The 50's and 60's were the place for giant insect and mysterious island movies. They were weird, fun and stupid wrapped up in giant spiders harassing women in ragged outfits, I love them! The DC animated movies are hands down better than the live action ones. But they don't strive to be different enough from each other; Batman Ninja is probably the only exception. It's ridiculous! Decades ago Mystery Inc. went it in a really weird and really fun direction. They dropped that loser and Velma and picked up an immigrant child literally named scam artist and hunter real life cartoon ghosts! How fucking awesome is that? Daphne was hot and in charge, Scooby and Shaggy were funny, Flim Flam was fun if not culturally insensitive character and scrappy was there but I can look past that. It had Vincent price and everything! But we were left unfulfilled with the 13th Ghost out there wrecking havoc! Now we finally have an ending...kinda. Enlist today! It's evolution baby! 2001 seems so far gone and with it the memory of an attempted Ghostbusters by the guy who brought you The Ghostbusters. A group of scientists and a guy fight an otherworldly menace as the government fucks up the situation because they exist and smother themselves in their own power. I can admit when I'm wrong, but I wasn't completely wrong about Titans; available now on DC Universe. I should be talking about season 2 of The Punisher but instead I'm talking about Titans the gritty take on the Classic comic Teen Titans. Holy shit they murder a lot of people in this one. I figured it would be trash but it was oddly enjoyable and quite frankly I'm looking forward to seeing what they pull out of their ass for season 2. The latest in DC's animated universe is another Constantine film and it's passable. It's not bad but I feel like it's lacking in comparison to other DC animated movies: the characters feel lacking, the tension feels forced and Constantine despite being a streetwise magical grifter can't see obvious lies in front of his face or he doesn't have a plan to handle them. A good video game movie is hard to come by but they do exist. 2018's Tomb Raider reboot is not really one of them. Maybe there is a promise for a sequel but let's be honest no one is clambering for that. I felt nothing. Cookie cutter characters and story lead to a cookie cutter movie. We did it! 5 sequels to a series that if we are being honest probably never should have had more than 2. Returning to the series is the man, the myth, the entire reason Tremors has more than 2 sequels; Michael Gross as Burt Gummer and recent addition to the series Jamie Kennedy.
