Send us a textLet's head back to the summer of 2018 when we first met comedian, United Shades of America host, and Bay Area resident W. Kamau Bell. He said yes to an interview over Twitter and it was just in time for our 300th episode. It's one of our favorite interviews because after our 30 minutes was up with him, he asked us if we could go to 45 minutes. Why, yes of course we could, Mr. Bell! To celebrate our 300th we also decided to throw a brunch party at one of our favorite San Francisco businesses - Fleetwood. We had DJ Bitesize spinning our favorite songs and breakfast burritos by Chef Mandy Jay. It was a packed house with all of our friends, family, and listeners. Along with being a very powerful film about an underdog activist running for political office, it's also the first film from Kenya to ever premiere at Sundance! We get into the corruption and misinformation in Kenyan politics, Boni's journey from photojournalist to political candidate, and how they all risked their lives in being part of his story. The sacrifice it takes to put your life's purpose ahead of your own self interests has tough consequences for a family, but it is something that we, as constituents, hope for in a political leader. But in the context of a social uprising in support of black lives, this film is a cautionary tale. Director/producer/writer Merawi Gerima is here to make sure his community in DC not only has a voice, but does not get erased. We sit down with him to discuss why he felt a sense of urgency to tell this story, and how he hopes this film can become part of a larger conversation that leads towards real systematic change. We get into his stylistic choices, and how casting locals from the neighborhood (including his mother, filmmaker Shirikiana Aina) added authenticity to the story. We also give a shout out to Ava DuVernay's production company, Array, for opening important doors for marginalized voices to be heard.
