Watching My Stories

After taking a week off, we are back and have lots to catch up on.   This week we talk very quickly through the things that Dhani watched this week, so pay attention as we cover lots of things.   The most exciting start is that we both saw Mary Poppins Returns.  And as much as we were anticipating this movie for so long... it lived up to our expectations!   Next, Dhani flies through the other movies she has watched, including Instant Family, Night School, Ready Player One, and Hunter Killer.  Next, John has caught up on seeing a couple movies that Dhani has covered previously, so we get his input on A Simple Favor and Blockers.   Wrapping up the movie portion, Dhani discusses her disappoint in Netflix's Bird Box.   Next, Dhani and John take a moment to recognize Penny Marshall and her tremendous contributions to TV and film.   Moving on to TV, Dhani quickly talks about the Arrowverse's crossover event this year called Elseworlds.  Next is a docuseries on Netflix called The Innocent Man.  And finally, the joy

Lots to talk about this week, so we jump right into it.   First, Dhani talks about the new Halloween movie and her overall disappointment with most horror movies.  This one included.   Next, she talks about Venom.  She felt it waivers from the usual Marvel formula a bit, but then catches on by the end.  Moving on to Smallfoot, Dhani surprisingly enjoyed this one more than she thought.  Lately animated movies haven't been successful in getting her to stick with the movie, but this one kept her interested!  Finally, we wrap up the movie section with the new Netflix movie, Dumplin'.  This was a typical message movie telling girls to love themselves no matter what, but it was entertaining and the characters were lovable and we care about them from the start.   Moving on to TV, John and Dhani superfan out on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.  The second season just came out and they binged it and fell in love all over again.  Sorry for going on about this show, but we love it so much.  Next, we talk about another show th

This week was filled with lots of movie-watching!   First, Dhani talks about The Grinch and how she was disappointed with the changes they made to the core story.  Probably entertaining for kids, but not for those that love the original.  Next, Dhani talks about The House With A Clock In Its Walls.  She was pleasantly surprised by this movie and how entertaining and intriguing the story was!  She thinks this is due to Eli Roth's direction, but also the performances were believable in an unbelievable world!  Enjoyable film for all to see! Next, Dhani watched The Happytime Murders.  Yes, this has puppets... no, it's not for kids.  But, Dhani found this movie really, really funny and thought the story was much better than she thought it would be! This week, even though it is after Thanksgiving, we will spend some time on Thanksgiving entertainment.   First, John was able to watch Peppermint, and listen as he explains that he is finally coming around to liking Jennifer Garner.   Next, Dhani talks about the movie The Children Act.  This doesn't take long because she was quite disappointed in the film.  She still loves Emma Thompson, but the movie did not rise to meet her talent.   Then we move on the Netflix movie The Christmas Chronicles starring Kurt Russell as Santa Claus.  Dhani really enjoyed this new take on the story of Santa and teaching kids to believe.   Then John and Dhani finally finished the latest season of the Great British Bake Off and they gush over this amazing season and the bakers on the show.   Last week Dhani forgot to list her favorite Thanksgiving movies, so she lists these even though the holiday is over.  I think they work for the entire holiday season, so perhaps people can still enjoy them for the next few weeks anyway.   And

For a change this week, Dhani doesn't have any movies to talk about... so we focus on a few TV shows and then the Actors' Corner.   First, Dhani talks about the Showtime show called Kidding with Jim Carrey.  Then she discusses the latest season of American Horror Story: Apocalypse.  Next, Dhani watched the new Netflix show The Kominsky Method starring Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin.  Next, it's tough for Dhani to go without talking about her favorite show Blackish and since they hit their 100th episode, plus it was a tribute to Prince, she had to mention it!   Next, we get to the Actors' Corner with Jim Carrey.  We discuss the works of Jim Carrey's that we love, like, hate, secretly love, haven't seen and want to see.   Finally, we reiterate that we are working next week with the podcast Pop Culture Nickel to rank the Top 5 Friends Thanksgiving episodes.  Listen to their podcast the Wednesday before Thanksgiving to hear their Top 5, and then the Sunday after Thanksgiving, John and Dhani will compare their Top

This week was a very long week in real life... and it appears that this spilled over into the things that Dhani watched as well.  This episode might seem too political for some listeners, but Dhani really feels that people can learn from TV and Movies, so please listen and make your decision about watching these things.   First, Dhani saw The Hate U Give.  This is a harrowing story about a cop shooting a young, unarmed, black teen.  While we have seen this story in real life way too many times, the movie talks about very important pieces to such a complicated situation.  This is a movie that every person, and especially all young people should watch.   Next, Dhani watched the Netflix special, John Leguizamo's Lating History for Morons.  She learned so much about the Latino history that has been wiped from our textbooks or culture.  This is a very informative, but very funny show that everyone can enjoy.  John Leguizamo is a fantastic teacher and storyteller.   Switching now to TV, Dhani touches on The Purge t

This week starts off with allergies and strange words... but I think we get it together long enough to discuss a few things that were watched this week.   First, Dhani talks about watching the movie The Darkest Minds.  She liked the performances, but the story still lacked a bit of explanation.  Next, Dhani talks about the documentary Three Identical Strangers and the horrific twist that these siblings discover about their lives and adoption story.  It's quite fascinating and everyone should check out this movie.   Next, before moving on to TV, we talk about an exciting cross-promotion we are doing with another podcast called Pop Culture Nickel.  Dhani gave them 5 thanksgiving epsiodes of Friends for them to rank on their podcast before Thanksgiving and then we will compare their rankings to our own.  Listen to their promo and check them out! We are back this week with only a few things to talk about... but hang on for our picks of scary movies just in time for Halloween! We start off discussing the new standup special from Adam Sandler called 100% Fresh.  We gush a little too much about this special as we both loved it so much. Next, Dhani talks about a small movie called Juliet, Naked starring Ethan Hawke, Chris O'Dowd, and Rose Byrne.  She enjoyed the story but knows that these types of movies aren't for most people.  Then we both revisit Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again because John has been able to watch it now.  Since Dhani was so crazy about this movie, she was disappointed that John didn't fall in love so quickly... though he tries to convince her that he did enjoy it.   Moving on to TV, Dhani only chose to discuss the BBC and Netflix series Bodyguard.  She talks about the twists and turns in unfolding the story.   Finally, we decide not to do our usual Actors' Corner this week and instead use the same format to discuss our favorite scary movie

No new movies this week... but we still have a lot to talk about with pay-per-view movies and TV!  First, I am getting John caught up on some summer movies that I already saw, so we start with The Spy Who Dumped Me and TAG.  John gives his input on these movies.  And no real surprise, he really enjoyed them both!   Next, I saw Searching and RBG and I give my thoughts on both.  Searching is one of the best mystery movies I have seen in a while and I loved the twists and turns.  And then RBG is a documentary that I recommend to every person in this country.   Moving on to TV, I give my opinion on this season of Better Call Saul.  Then I watched the Netflix show The Haunting of Hill House.  Very creepy, but ultimately a good family story.  Next, I urge everyone to watch Arrow.  This season's opener was so incredibly good and I think if you haven't watched the previous seasons, you could start watching now.  It really is the best show in the Arrowverse.   Since the fall TV season is in full swing, I talk about my

Gearing up for the new TV season, this week we managed to pack a lot into this episode.  First, Dhani was finally able to see the end of The Meg and John saw the movie as well, so we discuss our thoughts on the movie overall.   Next we discuss the Emmys from earlier in the week and excuse our minor heated back and forth on this subject.   This week The Sinner, season 2, ended... so Dhani talks about her disappointment in this season as compared to the brilliant first season.  Some new shows have started that Dhani is in the middle of viewing, so she talks about her first impressions on the following shows:  Kidding, You, AHS: Apocalypse, The First, Maniac, and The Good Cop.  Next we get into a subject that we never have discussed on this podcast before, and this is podcasts.  Dhani recommends Dirty John and the new 3rd season of Serial.  Also, her weekly go-to podcasts of Bitch Sesh, Armchair Expert, and My Favorite Murder.  Finally, Dhani lists the new and returning shows that start this week that she will b

This week was another one for slim pickings in viewing options... but Dhani can always pull together enough to fill an hour!   First she talks about A Simple Favor and how it looked like we were living in Paul Feig's suit.  (Explanation in the podcast.) Not a lot was watched this week, as TV has been very slow lately.... This week Dhani shows off her language skills and invents a new word!  Maybe this is why she spends most of her time watching TV and movies?!?!   Listen as she explains watching The Meg and not being able to see the end as there was a fire alarm evacuation with 20 minutes left to go in the movie!!!!!  Then John joins in as he finally saw Deadpool 2.  Dhani will explain her disappoint in Book Club and happiness in watching Lily James in The Guernsey Literacy and Potato Pie Peel Society. Next, John and Dhani have found their new TV show to watch together in Making It!  Something for the kids... This is a special off-schedule episode with my Mom, Peggy.  As we all know, John does not like to watch or talk about the Real Housewives, so I enlisted my Mom to discuss the drama!  First we dive into some general questions about our favorite and least favorite housewives are as well as our favorite moments in the past and who we would like to return to the franchise.  Then we discuss the current seasons of The Real Housewives of Potomac, The Real Housewives of Orange County, and then we saved the best for last and talked about The Real Housewives of New York.  My mom and I tend to disagree on most of these women and situations... so what better way to explore shows about arguing women than with listening to two more women debate those arguments???  Enjoy!

This week Dhani rants about a new movie on Netflix called How IT Ends.  Listen to her frustration about the name of the movie never explaining how it actually ends!  Then Dhani tried to explain to John about The Handmaid's Tale and why it is the best show, with the best cast, with the best characters... even if it is a cautionary tale for our current times.   Then John joins the conversation in discussing our favorite movie lines that we quote the most often.  And finally, they discuss their favorite Sandra Bullock movies and why.  John chose Speed, always a good choice.  While Dhani chose Hope Floats and While You Were Sleeping.
