What We Discuss with Randolph Nesse: What possible purpose do anxiety, depression, and anger serve from an evolutionary standpoint? Why the body's mechanisms for keeping us safe often overreact, and what we can do to get a handle on them when they work a little too well. The evolutionary upsides to worrying about what other people think of us. Why natural selection shapes our behavior toward reproduction rather than health and longevity. Why do women often go for the reckless mate instead of the safe mate -- and why do men stick around at all? And much more... She is the author of The Joy of Movement, The Willpower Instinct, and The Upside of Stress. What We Discuss with Kelly McGonigal: How much does the way you think about stress affect your health? Contrary to what medical professionals have been telling you for years, can there really be such a thing as good stress? Why trying to shame someone out of a harmful coping mechanism (overeating, smoking, etc.) can generate the very stress that prompts reliance on that mechanism. What we discuss with Bob Saget: The shared age at which Bob Saget and Richard Pryor knew they were funny. How Bob's sense of humor developed as a mechanism to avoid pain. Why Bob has reinvented himself repeatedly over the course of his career -- from the wholesome family man he portrayed on Full House to the dirty lecher he played on Entourage (and all points between). How people make decisions and what poker can tell us about reading human motivation. How to spot real physical tells at the poker table (and real life). How we can control and prevent emotional thinking (aka "going on tilt"). Why, in poker as in life, triumph is your foe, and disaster is where you learn. And much more... • 369: Tim Ballard | Putting a Stop to Child Sex Trafficking

    25/06/2020 Duration: 01h15min

Update: There is some controversy about the information presented in this episode. A counterpoint to some of the statistics and specifics on the problem of human/child trafficking is in this piece released on Dec 9, 2021 from The Atlantic.  Tim Ballard (@TimBallard) is a former Homeland Security agent who reluctantly got involved in chasing down global child trafficking. As the founder of Operation Underground Railroad, he is featured in the documentary film Operation Toussaint: Operation Underground Railroad and the Fight to End Modern Day Slavery, and is a co-author of the book adaptation as well as Slave Stealers: True Accounts of Slave Rescues -- Then and Now. What We Discuss with Tim Ballard: Slavery is the fastest-growing criminal enterprise in the world. There are more people enslaved right now than there were during the transatlantic slave trade period between the 15th and 19th centuries. Slavery generates three times the revenue of the NFL. With the money from all the trafficking in the world, yo

What we discuss with Coffeezilla: How fake gurus who profess to teach you how to get rich quick aren't using these same methods to get rich -- they're using you. The classic framework used by fake gurus to entice their target demographic. How fake gurus leverage cult of personality dynamics to be both relatable and unquestionable. How fake gurus pass off once-legitimate moneymaking methods long after they've become obsolete and worthless. Why you don't have to be especially gullible to fall for what a fake guru is selling, and you don't have to be a steel-willed ice king or queen to resist their sleazy machinations. And much more... • 366: Bill Nye | Radical Curiosity Saves the World

    18/06/2020 Duration: 46min

Bill Nye (@billnye) is a lifelong champion of science who is determined to teach you something today that you didn't know yesterday -- whether it's from a television screen, the pages of a book, or next to you at a dinner party. What We Discuss with Bill Nye: Why denying proven science -- like climate change and the efficacy of vaccination -- is in nobody's best interest. On reinvention and pivoting: How Bill Nye went from Boeing engineer to television personality. Why episodes of Bill Nye The Science Guy are still being used to teach kids science two decades after they first aired. How to look at the world with radical curiosity. • 365: Benjamin Hardy | How to Break Free from Self-Limiting Beliefs

    16/06/2020 Duration: 01h04min

Benjamin Hardy (@BenjaminPHardy) is an organizational psychologist and author of Willpower Doesn't Work: Discover the Hidden Keys to Success and Personality Isn't Permanent: Break Free from Self-Limiting Beliefs and Rewrite Your Story. What We Discuss with Benjamin Hardy: Why treating the results of a "scientific" personality test like Myers & Briggs or Enneagram as gospel is akin to trusting horoscopes to safely guide your life decisions -- inaccurate and potentially dangerous. Hear the story about how Benjamin and his wife almost didn't get married because a personality test indicated they weren't an ideal match. What looking back at the person you were 10 or 20 years ago should reveal about personality as an unfixed, malleable quality. Why categorizing yourself or accepting labels leads to a tunnel vision of mindlessness that tends to accentuate the negative qualities you believe yourself to have. You're always a work in progress -- you're never "finished." The person you'll be in 10 years may well b

What We Discuss with Garry Kasparov: The part chess played in promoting Soviet Russian ideology during the Cold War. What it takes to become a chess champion now compared to 50 years ago and why Garry considers the game “one of the most aggressive forces of psychological warfare.” What can and can’t be applied from chess to politics and decision making. What Garry knows from experience about authoritarian governments and why we need to be vigilant against them now more than ever. • 359: Justin Ramsdell | How to Detect and Disarm Pseudoscience

    02/06/2020 Duration: 01h23min

Justin Ramsdell is a clinical psychologist, an expert witness, an assistant professor of forensic psychology at George Mason University, and a veteran pseudoscience detector. What We Discuss with Justin Ramsdell: Why stressed brains don't make great decisions (especially when there's no light visible at the end of the tunnel to indicate that there is an end). How pseudoscience preys on our cognitive biases to give us the answers we want with the scantest of unprovable "evidence." Why watching YouTube videos and ranting in Reddit threads doesn't count as "research" in the same way that work done by field-experienced scientists with doctorate degrees and peer-reviewed studies under their belts counts as research. Be wary of intellectual trespassers -- who might very well be field-experienced scientists with doctorate degrees and peer-reviewed studies under their belts, but make wild, pseudoscientific claims about areas outside their expertise (e.g., a chiropractor who claims to cure COVID-19 with massage).
