I’m Rabbi Shaya Sussman, sharing words of chizuk and emunah as they relate to Tehilim, tefilah, and Chanukah. The days of Chanukah are days of hoda’ah- gratitude. We give thanks to Hashem for all He’s done for us both as a collective nation and as specific individuals. During the Haneros Halalu prayer immediately after lighting the menorah, we say that the eight days of Chanukah were established k’dey lahodos u’lahallel es Shimcha hagadol - to express gratitude and thanks to God’s great Name. Rebbe Nachman explains, in his sefer Lekutei Maran, that the more you give thanks to someone, the closer you are to that person. By recognizing and appreciating the goodness that person did for you, the closer the relationship becomes. When we give hoda’a to Hashem, the Master of the world, therefore, the closer we become to Him. The more you recognize Him, the more you can feel His Presence. E

Tehilim: Chanukah Special, Chanukah and the Black Abyss. The Torah begins with: בְּרֵאשִׁ֖ית בָּרָ֣א אֱלֹהִ֑ים אֵ֥ת הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וְאֵ֥ת הָאָֽרֶץ׃ וְהָאָ֗רֶץ הָיְתָ֥ה תֹ֙הוּ֙ וָבֹ֔הוּ וְחֹ֖שֶׁךְ עַל־פְּנֵ֣י תְה֑וֹם וְר֣וּחַ אֱלֹהִ֔ים מְרַחֶ֖פֶת עַל־פְּנֵ֥י הַמָּֽיִם׃ When God began to create heaven and earth—the earth being unformed and void, with darkness over the surface of the abyss and a wind from God sweeping over the water… Chazal explain that the words וְהָאָ֗רֶץ הָיְתָ֥ה תֹ֙הוּ֙ וָבֹ֔הוּ וְחֹ֖שֶׁךְ עַל־פְּנֵ֣י תְה֑וֹThe earth was unformed and void, with darkness over the surface of the tahom- abyss are reference to the four exiles that will take place throughout the course of world history. The last of the expressions is the word tahom, black abyss. Tahom means a never ending pit, something that is so long, so dark, that you can never reach the bottom of it. Chazal continue to explain that tahom corresponds to the last galus, Edom, the exile in which we’re currently living. This galus has been long

לְדָוִ֨ד ׀ שָׁפְטֵ֤נִי יְהוָ֗ה כִּֽי־אֲ֭נִי בְּתֻמִּ֣י הָלַ֑כְתִּי וּבַיהוָ֥ה בָּ֝טַ֗חְתִּי לֹ֣א אֶמְעָֽד׃ Of David. Vindicate me, O LORD, for I have walked without blame; I have trusted in the LORD; I have not faltered. 2 בְּחָנֵ֣נִי יְהוָ֣ה וְנַסֵּ֑נִי צרופה [צָרְפָ֖ה] כִלְיוֹתַ֣י וְלִבִּֽי׃ Probe me, O LORD, and try me, test my heart and mind; 3 כִּֽי־חַ֭סְדְּךָ לְנֶ֣גֶד עֵינָ֑י וְ֝הִתְהַלַּ֗כְתִּי בַּאֲמִתֶּֽךָ׃ for my eyes are on Your steadfast love; I have set my course by it. 4 לֹא־יָ֭שַׁבְתִּי עִם־מְתֵי־שָׁ֑וְא וְעִ֥ם נַ֝עֲלָמִ֗ים לֹ֣א אָבֽוֹא׃ I do not consort with scoundrels, or mix with hypocrites; 5 שָׂ֭נֵאתִי קְהַ֣ל מְרֵעִ֑ים וְעִם־רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים לֹ֣א אֵשֵֽׁב׃ I detest the company of evil men, and do not consort with the wicked; 6 אֶרְחַ֣ץ בְּנִקָּי֣וֹן כַּפָּ֑י וַאֲסֹבְבָ֖ה אֶת־מִזְבַּחֲךָ֣ יְהוָֽה׃ I wash my hands in innocence, and walk around Your altar, O LORD, 7 לַ֭שְׁמִעַ בְּק֣וֹל תּוֹדָ֑ה וּ֝לְסַפֵּ֗ר כָּל־נִפְלְאוֹתֶֽיךָ׃ raising my voice in thanksgiving, and telling all Your wonders. 8 יְֽה

לְדָוִ֨ד ׀ יְהוָ֤ה ׀ אוֹרִ֣י וְ֭יִשְׁעִי מִמִּ֣י אִירָ֑א יְהוָ֥ה מָֽעוֹז־חַ֝יַּ֗י מִמִּ֥י אֶפְחָֽד׃ Of David. The LORD is my light and my help; whom should I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life, whom should I dread? 2 בִּקְרֹ֤ב עָלַ֨י ׀ מְרֵעִים֮ לֶאֱכֹ֪ל אֶת־בְּשָׂ֫רִ֥י צָרַ֣י וְאֹיְבַ֣י לִ֑י הֵ֖מָּה כָשְׁל֣וּ וְנָפָֽלוּ׃ When evil men assail me to devour my flesh— it is they, my foes and my enemies, who stumble and fall. 3 אִם־תַּחֲנֶ֬ה עָלַ֨י ׀ מַחֲנֶה֮ לֹֽא־יִירָ֪א לִ֫בִּ֥י אִם־תָּק֣וּם עָ֭לַי מִלְחָמָ֑ה בְּ֝זֹ֗את אֲנִ֣י בוֹטֵֽחַ׃ Should an army besiege me, my heart would have no fear; should war beset me, still would I be confident. 4 אַחַ֤ת ׀ שָׁאַ֣לְתִּי מֵֽאֵת־יְהוָה֮ אוֹתָ֪הּ אֲבַ֫קֵּ֥שׁ שִׁבְתִּ֣י בְּבֵית־יְ֭הוָה כָּל־יְמֵ֣י חַיַּ֑י לַחֲז֥וֹת בְּנֹֽעַם־יְ֝הוָ֗ה וּלְבַקֵּ֥ר בְּהֵיכָלֽוֹ׃ One thing I ask of the LORD, only that do I seek: to live in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD, to frequent His temple. 5 כִּ֤י יִצְפְּנֵ֨נִי ׀ בְּסֻכֹּה֮ בְּי

Tehilim Chapeter 25 לְדָוִ֡ד אֵלֶ֥יךָ יְ֝הוָ֗ה נַפְשִׁ֥י אֶשָּֽׂא׃ Of David. Tehilim chapter 24 לְדָוִ֗ד מִ֫זְמ֥וֹר לַֽ֭יהוָה הָאָ֣רֶץ וּמְלוֹאָ֑הּ תֵּ֝בֵ֗ל וְיֹ֣שְׁבֵי בָֽהּ׃ Of David. A psalm. The earth is the LORD’s and all that it holds, the world and its inhabitants. 2 כִּי־ה֭וּא עַל־יַמִּ֣ים יְסָדָ֑הּ וְעַל־נְ֝הָר֗וֹת יְכוֹנְנֶֽהָ׃ For He founded it upon the ocean, set it on the nether-streams. 3 מִֽי־יַעֲלֶ֥ה בְהַר־יְהוָ֑ה וּמִי־יָ֝קוּם בִּמְק֥וֹם קָדְשֽׁוֹ׃ Who may ascend the mountain of the LORD? Who may stand in His holy place?— 4 נְקִ֥י כַפַּ֗יִם וּֽבַר־לֵ֫בָ֥ב אֲשֶׁ֤ר ׀ לֹא־נָשָׂ֣א לַשָּׁ֣וְא נַפְשִׁ֑י וְלֹ֖א נִשְׁבַּ֣ע לְמִרְמָֽה׃ He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not taken a false oath by My life or sworn deceitfully. 5 יִשָּׂ֣א בְ֭רָכָה מֵאֵ֣ת יְהוָ֑ה וּ֝צְדָקָ֗ה מֵאֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׁעֽוֹ׃ He shall carry away a blessing from the LORD, a just reward from God, his deliverer. 6 זֶ֭ה דּ֣וֹר דרשו [דֹּרְשָׁ֑יו] מְבַקְשֵׁ֨י פָנֶ֖יךָ יַעֲקֹ֣ב סֶֽלָה׃ Such is the circle of those who turn to Him, Jacob, who seek Your presence.Selah. 7 שְׂא֤וּ שְׁעָרִ֨ים ׀ רָֽאשֵׁ

The LORD is my shepherd; I lack nothing. 2 בִּנְא֣וֹת דֶּ֭שֶׁא יַרְבִּיצֵ֑נִי עַל־מֵ֖י מְנֻח֣וֹת יְנַהֲלֵֽנִי׃ He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me to water in places of repose; 3 נַפְשִׁ֥י יְשׁוֹבֵ֑ב יַֽנְחֵ֥נִי בְמַעְגְּלֵי־צֶ֝֗דֶק לְמַ֣עַן שְׁמֽוֹ׃ He renews my life; He guides me in right paths as befits His name. 4 גַּ֤ם כִּֽי־אֵלֵ֨ךְ בְּגֵ֪יא צַלְמָ֡וֶת לֹא־אִ֘ירָ֤א רָ֗ע כִּי־אַתָּ֥ה עִמָּדִ֑י שִׁבְטְךָ֥ וּ֝מִשְׁעַנְתֶּ֗ךָ הֵ֣מָּה יְנַֽחֲמֻֽנִי׃ Though I walk through a valley of deepest darkness, I fear no harm, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff—they comfort me. 5 תַּעֲרֹ֬ךְ לְפָנַ֨י ׀ שֻׁלְחָ֗ן נֶ֥גֶד צֹרְרָ֑י דִּשַּׁ֖נְתָּ בַשֶּׁ֥מֶן רֹ֝אשִׁ֗י כּוֹסִ֥י רְוָיָֽה׃ You spread a table for me in full view of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my drink is abundant. 6 אַ֤ךְ ׀ ט֤וֹב וָחֶ֣סֶד יִ֭רְדְּפוּנִי כָּל־יְמֵ֣י חַיָּ֑י וְשַׁבְתִּ֥י בְּבֵית־יְ֝הוָ֗ה לְאֹ֣רֶךְ יָמִֽים׃ Only goodness and steadfast love
