Deep Dive: Public school vaccination bills
30/01/2026 Duration: 11minVaccinations for children attending public schools could see some changes if a bill being discussed on Capitol Hill this afternoon moves ahead. State Representative Trevor Lee is introducing a revised bill that -- instead of banning vaccination requirements -- would make it easier for parents to get vaccine exemptions. A previous iteration of the bill would have outright banned the requirement for vaccinations and while that's no longer the case, Representative Lee says he's still interested in pursuing that route in the future. In this Deep-Dive, Maria Shilaos digs into the issue of mandated vaccinations for public school students. We hear from Representative Lee first; Maria is then joined by Dr. David Cope, Family Medicine Physician at Ogden Clinic to get his takes on the proposals.

Deep Dive: Changing dietary guidelines from the FDA
27/01/2026 Duration: 12minDuring the second Trump Administration, there have been several changes at the FDA, including changing dietary guidelines. Those changing standards have created a lot of confusion -- there has been quite a few reversals in the guidelines. For example, previous guidance said to not eat as much red meat; now, the FDA is encouraging people to eat more meat and protein. In another instance, earlier advice said to reduce the amount of saturated fats one would eat; now, the FDA says people should eat more saturated fats. The administration also recently said that it was time for people to ditch the diet soda pops... including a drink many Utahns love: Diet Coke. Dr. Carrie Durward, Associate Professor of nutrition, dietetics, and food sciences at Utah State University joins Maria Shilaos to break down the changing guidelines and how people can make sense of them.
