  • The natural hair advocate untangling stigma and instilling self-love

    19/11/2020 Duration: 09min

Celine Bocks is not a hairstylist, but a healer. For decades of South Africa’s history, natural hair was stigmatised and treated as inferior. People of colour are still impacted by this today. “Growing up with kinky hair was a difficult journey because people are just looking down at you,” Bocks says. Now, she’s fighting back with the most powerful weapon – love. Bocks started the Citrusdal Natural Hair Beauties group with her sister to instil dignity and worth in her community. Through this initiative, Bocks offers workshops where girls are taught how to nurture their hair. “The best hair is healthy hair,” she says. Untangling harmful perceptions, Bocks is sending lies about cultural identity down the drain and helping youth embrace themselves.

  • The World of Birds on their brand new single!

    12/11/2020 Duration: 11min

The World of Birds came to life in 2019 when the McCarthy brothers, Conor (Producer) and Ben (Producer), linked up with Nic Preen (Songwriter) to form the band behind the launch of Preen’s solo career. However, the collaboration took them on a different path. Not long into their work together, the decision was made to merge as a band, launching The World of Birds. Almost immediately, they set out on a tour away from their home base in Cape Town, locally in South Africa and in Europe, opening for Beatenberg and A-Ha, as well as listing on the Triple J and Apple Music’s Today at Apple playlist. I got to chat to lead singer Nic Preen about the band, lockdown, and everything in between!
