapters, and articles. She was co-editor of five editions of the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Nursing.

Trained as physician, Dr. Meier was geriatrician at Mt. Sinai who has been a thought leader in palliative care. She has been involved in many aspects of palliative care. She created CAPC and won a MacArthur Award for her work.

Trained as a social worker, Ms. Atilio has been a leader in social work. She was PDIA scholar and a MayDay Fellow and led the development of the role of social work in pain management. She co-edited the Textbook of Palliative Social Work.

Trained in nursing Dr. Coyle began her palliative care career in pain control at MSKCC. She has mentored and educated nurses internationally as well as written books, and numerous, chapters, and articles. She was co-editor of the early editions of the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Nursing. She has lectured extensively on pain and palliative care as well as ethical issues for nurses and was a consultant for the New York State Task Force on Life and the Law, Committee on Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia.

Trained as a primary care physician who care for older adults. He was medical director of the first hospice residence in Massachusetts, and then became a teacher to medical students about palliative care. He is now retired.

Trained as an emergency physician, Dr. Byock has been involved with hospice and palliative care since the 1970s. He is a past president of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine He led the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Promoting Excellence in End of Life Care program and the Missoula Demonstration Project. He directs the Center for Human Caring. and served as director for Promoting Excellence in End-of-Life Care, a national grant program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Trained as a nurse, Dr. Corless has focused her care on hospice and care of patients with HIV/AIDS. She is part of the International Workgroup on Death and Dying and emeritus at the MGH Institute of Health Professions. She serves on the National Academy of Practice’s Policy Committee and on the Finance & Operating Committee of the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science.

Educated as a sociologist, Dr. Clark has been in the center of hospice and palliative care throughout his career. He is a social scientist and historian. He wrote a definitive biography on Dame Cecily Saunders. He is now emeritus as University of Glasgow.

Trained as a physician, Dr. Von Gunten let one of the first palliative care programs at Northwestern Hospital. He then led the San Diego Hospice and started and international program. He is editor of the Journal of Palliative Medicine. Dr. Ferris trained in Canada and developed home-based palliative care and then worked on the EPEC- O curriculum. He has participated in global development of palliative medicine.

Trained in economics, Ms. Gibson is the is a senior advisor at The Hastings Center. She led national health care quality and safety initiatives at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. She was chief architect of the foundation’s decade-long strategy that successfully established palliative care in more than 1,600 hospitals in the United States.

Trained as a physician, Dr. Foley focused on pain management within neurology and started palliative care. She originated the Project on Death in America and developed an international plan for palliative care worldwide. Dr Foley is emeritus at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Trained as physician, Dr. Lynn was an early hospice physician geriatrician and long term care physician. She developed the and ran the SUPPORT study. She has served at CMS, IHI, and the Washington Department of Health to improve the quality of health care and care to elders.

Trained in public administration, Ms. Twohig has a long history of involvement with community based programs. She served as deputy director of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s national program Promoting Excellence in End-of-Life Care and then was deputy director of the Duke Institute on Care at the End of Life at Duke University. She is currently a consultant for CAPC.

Trained as a urologic oncology surgeon, Dr. Mount is the father of palliative care in North America. He coined the term palliative care, while he developed a robust palliative care program at McGill University in Montreal Canada. He also began the McGill Biennial International Congress. He also helped develop a manual for other programs across the globe.

Trained as a psychologist, Dr. Connor has been involved in hospice care since the 1970s. He worked in the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization around the Hospice Benefit. For the last 15 years, he has focused on international palliative care. He is Executive Director of the Worldwide Hospice and Palliative Care Alliance.

Trained as a physician, He developed the first palliative care program in the United States at Cleveland Clinic. In he is editor-in-chief for the BMJ Supportive and Palliative Care journal.

Trained in public health, Ms. Lund Person was involved in the development of hospice in its early years and worked on the passage of the Medicare Hospice Benefit. She is the Vice President of Regulator and Compliance for NHPCO.

Trained as a physician, he was a pioneer in hospice care and pain management. Dr Twycross served as the Director of the World Health Organization's Collaborating Centre for Palliative Care from 1988–2005,
