As Utah's inversion continues, the soupy air is causing respiratory issues for many along the Wasatch Front. The poor air quality has many wondering what they can do to help clean the air -- how can they play their part in the process? UCAIR program manager Mallory Diaz-Vela joined Maria Shilaos to share some simple tips that everyone can do as we all work to clear the air.

Emotional testimony and frustration at today's State Board of Education meeting, as the board discusses potential budget cuts as requested by state lawmakers. Last week, the Utah State Legislature asked the board to recommend a $300 million cut to public education. It’s led to a huge response from students and educators from across the state, many of whom are concerned about what’s going to be cut. KSL NewsRadio's Heather Peterson joined Maria Shilaos to recap the meeting and to share insights into the testimony from those in attendance.

Doctors are calling it a breakthrough: cancer survival rates have increased dramatically over the years. New reporting shows that in the U.S., cancer survival rates over the last 5 years have reached an all-time high. For anyone who's ever had cancer or has seen the effects of cancer on a loved on, this is probably amazing news to hear. Maria Shilaos goes in-depth on the causes behind this rate change and how it compares to survival rates for cancer patients here in Utah. She speaks with Dr. Clark Gamblin, GI Surgeon and Investigator at Huntsman Cancer Institute and Inaugural Chief of Surgical Oncology at the University of Utah to get deeper insights into what the medical research shows is driving this positive trend.

It's day 3 of a major nurses strike in New York City, with thousands of nurses taking to the picket line. The nurses are on the picket lines, demanding better pay, better patient ratios, and a safer work environment. Here in Utah, Executive Director of the Utah Nurses Association Liz Close says working conditions aren't that much different. She says nurses don't strike for frivolous reasons, so the nurses in New York City must have good reasons to leave their patients and take to the picket lines. Besides pay, she tells KSL NewsRadio's Don Brinkerhoff that nursing workloads have gotten greater and greater, meaning nurses have more and more patients to take care of. She also says nurses have been dealing with more violence in the workplace too, leading to greater concerns of safety.
