Synopsis

Broadcasting from the heart of Westwood with Iford Primary School, Westwood Radio is organised and run by the children for the local school and village community of Westwood, Wiltshire in the UK. Reporting on school news, sports, items of community, local and national interest and even birthday shout outs and interviews, the content of each broadcast is created entirely by the children and presented with confidence and energy LIVE every Friday afternoon at 2.30pm.

    In the studio today we were delighted to be joined by Lisa Barry, who spoke with Daniel about the wonderful Westwood Dawn Chorus walk they went on a couple of weeks ago. This was a chance to listen to a fine selection of birds at the break of day in their natural habitat and identify them with some help from an ornithological expert. You can head some of the sounds captured by Joe Gidley, a Sound Recordist who accompanied the group, at the end of the interview. The birds you will hear, in this order, are: Dawn chorus of songbirds, Tawny Owl, Duet of Blackbird and Song Thrush, Tawny Owl, Wood Pigeons, Wren, Blackcap, Wood pigeons and Wren, Song Thrush and Duet of Song Thrush and Wren. Our boys writing group, who have only worked together twice before, put together and presented a stunning show using scripts that they had chosen and written themselves.     Today saw the start of a new project to raise confidence in boys reading and writing through the use of broadcasting. These boys had never worked together in a studio before; they wrote their own scripts, developed broadcasting technique and produced a show all in one afternoon. With Mr Rockey hosting to model for future shows, there was such excitement, energy and outstanding commitment from these young people. It made us very proud!
