Floris van Hees (1978) and Ivar Smits (1974) were deeply concerned about climate breakdown, biodiversity loss, pollution, and social inequality. It had become increasingly clear to them that humanity was facing an existential ecological and social crisis that demanded a drastic change of course. But what could that new course be? To find out, they quit their jobs and left Amsterdam in 2016 to sail around the world on their renovated sailboat Lucipara 2. As Sailors for Sustainability, they made it their mission to find solutions that could accelerate the transition to an ecologically sustainable and socially just society. Eight years later they had circumnavigated the world and returned home. Vinterseilasen blir bare mer og mer populær. I år var det 43 påmeldte båter til starten fra Bolærne på den siste dagen i februar. De fikk en veldig lett bris og en sol som varmet på ferden mot Strømstad. Drømmer skal gjennomføres og livet skal leves. Erling Haugnes kastet loss fra Norge i romjulen for å seile i et år. Turen går sydover gjennom mørke, stormer og snø helt alene med sin 40 foter. Vi snakket med ham mens han lå værfast på sørkysten av England.  Snart skal han seile solo over Atlanterhavet. Petter Mowinckel er en veldig erfaren seiler som har vært innom det meste fra jolle til havseilere siden han først kastet loss i 1969. I tillegg har han konstruert båter, bygget båter og bygget på  båter - noe han gjør nå på sin katamaran. Vinterprosjektet til den driftige seileren er å forlenge båten med en fot. No one has inspired more sailors to cross oceans than Jimmy Cornell. It is 40 years since he founded Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC). Now, he has launched a new concept: High Latitude Challenge, which will take adventurous sailors in his wake to the Antarctic and through the North West passage.   He launched the challenge at the end of last year and already has over 30 boats interested for the start in 2026. Katharina Kneip travels around the world in the northern latitude by foot, ski, kayak, packraft, and sailing with her project Round:Motion. This year she made it from Kirkenes to Iceland via Tromsø and Svalbard. She is spending the winter herding sheep in Iceland and trying to find a boat that is sailing to Canada next year. Linn Charlotte Klund og Paul Lübbe har seilt jorden rundt i en eller annen form siden 2013, og de har på ingen måte tenkt til å bli landfaste. Nå er de i full gang med ekspedisjonsselskapet Wicked Horizon og har store planer. Helga Maria Løvenskiold Kveseth, også kjent som Mara, har seilt mange mil. I 2026 skal hun seile enda flere. Ben Ruffieux has taken his green vision for the ocean to Greenland. His 50 feet racing aluminum sailing boat has been converted into a fully electric expedition boat in the Arctic. The film Going Greenland at the Banff Mountain Film Festival this year inspired me to make a podcast with Ben. Jon Amtrup, that's me your podcast host, got the opportunity to sail as skipper on the Greenpeace high latitude sailingboat Witness, the former Pelagic Australis, this autumn. With scientists and campaigners we sailed from Bergen to Svalbard in the same area the Norwegian government desperately want to start deep-sea mining. Than we documented glacier melting around Ny-Ålesund before we returned to mainland Norway. We even managed a quick lunch-stop in Lerwick, Shetland. Ella Hibbert (27) decided to postpone her North Pole circumnavigation and set out on a cruise North to Svalbard to test her boat and her self. We met her in Longyearbyen, Svalbard to catch up.  This is her mission in 2025 «She will be sailing from Haslar Marina, in the Solent, up the East coast of England, to a start point on the 66.5°N latitude of the Arctic Circle between Norway and Iceland. Then, around Iceland, southern Greenland, the NorthWest Passage through Canada, across Northern Alaska, and into Russian waters. Crossing the Laptev and Kara seas (NorthEast Passage) and eventually back to her starting point near Norway, before heading down the coastline of the UK again to set foot ashore, for the first time since leaving, back in her home base of Haslar Marina, England. « The Arctic expedition has been officially endorsed by the Scientific Exploration Society.   You can, and you should follow her and maybe support her. Martin Larsen har drømt om å seile jorden rundt non-stop alene. Når sommeren er over kaster kan loss for å gjøre drømmen til virkelighet. Gate to the Arctic is a non-profit run på Catharina Frostad and Jon Amtrup, host of this podcast. In June we filled Moondance, a beautiful Koopmans 56 from Moondance Expeditions, with youth, scientists, and storytellers and sailed North from Tromsø. We took samples of air, the ocean, freshwater lakes, snow, and fish on our way. We also collected nearly a ton of plastic debris on our way. I 2022 to Lars Marius Leine en prøvetur over Atlanterhavet med et vennepar. Det ble det podcast av. Jasmine, Joanna, and Guy Clegg sold their farm on the south coast of England and replaced it with a beautiful Koopmans 39. Now they are sailing full-time, and spreading knowledge and inspiration thorugh Jasmine's YouTube channel Sailing Free Spirit. They have explored the Hebrides, Faroes, and are now in Norway after arriving well above the Arctic Circle last year.
