CAAMFest 2021: WUHAN WUHAN Director Yung Chang
17/05/2021 Duration: 16minSend us a textThe documentary WUHAN WUHAN follows five stories as the Covid-19 epidemic is at its worst in the Wuhan province in China during February and March of 2020. Director Yung Chang was not in Wuhan filming as this part of the pandemic was unfolding, but was fortunate to receive the footage from a team of filmmakers that were in Wuhan by chance at the time. The stories give a snapshot of how some of the citizens of Wuhan were dealing with the lock down in real time and how humanity and science can work together. All of the stories in WUHAN WUHAN are important as we emerge (carefully) from a 14 month shutdown to understand how our fellow humans across the world dealt with Covid, the toll it took on their community, and to put faces to the political rhetoric and hate that was and is still prevalent now. Talking With Arianna (Boss Bitch) Basco
14/05/2021 Duration: 34minSend us a textIf you listened in to our last episode with Dante Basco, you heard us mention his sister, Arianna Basco. She's one of the co-writers of the film The Fabulous Filipino Brothers and in our humble opinion, takes the movie to the next level. Arianna is a spoken word artist, musician, author, producer, and is the founder of the Palms Up Academy . When she's not hustlin' for herself or the community, she's a single mother of two and is the only girl in a family full of Basco boys. Arianna, or Lady B as she is called, is certainly an artist and bad bitch in her own right, the Basco bros have so much to learn from their baby sis. We vibed so hard with Arianna and felt like we could have talked another 30 min...we hope this isn't the last time you'll hear from her on Bitch Talk. Enjoy! You can find Arianna on IG and TwitterYou can donate to and find Palms Up Academy here--Be well, stay safe, Black Lives Matter, AAPI Lives Matter, and thank you for wearing a mask. --Buy us a

Getting Special-ish with Comedian/Director Jessica Watkins
11/05/2021 Duration: 23minSend us a textIn 2014 comedian Jessica Watkins walked across America as a shtick to get noticed. (You have to have a shtick as a comedian to get a Netflix special, duh.) What Jessica didn't know was that heading out on her own to walk across the U.S. , meeting strangers and relying on gut would completely change her life. We spoke with Jessica about her comedy, her legendary mom, dumb DJ questions, making a documentary, and more in this episode as her film about her 8 month trip, SPECIALish debuts tomorrow on all streaming and on-demand services. SPECIALish is just the kind of story we need as we emerge out of the pandemic and sheltering in place. There's so much humor and truth as the film unfolds that it's 100% relatable. We loved the film and love Jessica's stand-up. Once you watch it, we think you will too!You can follow Jessica here--Be well, stay safe, Black Lives Matter, AAPI Lives Matter, and thank you for wearing a mask. --Buy us a cup of coffee!Subscribe to our channel on YouTub

Basic Bitch - Vaccine Side Effects, Mixtapes, and Wedding Night Ideas
04/05/2021 Duration: 42minSend us a textWe had to come back with another Basic Bitch episode because there's just too much going on. From the new QAnon documentary (not ideal for watching right before bed) to vaccine side effects (spoiler alert: it's not that bad). We mourn the loss of too many greats that recently passed, and have a surprising new suggestion for when to watch Moonstruck- one of the best films of all time. And then we really show our age as we reminisce about mixtapes and The Babysitter's Club. And what the hell is diaper porn? Flash Back Friday - Director Shalini Kantayya of Coded Bias
30/04/2021 Duration: 15minSend us a textWelcome to Flash Back Friday! With 500+ episodes, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with our new listeners (and maybe new to our regular listeners). This week we're celebrating Coded Bias, an important documentary that we covered for Sundance 2020 which is available right now on Netflix! Thanks to the work of MIT researcher Joy Buolamwini, we have further evidence that artificial intelligence programs (that are used in advertising, hiring, policing, etc) are as oppressive as the people that create them. We sat down with Shalini Kantayya, director of the documentary Coded Bias, which follows Joy on her quest for civil rights by creating the Algorithmic Justice League (now THAT's a superhero movie that needs to be made!). We discuss how and why Shalini made this film, and how the dangers of Big Brother watching us are far more disastrous than we ever imagined. SF Film 2021 - The Spokeswoman director Luciana Kaplan
21/04/2021 Duration: 21minSend us a textIn 2018 Mexico had a presidential election and saw a new type of candidate in Maria de Jesus Patricio Martinez aka Marichuy who was appointed by the National Indigenous Council to run for office. Their approach was not singular, it was community driven and headed by a woman who was a doctor and a long time activist. In this interview, we speak with director Luciana Kaplan who captured this inspired story called The Spokeswoman . The film not only focuses on the candidate but the adversity she faces as well as the overwhelming support for the bigger issues at hand that she represents. The story is universal and Marichuy is a force to be reckoned with. Much love to SFFilm for screening this film. We're encouraged by this beautiful story. His name is Stewart Brand and not only did he create, along with his first wife Lois Jennings, this counterculture magazine that started in 1968 and ran sporadically until 1998, he's credited in helping to be a co-founder of the environmental movement, as well as being one of the first adapters of computer technology as we know it (he was in the garage with Jobs and The Woz folks!), campaigning to see a photograph of the earth on the streets of San Francisco, and is now trying to bring back the woolly mammoth. Yep, you read that right. In the film We Are As Gods, we speak with co-director Jason Sussberg about the man, the myth, and the legend about his documentary about the real life Forrest Gump aka Stewart Brand and how does one capture this persons life and work in one film.
