For the United States, World War II began in the Pacific Ocean at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on the morning of Dec. 7, 1941. In the Atlantic, however, the war reached North American shores on Jan. 11, 1942, with the beginning of Operation Drumbeat. For six months, the waters off the coast of Tidewater and the Outer Banks played host to a small group of German U-boats. The fleet operated with impunity and sunk hundreds of Allied merchant vessels, occasionally in view of Virginia Beach residents and tourists.
