Synopsis
Friar Simão lives in silence and penance until his death, without ever revealing his past. Only after his death does a manuscript reveal the tragic story of a forbidden love, misfortune, and guilt that led him to isolation in the convent. Machado de Assis creates a melancholy story about the weight of choices and the impossibility of forgetting.
