#12 Breaking Generational Cycles of Violence: How Angela Rivera Fought for Her Daughter’s Life and Became an Unintended Advocate for Domestic Violence Survivors
24/03/2019 Duration: 58minOn this episode, I talk with Angela Rivera. Angela is a natural food chef, certified meditation coach, children’s yoga instructor, and mother of four. She is a survivor of domestic violence and in 2018, discovered that her 19 year-old daughter was in an emotionally and physically abusive relationship. After her daughter survived a life threatening attack, Angela, dissatisfied with law enforcement’s response, took her advocacy for her daughter to Albany, New York, where she urged a state senator to draft legislation that would make the reporting of incidents of domestic violence easier for victims; Angela has since continued her advocacy. She has also developed programming to introduce and encourage meditation to the law enforcement community. She went on to become winner of the 2017-2018 Ms. Illinois American Elegance pageant and spearheaded the resurgence of the organization she founded in 2008, Moms Can Do It 2 which provides clothing and other basic necessities to single mothers and their children in and around Chicago, Illinois. LaSonya has written her first book, a memoir, and looks forward to its publication.
