In the early years there's the typical abuse and subsequent trauma, then the discovery of substances and behaviors that help you cope with the world. In my case, it was alcohol and pornography. I hid my addictions to both pornography and alcohol for 25 years. In that time, I became an award-winning journalist, married a great woman and had two kids. In early 2009, I created a popular magazine in Central Maine, launched a film festival in northern New England and won a seat on my City Council. My mother suffered from anxiety and depression when I was born and when I was 7 months old she died of cancer. I went on to lose two other surrogate mothers before I was 5 years old. My stepmother was violent and abusive and my father was absent as I grew up. This led to me being stuck in fight and flight as I grew up and resulted in low self-esteem. On leaving home I fell into a shadowy world of drugs, crime, violence, and homelessness. But at 27 the arrival of my firstborn son inspired me to begin my inner journey of healing and transformation which I am still on. This journey has included: divorce, severe illness, overcoming addiction and learning to love and accept myself. I realized early on that my service to the collective influenced my own healing and the extent to which I was engaged and successful in my own healing impacted how much I could empower others. When I was just two years old, I had a recurring dream that I was a Tibetan monk who died on a bridge just as described in the story in the book Chaos to Clarity. I had the same dream every night for a year. My parents were so worried as I woke up every night screaming. They took me to specialists until one doctor told them I was too hot, they took my blankets and clothes off and the dream stopped. Then some months before my mom passed away she told me about a meeting she had with a Maori elder in an orchard when she was just 16 and the information she was given about my past lives and future which matched the dream I had at the age of 2. She said she didn’t tell me because she didn’t want me to be influenced by such a powerful prophecy and wanted me to live my life freely. She was scared I would leave her and become a monk! I gave mom the pearl I had received from the heart of the statue of the Goddess of Compassion, Guan Yin Avalokiteshvara, that is central to this story and it disappeared not long after. h

Lynn and I discuss being in an orphanage at 5, then to California and from 7-9 in juvenile hall. 9-13 foster care where she survived sexual abuse, and then back into the home where she was taken from. Surviving with food from dumpsters, writing since she was 12, alcoholic parents, a dad who gambled, 6 siblings to being a nurse and working in the police force with their rape cases, then retiring. It was quite an adventure!
