079: Find Your Forever- With Guest Shamira Rothmiller
09/09/2019 Duration: 36minIf you look at a track and field team you will see a group of different people who all bring different gifts to the team. The throwers are usually larger in stature and stronger. The pole vaulters typically don’t have that same strength and size. If a thrower tried to compete in the pole volt it would probably put them at a disadvantage based on their body type. All of us have innate talents and skills that allow us to do certain things well. We mess up when we try to copy the next person instead of being true to ourselves. We have to figure out were to operate and how to maximize our gifts. When we play our role not just in sports but in life, everyone wins. 076: Mindfulness- With Guest Leah Lipschitz
26/08/2019 Duration: 23minWhen we walk away from our sport we often feel as if we have lost a huge part of ourselves. We tend to feel as is we have lost our purpose once our sport no longer defines us. As athletes its seems counter intuitive but it is through slowing down that we notice more. We have to seek out ways to find balance especially in today’s hyper connected society. We don’t give ourselves an opportunity to stop and pay attention. Mindfulness practices like yoga and meditation can prove to be extremely beneficial to former athletes as we seek to find some sense of balance. 075: The Access Card- With Guest Jacolby Gilliam
19/08/2019 Duration: 23minAs athletes we all have similar dreams coming up. We envisioned ourselves playing for our favorite professional or collegiate teams. Because we were so focused on our sport we didn’t adequately prepare for the next chapter of life. As we begin to navigate next steps we lose our “access card” in a sense. For so long we received special privileges because we were athletes. As we navigate new arenas we find ourselves in unfamiliar territory where people simply don’t care about what we accomplished on the field or on the court. 074: Go Against The Grain With Guest Tobias Pinson
12/08/2019 Duration: 16minIt is so important to take the time to reflect on your past experiences and figure out what sort of solutions you can provide to those in need. That is exactly what this week’s special guest did when he started Hoop Juice. Hoop Juice is a recruiting service designed to help women’s basketball players of all levels find a place to play basketball and continue their education. As former athletes it can be hard to figure out who you want to be and what you want to be as your life has revolved around your sport for years. You have to get uncomfortable and put yourself in situations that will allow you to find other things that may interest you. 073: More Than X's and O's- With Guest Dr. Emmett Gill
05/08/2019 Duration: 48minThis is an episode unlike any other. We talk about the intersection between social work and sports. Social workers are advocates and activists who can help athletes in a variety of ways. Social workers help people who experience everyday problems and they help people who are in crisis. Social workers can help athletes navigate life events so that they can be the best people they can be. Social workers need a seat at the table along with sports psychologists in order to give our athletes the holistic development they need. In this episode we also talk about the plethora of issues our black student-athletes face from a social workers perspective. Many black student-athletes come from challenging backgrounds where they were raised in one parent or no parent homes. Some deal with bouts of homelessness while others have to face gun violence. Somehow in spite of their circumstances they find their way onto a college campus. In many instances they are unprepared for the coursework but it is difficult for them to fin

072: New Layers- With Guest Khadija Head
29/07/2019 Duration: 29min“We play twenty plus games a year. Every third night we are either going to experience success or failure and that’s a tough way to live.” -Khadija Head As athletes we often tie our entire identity to gravity. If the ball goes in we are a success. If the ball doesn’t go in we failed. At some point we have to be intentional about understanding that we are more than our sport. Whenever you unveil a new layer of yourself that has nothing to do with your sport take the time to explore it. It is so important to create margin in your life. By doing that you will begin to see that your sport is just a small portion of who you are as an athlete or a coach. 071: The Glory Days- With Guest Amanda McGrew
22/07/2019 Duration: 32minAfter several failed dating experiences Amanda McGrew decided to become the solution instead of simply complaining about the problem. With all of the niche dating apps for Christians, Vegans, Farmers, and other groups of people Amanda decided she needed to create a dating app for athletes. Athletes have an ability to connect with other athletes in a way that is rare. Part of the struggle as we transition out of sport is finding a new place to add value. It is so important to identify your tribe and find a group of people you can serve. More often than not our sport makes up a huge part of our identity. Many of us are aware that we could be good at something else but fear of the unknown keeps many athletes from exploring and truly tapping into other areas. It is so important to find new things to celebrate and explore. No one wants to be the 35 year old former athlete constantly talking about how they made the All Conference team their junior year of college. Take the time to ask yourself if you have other pa

070: Everyday Is Halloween- With Guest Jeermal Sylvester
15/07/2019 Duration: 39minThe truth is that most athletes don’t envision their careers being over at 22 or even 25 years old. Often times we go to college to play sports and we aren’t necessarily serious about leveraging the opportunity to get a quality education that will allow us to jump-start our career. It can be extremely difficult to cope with the fact that your sport is over and it is not unusual to experience some levels of anxiety or depression. At times we don’t want to even be around the sport we once loved simply because it is too painful. Many former athletes turn to drugs and alcohol in an effort to medicate themselves and numb the pain and avoid the fact that it’s really over. As athletes we create this persona. Many of us have nicknames and we literally transform into our alter ego on the court or field. Unfortunately many of us don’t take the time to get to know ourselves outside of our sport. We talk about this and so much more on this week’s episode. Be sure to connect with Jeermal Sylvester https://www.instagram.co

067: Play To Win- With Guest Ticha Penicheiro
01/07/2019 Duration: 19min“Basketball is what I used to do, not who I am.” As athletes we tend to forget to remind ourselves that life is much bigger than our sport. Many times athletes spend 20 or more years dedicated to their sport and if you aren’t intentional about planning next steps the transition can seem overwhelming. One of the keys to success is to be passionate about what you do. However, if you can become knowledgeable within your sphere of influence and combine that with your passion those two things will allow you to experience success on another level.
