    In South Sudan's Yida Refugee Camp, Ross Wood gets things done. Ross recently finished working as relief coordinator in the Yida Refugee Camp, where he managed and oversaw programs that serve the 70,000 refugees and provided important services such as food distributions, clean water production, health and hygiene training and nutrition counseling. He joins us today with his first-hand experiences working as an educator and advocate for peace in not just South Sudan, but also Nicaragua, Morocco and Israel.

  • Combating Campus Sexual Violence

    Last week, Governor Terry McAuliffe formed a task force to combat sexual violence at the state's colleges and universities, addressing a problem that has commanded attention this year in Washington and on campuses nationwide. Today we'll talk with representatives from our local universities about their efforts to prevent sexual violence and ensure prompt and fair resolution when cases arise.

  • The Veterans' Docket

    The Supreme Court of Virginia sought out the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board with a $200,000 one-year grant to start a veterans' specific docket in its decade-old civilian drug court. The enhanced services offered by the veterans' track will include family therapy, re-entry assistance, PTSD care, psychiatric assessment and medication monitoring. The program's organizers join us live in studio to discuss the pilot program and its benefits for veterans in crisis.

This year marks the fifth edition of the telephone survey designed to gauge the "mood" of our region. We'll speak with the creators of the survey and see how Hampton Roads residents feel about diverse issues and topics including transportation and traffic, local and state government, education, health, emergency preparedness, the economy and crime.

  • The Burning Shore

    For the United States, World War II began in the Pacific Ocean at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on the morning of Dec. 7, 1941. In the Atlantic, however, the war reached North American shores on Jan. 11, 1942, with the beginning of Operation Drumbeat. For six months, the waters off the coast of Tidewater and the Outer Banks played host to a small group of German U-boats. The fleet operated with impunity and sunk hundreds of Allied merchant vessels, occasionally in view of Virginia Beach residents and tourists. In The Burning Shore, Ed Offley details the events of those desperate months, and he joins guest host, Liz Humes, to share that incredible story.

  • LGBTQ In Hampton Roads

    Today Virginia's same-sex marriage ban was ruled unconstitutional last week in the first such decision by a federal appellate court in the South. The Virginia lawsuit that brought about the ruling was filed by two same-sex couples, including Timothy Bostic and Tony London of Norfolk, who had been denied a marriage license. The ruling is the latest several developments in the LGBTQ community's pursuit of equal rights under the law. On this edition of HearSay with Cathy Lewis, a panel of guests throughout the hour will discuss the movement and also how it will be a part of a large celebration, PrideFest 2014, coming up on August 23rd at Norfolk's Town Point Park.
