Andy Greder covers the Loons and the Gophers for the Pioneer Press. He does not own a rain gauge because he is not ready to become his father. The Gopher football opener is right around the corner and Drake Lindsey will be under center leading the offense. Andy talks about some of the early adjustments he’s shown in practice and camp. They also get into Koi Perich’s positional split on offense and defense. Andy think they will keep their fun stuff under wraps in non-conference play but expects Perich to be more than a gimmick presence on the offense. Steve asks about the fines and suspensions levied against the University of Michigan for their less than compliant National Championship season. Steve and Andy also get into some Loons talk and the frustration in not receiving any players during the transfer window while sending talent out during their more than solid season.

The meeting of the Steve’s commences on a very rainy Saturday night. Carney has had enough of this weird summer of weather. He says the fishing is just okay and that he’s waiting for things to cool off. In the meantime, he’s been helping a nearby sanctuary with some problematic deer. The transition to the fall cannot come fast enough. He’s been scouting deer stand spots and in the process desensitizing the nearby wildlife to his presence. The Twins have been winning some games despite trading away much of their roster at the deadline. Phil and Steve talk about Joe Ryan’s experience around the deadline and how it feels in the locker room after so much change in so little time. As jarring as the trade deadline was, Phil thinks there were four months of not so inspiring baseball that led to so much upheaval. He also touches on unique ailments that some players are dealing with.

Fishing has really slowed and Carney is waiting for the water temperature to change. He predicts it to be slow until October mostly because of all the food available to the fish that’s making it difficult to reel them into the boat.

Mike details the preparation the site goes through each year to get the grounds ready to host the event. Steve also gets into the risk/reward dynamic present at hole 18.

Steve Carney is trying some new techniques in coaxing fishes into his boat and its tiring him out. Bait elevation is key. Carney notes that he’s jumping lakes a lot right now given the slow time of year.
