Synopsis

After 30 years together, spanning dozens of countries across four different continents, Sheila Dee and Evo Terra have collected their fair share of funny stories. On season four of This One Time, they're using those stories to answer relationship questions from their global network of fans. Licensed therapists? Nope. Clearly not. But funny, to be sure!

  • Favorite Continental Things & German Train Christmas Nightmare [Season 2, Episode 8]

    23/12/2015 Duration: 24min

This week’s show comes to you from again and for the last time Brisbane, Australia. We’ve been here for two months and need to be moving on. Where? Well, that’s an interesting story. After living the life of full-time travelers for nearly a full year, we’ve decided to explore life from the perspective of expats living full time in… Southeast Asia. Specifically, we’re moving to Bangkok at the end of the year. Our focus will shift a bit, as we haven’t had a home base in quite a while. Still, the adventures will continue, as we keep living life abroad. We share two travel stories on today’s program, one recorded in Thailand (but is actually about Germany) and one from our deck here in Brisbane: 1. German Train Christmas Nightmare Music credit: Kings of Tara by Kevin MacLeod We’ve been fans of and friends with Traveling Jackie since we were on her podcast earlier this year. She comes by that name honestly, making our 14 countries in a year seem like child’s play. We sat down with her in Thailand and found out why

  • Hobos From Hanoi & Bali Biking Boo Boos [Season 2, Episode 7]

    16/12/2015 Duration: 22min

Greetings once again from Brisbane, Australia! After five weeks “down under”, we’ve noticed an interesting fashion trend. Maybe it’s the warm climate. Maybe it’s the carefree nature of Australians. Or maybe they just like tops a size or two too big, because there’s a lot of sideboob going on down here. We share two travel stories on today’s program, one from Vietnam and one from Bali: 1. Hobos from Hanoi Music credit: Pyro Flow by Kevin MacLeod In all seriousness, taking the North-South Reunification Line for a slow, scenic way down Vietnam is a great idea. Overnight trains are much more comfortable than overnight flights, so if you’re not in a hurry and want to spend a couple days in Hue, Da Nang, and Nha Trang along the way, it’s a great way to get from Hanoi down to Ho Chi Minh City. However, under no circumstances should you elect to take the straight-shot back from Ho Chi Minh City back to Hanoi. Because that way lies 33 hours of madness. 2. Bali Biking Boo Boos Music credit: Fretless by Kevin MacLeod

  • Flying the Awesome Barrier Reef & Skype Through The Ages [Season 2, Episode 6]

    09/12/2015 Duration: 20min

Hello vicarious travelers and welcome to Brisbane, Australia! We’ve been in Australia for just over a month and, as some of you have noticed, have been awfully quiet on Periscope. Where we were doing five or six scopes a day in Thailand, it’s down to two to three times a week. Yikes! It seems that connectivity is to blame. In Airlie Beach, the cell signal isn’t the highest quality. And to top it off, the cheap smartphone Evo bought to replace his iPhone (the worst phone for any long-term international traveler) is just that: cheap. It may have a quad core processor, but it doesn’t play well with the Periscope app. And that kinda sucks. But we think we have a workaround, and we’ll start implementation of that right away. Because we’re jonesing to do more live video for you from our travels around the world! We share two travel stories on today’s program, one from Australia and one from Thailand: 1. Flying the Awesome Barrier Reef Music credit: RetroFuture by Kevin MacLeod It’s called the Great Barrier Reef f

  • Aussie Animals That Haven’t Tried To Kill Us & Breaking Out Of A Finnish Prison [Season 2, Episode 5]

    02/12/2015 Duration: 25min

Hello vicarious travelers and welcome once again to Airlie Beach, Queensland, Australia! We have made friends here both in the wildlife and human life. Evo needs to start the show with a huge mea culpa to all our Periscope followers. He’d promised you a scope of the flight over the Great Barrier Reef. And scope he did… but from the wrong account. Oops. You’ll have to live with the images and blog post. For now. Sorry. We share two travel stories on today’s program, one from Australia and one from Finland: 1. Aussie Animals That Haven’t Tried To Kill Us Music credit: The Lift by Kevin MacLeod We’ve been in Australia for almost a month now and have seen a wide variety of wildlife. And like anyone not born here, we’ve been told all our lives that every creature in Australia is deadly. So cautious though we’ve been, we’re a little disappointed that nothing has even tried to kill us. Maybe that’s because we’re not trying to lick them. 2. Breaking Out Of A Finnish Prison Music credit: Sticks and Ticks by Kevin MacL

  • Best Fish and Chips In The World & Any Train's The Right Train, Right? [Season 2, Episode 4]

    25/11/2015 Duration: 13min

Hello vicarious travelers and welcome once again to Airlie Beach, Queensland, Australia! For our American listeners: Happy Thanksgiving next week! Oddly enough, it’s not celebrated in Australia. The just call it Thursday. We did, however, see a turkey. No kidding. We stalked an Australian brushturkey through the rainforest -- only to discover that they’re actually quite common. So less stalking and more… following. As lovely as Australia is, it’s damned expensive. At $2.75 AUD for a postage stamp, our fundraising via postcards from abroad is taking quite a hit this month. Coupled with the insanely pricey beer ($50 AUD for a case of crappy beer?), we’re blowing through our funds at an astronomical rate. We’d call the pricing criminal, but that would just be playing to a stereotype. And we’d not get on with the show. Which we should. We share two travel stories on today’s program, one from Hong Kong and one from Germany: 1. Best Fish & Chips In The World Music credit: Hep Cats by Kevin MacLeod While we were

  • We Put The Beer In 4DX & Photographing Mrs. Not-Huh [Season 2, Episode 3]

    18/11/2015 Duration: 18min

Hello vicarious travelers and welcome to Airlie Beach, Australia! We haven’t actually seen all that much, as we’ve been playing catchup from the prior six weeks of nearly non-stop travel. Welcome to the realities of a life living abroad: sometimes, you have to work. Even in paradise. There are actually two ways to get the show early: If you want to see the magic behind the curtain, follow our Periscope account. We broadcast the live recording of the intro each week. And more importantly, our Patreon supportersget the show a full 24-hours before it gets released on the site, in iTunes, or anywhere else. It’s the least we can do for the people who help financially support us each month -- even for as little as a buck! We share two travel stories on today’s program, one from Hong Kong and one from Hanoi, Vietnam: 1. We Put The Beer In 4DX Music: Danger Storm by Kevin MacLeod Remember when you were 16 and you snuck beer into the theater? We did that too, but we had a lot more fun sneaking a couple of craft beers

  • Death By Motorscooter & All Who Are Hyphenated Are Not Married [Season 2, Episode 2]

    11/11/2015 Duration: 16min

Opportunity has brought us to Sydney, Australia, where we’re busy soaking up the sights in between freak rainstorms down under! Special thanks to our gracious hosts Kevin and Imp for giving us a cheap (read: FREE!) place to stay in one of the world’s most expensive cities. Kevin’s a body painter, and you can check out his work (which often features Imp and do I really need to put in the NSFW label?) over at The Painted Body. We share two travel stories on today’s program, one from Hanoi, Vietnam and one from Bangkok, Thailand: 1. Death By Motorscooter Music: The Lift by Kevin MacLeod On our first night in Hanoi, we took a walk around the city. And were almost immediately killed by traffic. Of all the countries we’ve visited in southeast Asia, Vietnam has the worst traffic. And that’s oddly quaint. The preferred method of transportation? Motorscooters. They outnumber cars hundreds to one. They seem to have their own set of traffic rules that are completely unrelated to other vehicles or pedestrians. The right

  • Quarter Life Crisis & The BB Clee [Season 2, Episode 1]

    30/10/2015 Duration: 14min

This episode mixes beer and finance in one unexpected little package, with stories told in Hue, Vietnam and in Hong Kong. It’s just over 14 minutes long, so listen and enjoy! (Side note: We Periscoped the recording of the first part of the show, and we might do that every week! So give us a follow and you can watch live!) If you were a fans of the 30 episodes (or 42, if you count the minis) that made up our first season; don’t worry. Our commitment to a tightly produced travel podcast where we tell the stories from our everyday experiences of our travels around the world remains. We’re just getting a little help from the friends we meet along the way! Long-time listeners of ours (we’ve been at this podcasting thing for over a decade now!) will be thrilled by the new format. We’re injecting more of what you love -- the energy and fun that develops when we banter back and forth. Naturally and unscripted! And if you’re brand new to our program: welcome! Thank you for subscribing to the show. We’ll do our very

  • Unjustified Fears That Nearly Stopped Us From Traveling [Season 1, Episode 42]

    28/10/2015 Duration: 08min

Full Show Script EVO: This is it. This is the final mini, interstitial show. Next week, I am stoked to announce, will be the first episode of season two of The Opportunistic Travelers Podcast. SHE: Thank you so much for staying subscribed to the show during our break. We really enjoyed producing these mini episodes, but we're really looking forward to sharing with you the outstanding content we've been collecting the last few months. EVO: November 3rd -- hey, that's my mom's birthday. Happy birthday, Mom! -- is when Season Two starts, and the show goes back to the way it was. Sort of. We're making some changes that hopefully, you won't notice, all designed to make the show that much more enjoyable every week. SHE: On this episode, we're going back to the beginning. Before that, actually, back in November, when we'd made the decision to leave but really had no idea where we were going. We talked about our fears during a road trip to San Diego. [fears] SHE: Getting sick? Check. Four doctor vis

  • How They Cocked Up The Name Of This English Pub [Season 1, Episode 41]

    21/10/2015 Duration: 04min

Full Show Script EVO: Due to our own self-imposed time constraints, I'm not always able to put in all the choice bits we record as we travel. This series of mini, interstitial shows has helped with that, and this week's show is no exception. Beer factors heavily into our travels, which often causes us to seek out iconic watering holes. The search for these hidden gems... SHE: Just stop. [sigh] We were looking for an inn called... The Cock. [sigh] And now, I'll let Evo embrace his inner 12-year-old. Sorry in advance, ladies. Or anyone who's come to expect quality discourse from this show. [the cock] EVO: Astute listeners will notice part of that last bit was used as the intro to our April 15th episode. Now, you have it in context. Cheers from the road! SHE: Funding for our endless world tour is provided, oddly enough, by postcards. EVO: Give us five bucks, and we'll send you a postcard from our travels abroad every single month. Get on the list at ShEvo.wtf/postcards.  SHE: And we save a to

  • Inside Secrets Of A Storytelling Travel Podcast [Season 1, Episode 40]

    14/10/2015 Duration: 03min

Full Show Script EVO: In case I haven't said it loud enough, putting together episodes in our format takes a lot of time. We're now 10 weeks into our between-seasons break, and I'm racking up multiple hours of audio to log. Oy. Who thought this was a good idea? SHE: As much as Evo bitches about it, he really does enjoy going through all the audio we record, looking for choice bits to share with you. What drives him mad is when we've just had an amazing experience... and the microphones weren't running. To help with that, he's come up with a Rule: [ARE] EVO: So that I'm holding myself accountable, I made that statement back in April. We're getting better, but there's still plenty that goes unrecorded. Which sucks for you. Maybe you should just come travel with us. Yes, that's an option. Cheers from the road! SHE: Funding for our endless world tour is provided, oddly enough, by postcards. EVO: Give us five bucks, and we'll send you a postcard from our travels abroad every single month. Get on

  • Can Beer Boost Your Language Skills? [Season 1, Episode 39]

    07/10/2015 Duration: 04min

Full Show Script EVO: Gotta say, going through all this old, unreleased audio has been a lot of fun. I get a chance to relive some fun memories and pick out the choice bits for you. I hope you're enjoying it. Thanks for giving us a chance to spend our time collecting audio for our second season. SHE: When we were in Galcia, we spent some quality time with Jose and Manu, the two guys who run Beer Lab in Santiago de Compostela. We've featured audio of them before, but this never-aired clip is about regional languages, not beer. Though we might have all had a few pints at this point in the evening. We pick up the conversation where Jose was talking about how much longer the US has been a part of the craft beer scene than Galicia... [Language barrier] EVO: I've no idea what Manu was talking about towards the end. ¿Habla español?, I got. The rest? No idea. But we share the language of good craft beer. Cheers from the road! SHE: Funding for our endless world tour is provided, oddly enough, by postc

  • Thailand's Deadly Roads: Why You Can't Fail To Pass [Season 1, Episode 38]

    30/09/2015 Duration: 06min

Full Show Script EVO: Another week, and another mini, interstitial episode from us, just to whet your appetite until season two starts, which will be quite soon. I promise! Stay subscribed to the feed. You'll love it. SHE: Right now, we've got an international drivers license. But at some point, should we decide to settle down in one area and really live the expat lifestyle, we'll have to get a local driver's license. Here's Franck & Camille, our Thailand hosts, explaining how that works in Thailand. [The code] EVO: And that explains why Thailand ranks 3rd in the world of most traffic fatalities per capita. I wonder if they call the policy "No Driver Left Behind"? Cheers from the road! SHE: Funding for our endless world tour is provided, oddly enough, by postcards. EVO: Give us five bucks, and we'll send you a postcard from our travels abroad every single month. Get on the list at ShEvo.wtf/postcards.  SHE: And we save a ton of money by housesitting. It's free and beats living in hotel

  • The ONLY Two Things You Need To Travel The World [Season 1, Episode 37]

    23/09/2015 Duration: 03min

Full Show Script EVO: For seven weeks now, we've been releasing previously unreleased field clips as mini-episodes, keeping you fed with at least some content while we work on our second season. This week, is no exception. SHE: But we will get a little philosophical with you. As we were leaving Spain -- literally on the bus to the airport --  we struck up a conversation with Amanda, a fellow traveler. She had questions, and left us with some sage advice [stuff] EVO: And that's really all that's needed for a life of travel. Assuming there's nothing preventing you from leaving, obviously. But... yeah. Money & a passport. Go. Cheers from SE Asia! It's free and beats living in hotels. Want super cool people like us looking a

  • This Stinks! Mysterious Rolling Rubber Found In Thailand [Season 1, Episode 36]

    16/09/2015 Duration: 04min

Full Show Script EVO: Greetings from the past! While we're busy collecting content for the second season of The Opportunistic Traveler's podcast, we're releasing some previously un-aired clips as to not leave you hanging. SHE: Like this one. Rubber trees are a big crop in Thailand. In this clip, we stop at one roadside rubber tree grove and inspect the raw product. The third voice you'll hear is Camille, our host for the three months we spent in Thailand. [rubber trees] EVO: Every time we drive by a grove, which is any time we leave town, I can't help but sing "Everyone knows an ant can't move a rubber tree plant". Thanks for that 40+ year old ear bug, Mom. Cheers from... oh, let's just go with southeast Asia. That's probably accurate. SHE: Funding for our endless world tour is provided, oddly enough, by postcards. EVO: Give us five bucks, and we'll send you a postcard from our travels abroad every single month. Get on the list at ShEvo.wtf/postcards. SHE: And we save a ton of money by hou

  • Delightful & Mouth-Watering Food Found On The Side Of The Road [Season 1, Episode 35]

    09/09/2015 Duration: 04min

Full Show Script EVO: Yep, we're still betwixt seasons, and you're still getting an un-aired clip from our recent travels around the world, this time from the party-party island of Koh Phayam, just a short ferry ride from Ranong. SHE: Well, if 2 hours is short. In this clip, Evo and I returned a motor bike and had lunch across the street at an unmarked kitchen. Which isn't all that unusual in Thailand. Fair warning, you might want to eat before listening further. [a little chili goes a long way] EVO: Full episodes will start up again in the fall. Our mailing list is the best way to keep up with our current experiences while we're on break. You can sign up at Shevo.wtf. Cheers from... gods, I have no idea where are now. Seriously. Get on the mailing list. SHE: Funding for our endless world tour is provided, oddly enough, by postcards. • How To Avoid A Beat Down At The Danish Bar Billiards Table [Season 1, Episode 34]

    02/09/2015 Duration: 05min

Full Show Script EVO: We're still between seasons, here at The Opportunistic Traveler's podcast, but still have plenty of unreleased audio to share with you while we work on Season Two content. SHE: When we were in Denmark, we noticed two things: Beer is expensive, and their version of pool is really, really strange. Here's our friend Jens, a Danish national who's lived in Thailand the last few decades, explaining how it's played. [bar billiards explained] EVO: You also heard Steve, the Australian, and Neil, the Englishman. (At least I think thats' who they were. I can't hear, as you've heard.)They're all long-term expats who made our time in Thailand special. Thanks fellas. And thanks to you, our listeners. We'll be back next week. Cheers from... China? Yeah, probably still China. SHE: Funding for our endless world tour is provided, oddly enough, by postcards. • Our Scary Up-Close Encounter With A Cave Crammed Full Of Bats! [Season 1, Episode 33]

    26/08/2015 Duration: 04min

Full Show Script EVO: I'm going to apologize now. If you're squeamish about bats, this unreleased clip from our travels in Thailand is going to freak you all the way out.  SHE: He's not joking. About 50 kilometers north of Ranong is Phra Khayang, or just the Bat Cave. I know what you're thinking: All caves have bats. True. But this cave -- which you walk through unsupervised -- lets you get up close and personal with the flying mammals. You were warned. [Bat cave] EVO: Now assuming that didn't cost us all of our listeners, thanks again for sticking with us while we're on season break. We'll be back next week with another mini-episode. And our regular episodes will resume in the fall. Cheers from... wherever we are. Which is probably Hong Kong, by now. SHE: Funding for our endless world tour is provided, oddly enough, by postcards. EVO: Give us five bucks, and we'll send you a postcard from our travels abroad every single month. Get on the list at ShEvo.wtf/postcards.  SHE: And we save a to

  • Is The Beauty Of Thailand's Cities More Than Skin Deep? [Season 1, Episode 32]

    19/08/2015 Duration: 04min

Full Show Script EVO: Hey, thanks for hanging in there with us as we're in between seasons. This week, we're taking you back about a month with an another un-aired clip from our adventures in Thailand, where we've been the last 3 months.  SHE: We half expected our quick trip to Phuket in July to be not all that much different than the time we'd spent in Ranong. We were pretty wrong about that, as you'll hear in this conversation we recorded in a bar near Karon Beach: [Phuket caucazoids] EVO: Just calling it like I see it, baby. And those Russians were really white! Cheers from Thailand! • How To Keep Your Beer Ice Cold In Thailand [Season 1, Episode 31]

    12/08/2015 Duration: 03min

Full Show Script EVO: Our travel itinerary over the next few months is going to be a little on the crazy side, with a half dozen countries on our agenda. That doesn't leave us a lot of time to be stationary and produce a new quality episode for you each week. Instead, we're going to focus on capturing content. Content we'll share with you as part of the second season of The Opportunistic Travelers Podcast this fall. SHE: But don't worry: We're not leaving you without weekly content. And we're not re-running old episodes. We've collected lots of audio over the last seven months (holy shit, seven months) that hasn't made it on our weekly show, simply due to our self-imposted time limit. EVO: Starting in about 30 seconds, you'll get one previously unreleased clip from our past experiences, and then we'll end the episode. And that will continue every week until we come back with full episodes in the fall. SHE: Like this one, that showcases how Thai people keep their beer from going hot. Trigger warn
