Last month I was in Berlin for business. But every visit in another city is an opportunity to for me to explore the local communities and initiatives. Luckly, I had the pleasure to meet Katharina Brendel, the Co-founder of CoWomen, Berlin’s community club & coworking space for women. She is also a podcaster and a speaker and she spent a lot of time moving and living in different countries. We spoke about the reason she and her co-founders had the idea of CoWomen, their future plans, tips for a successful event and why men are not part of this specific party. ROI is a global jewish community of young individuals that want to make an impact. If you ever tried to get in to the ROI community you probably know that only a member’s referral can give you access to application. Once you get in you are a part of this special community and have access to other members and funds supported be the Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation This week I hosted Elissa Krycer, the community manager of ROI in the past 8 years (!). Elissa  grew up in Australia as an active member of the Zionist youth groups where she became a madricha and then State Director of her movement. Elissa made aliyah 12 years ago and within days she started on the road to qualifying as an Israeli lawyer. While commercial law was interesting, Elissa made the next most logical move (for an Anglo in Jerusalem) and went into nonprofit. What community has to do with business? This week I hosted Sarah Drinkwater. Sarah is director at the Tech and Society Solutions Lab at Omidyar Network, where she works to test and scale interventions that help maximize the tech industry’s positive contributions to a healthy society. Prior to Omidyar Network, Sarah was head of Google Campus London. Campus London was a pilot that has since scaled to six locations around the world, including Tel Aviv. At Google, Sarah also built and led a global Google Maps community team. How do you manage a 3 million member online community and programs? This week I hosted @Erica Kuhl, VP Community at Salesforce. Erica has been working at Salesforce in the past 17 (!) years and started the customer online Trailblazer Community from scratch over 12 years ago and today it’s a thriving strategic differentiator for the company and a world-class industry community standard. Erica told me about communications methods, the Trailblazer Community, KPI’s for measuring the community and the different programs that help them to be in almost every country in the world. How do you manage community leaders from more than 60 different cities? Meet @Ashley Galleman Williams, Global host community manager at Airbnb, one of the biggest community based companies. In the past year Ashley is working at airbnb, Launched and leads the Experience Community Leaders program, Manages the strategy and content for 50+ Facebook groups that give experience hosts an online space to connect and share advice and Oversees a global events strategy bringing hosts together face-to-face in 60+ cities. I asked Ashley What makes Airbnb’s community a community and how she communicates with so many hosts and why Facebook is working so well for them. We talked about how the community drives the growth of the company and the Experience Community Leaders program and why big companies need one. After 71 podcast episodes, it happened. I had a technical issue during the recording and I lost the content. Thank god my guest was Amazing Danyelle Ludwig Pollock and a few days later we recorded the whole thing again! I had the pleasure to host Danyelle on a live event at Facebook Tel Aviv while she was visiting Israel. Danyelle most recently headed up internal communications & events at Lyft , a transportation technology company in San Francisco valued at $15 billion. As employee #61, she helped lead the Community team, became a founding member of Lyft’s internal Culture Board, and assisted the company in navigating 50x employee growth. Danyelle is currently on an international tour, visiting tech hubs around the world and providing consultations to startups of all sizes. When you meet Cepee you get this kind of energy and you know what is the DNA of a true community leader. She is an American living in Madrid and I think that her number one challenge was to create her own community in a new city, new county. Actually this lead eventually to her super unique and international community - She hit refresh, It’s a community for women over age 30 who want to break free from routine and start a life of travel. With an upcoming retreat in Morocco I can understand why Cepee has this spark in her eyes when she talks about her community. Is it possible to keep a strong and active community without an online platform? Oh yeah! Meet Mali Baum, Founding Partner and CEO of W lounge, founding partner at magda future funding fund. Mali built a community supporting women & diversity in business and technology in Berlin and expanded to Israel (Tel Aviv), the US (Silicon Valley, New York) and China. She was nominated for the Digital Female Leader Award 2017 by Women in Digital. Mali is a regular speaker at conferences, is a mentor and jury member of startup competitions. So how come this community thrive without an online platform? Moving to a different county is hard. It’s even harder to leave your local community and start from scratch. Elinor Honigstein, Israeli-born,living in London for the past 16 years with her German husband and 3 girls was my guest this week. Elinor has been part of the core team who set up the community programme at the largest Jewish Cultural Centre in Europe, JW3. We talked about both her personal experience of being a foreigner and about her job as Head of Community Programme at JW3, bringing people together for their love of art, drama, storytelling; a shared language; a common stage of life; geographical proximity; a similar country of origin, and engaging them with the centre and its programme. Elinor’s passion is in supporting foreign-born local communities, particularly the Israelis and Russians who live in London, and creating a positive impact on their lives. A special live episode recorded this week on stage of Facebook Communities event in Tel Aviv with Anna Bofa, Head of Community Partnerships at Facebook. Anna explained about the vision of Facebook’s global program CLC, Community leaders circles (which I lead in Israel together with Rafi Barbiro). Japanese culture is beautiful and so different. I found that Japanese people can be very shy. How can you create communities and bring people together in a place like Tokyo? This week I had the pleasure to host Ami Matsuzawa, a community manager at Facebook Japan and an amazing entrepreneur. Ami told me about LunchTrip, a community she built around food from all over the world, inspiration from pinterest (her previous job) and her new job at Facebook.
