Dr. Foote has worked in the addiction treatment field as a clinician and researcher since the late 1980’s, and has developed a unique motivational treatment approach that incorporates principles of group treatment as well as research-based principles of human behavior change. Previously, Dr. Foote was the Deputy Director of the Division of Alcohol Treatment and Research at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in NYC, as well as a Senior Research Associate at The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University (CASA) in NYC. Dr. Foote also served as Chief of the Smithers Addiction Treatment and Research Center as well as Director of Evaluation and Research between 1994 and 2001.

  Host Monica Richardson will interview Carl Hart (born 1966) is an associate professor of psychology and psychiatry at Columbia University. Hart is known for his research in drug abuse and drug addiction. Hart was the first tenured African American professor of sciences at Columbia University. Carl Hart has won the NAACP Image Award for outstanding literary work and Hart was the first tenured African American professor of sciences at Columbia University. She appeared on Katie Couric with Gabrielle Glaser last summer.

IN 1975 when I first encountered AA, most poeple tried to tell me, AA was more of a "take what you like and leave the rest" kinda thing.  What a bait and switch racket they had going on. In fact when I think back, many of the successful oldtimers, with rattling coins in their pockets and Cadillacs in the parking lots gave us that impression. Even those who were poor seemed to have something at stake to make me stay as an 18 or 21 year old...the years I doubted I belonged. But once they 13 stepped me, broke me down with their arm chair pop pschology and said I was hooked, they swiftly gave me positions that no 20 year old with 2 years of sobriety should have been given. I was DCM for Honolulu then, and then they made me PI for the State, sending me off to Lawyers Conferences to attract lawyers to AA...wow ...The facts are, AA's literature is filled with 500 or more crazy references to GOD sugar coated with higher power phrases and wacky "you must or you'll DIE!!!" Lance Dodes, M.D. is a Training and Supervising Analyst Emeritus with the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute and was assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School (retired). He has been the Director of the substance abuse treatment unit of Harvard’s McLean Hospital, Director of the Alcoholism Treatment Unit at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital (now part of Massachusetts General Hospital) and Director of the Boston Center for Problem Gambling. He annually chairs the discussion group The Patient witih Addiction in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis at the fall meeting of the American Psychoanalytic Association.
